Sharing a koi's ashes fairly between the people who loved it
A koi can be in a family for 30-40 years[1], so more than one person often wants a share. This planner shows how far one fish's ashes will go.
- Keepsakes, pendants and rings allocated
- Shows what's left for the main urn
- Realistic about small fish

Ashes sharing planner
Plan who keeps what. We work in cubic inches, the unit urns and keepsakes are sold in (about 1 cu in per lb of body weight).
Left for the main urn
2.9 cu in (48 mL)
Out of about 3 cu in in total.
| Person | Keepsake | Ashes |
|---|---|---|
| Me | Pendant | 0.05 cu in |
| Person 2 | Pendant | 0.05 cu in |
| Main urn | 2.9 cu in | |
A pendant holds about a pinch of ashes and a ring even less, so jewelry barely changes what's left. Scattering tubes vary a lot in size; check the one you choose.

Using the planner
How to plan a fair split of your fish's ashes
Start with the total. Enter your fish's body weight and the planner estimates the ashes, or type the amount directly if the provider has told you. Then add each person and what they'd like: a keepsake urn, a pendant, a ring or a small scattering tube.
The table updates as you go, showing how much each keepsake takes and how much remains for a main urn or for scattering. If you've asked for more than there is, the planner says "Not enough ashes", which is a far kinder moment on a screen than at the kitchen table.

The numbers
How the planner allocates ashes
By weight, cremated remains are about 3-5% of body weight[2]; for volume, the planner uses one cubic inch for roughly each pound of body weight. Each keepsake then takes a standard amount: a keepsake urn about 3 cubic inches, a pendant about 0.05 (a pinch), a ring about 0.02 and a small scattering tube about 10.
| Keepsake | Capacity | What that looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Keepsake urn | About 3 cu in | Roughly three tablespoons |
| Glass bead or paperweight swirl | About 0.1 cu in | Half a teaspoon or less |
| Pendant | About 0.05 cu in | A generous pinch |
| Ring | About 0.02 cu in | A few grains |
Because fish often come in below the general pet ratio (a forensic study of 100 cremations found the smallest bodies returned only about 1% of their weight), the planner's total may be slightly optimistic for a fish. If your provider has already returned the ashes, measure them with a tablespoon (a level one is about 0.9 cubic inches), choose "I know the volume" and type in the real figure.
A worked example
Worked example: one 12 lb koi, four people
A family's 12 lb koi returns roughly 12 cubic inches of ashes. Two adult children each want a keepsake urn (6 cubic inches together). A grandparent who fed the fish every morning wants a pendant (0.05). The parents want to scatter some by hand around a new water lily and keep the rest in a small urn. They leave the scattering out of the planner, because its small scattering tube assumes 10 cubic inches, far more than they need.
- Two keepsake urns: 6 cu in
- One pendant: 0.05 cu in
- Planner's "Left for the main urn": just under 6 cu in
- Scattered by hand by the pond: about 2 cu in, leaving about 4 cu in for the main urn
Four cubic inches is a small keepsake urn in its own right, so the parents might not need a larger one at all. That's typical of fish: a single koi can be shared generously, but there isn't enough to be wasteful.

For smaller fish
When there isn't enough to share
A pond goldfish of a pound or two might fill one keepsake urn or a handful of pendants. A fancy goldfish might fill one pendant. A betta or tetra won't leave enough to divide at all, and the planner will show "Not enough ashes" for even one keepsake urn.
If several children want something from a small fish, there are other ways to share: a print of the same photo for each child, a stone each painted for the grave, or cuttings from a plant grown on the burial spot. Our short rituals after aquarium loss and memorial ideas for fish have more, and the poll results page shows which memorials other fish keepers chose.

Doing it
Practical tips for dividing ashes at home
- Work over a tray lined with paper, somewhere without a draft.
- Use a small funnel and a clean teaspoon; jewelry makers often supply a tiny funnel.
- Fill pendants and rings last, once the larger shares are done.
- Ask the provider whether they'll divide ashes for you. Some will, for a small fee.
One industry report puts personalized urns at about USD 50–1,000+[5], so matching keepsakes for several people can add up. Small doesn't always mean cheap, either: by our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more than a full-size wooden urn from the same seller[6]. The memorial budget planner totals them, and the urn size calculator sizes whatever's left.

Questions people ask
Can I split my fish's ashes between family members?
Yes, if the fish was large enough and cremated privately. A koi usually leaves enough for several keepsake urns or many pendants. Smaller fish may only fill one pendant or none. The planner shows how many shares your fish's ashes can make.
Is it disrespectful to divide ashes?
Not at all. Dividing ashes is common and lets each person keep a connection to a pet they loved. Many families find it comforting that a koi fed by three generations can be remembered in three homes. What matters is that everyone agrees on the plan.
How much ash fits in a cremation pendant?
About 0.05 cubic inches, which is a generous pinch. Even a modest share of a koi's ashes can fill dozens of pendants. Rings hold less, about 0.02 cubic inches. Glass beads and paperweights usually use around 0.1 cubic inches.
Can I scatter some of my koi's ashes in the pond?
It's better to scatter around the pond than into it. Cremated remains are very alkaline and can change the water chemistry of a small pond, which may stress the fish still living there. A garden bed, a lily pot's soil or the pond's edge planting are safer choices.
