Using the planner

How to build a memorial budget for a fish

The planner starts with a checklist of ten common items, each with an editable low and high amount; private cremation and an urn start ticked. Untick anything you don't need, change any figure you already know, and watch the running total. When you're done, copy or print a summary to share with whoever is splitting the cost.

Some items suit dogs and cats more than fish. Leave euthanasia and the paw print unticked (they start off) unless an aquatic vet was involved. There are no custom lines, so use the ones that fit: a pond-side stone in Memorial stone or plaque, a water lily in Memorial tree or bio urn, and a framed photo in Farewell or service.

Where the defaults come from

How the planner sets its starting figures

Cremation defaults come from published US price guides. For the smallest pets, which is where fish sit, CareCredit lists communal $45-75; private $100-175[2]. Collection and urn upgrades use typical add-on ranges of $50 to $150 and $50 to $300, labeled as typical because they vary a great deal.

Memorial items draw on published ranges where they exist. One industry report puts personalized urns at about USD 50–1,000+[3]. For items with no reliable published price, such as an engraved river stone, the planner uses a wide range and invites you to replace it with a real quote. For bought markers, our estimate puts engraved garden stones from about $39 at the median of three US sellers[4], and photo-etched granite from about $158 to $160[5].

Two worked examples

Worked examples: a koi memorial and a betta goodbye

Example budget for a much-loved koi (US)
ItemLowHigh
Private cremation$100$175
Pickup or transport$50$150
Urn (small ceramic)$50$150
Memorial stone or plaque (pond-side)$40$200
Memorial tree or bio urn (water lily)$20$60
Total$260$735

Now a child's betta. A planter, soil and a new plant cost perhaps $15 to $40, typed into the memorial tree line with cremation and the urn unticked. Add a printed photo in a frame for $10 to $30 in the farewell line, and the whole goodbye comes to $25 to $70. Nothing about that is a lesser goodbye; it's simply the right size for the fish. A child who helps choose the plant and waters it each week gets something no urn could give them.

Keeping costs down

Where fish owners can save, and where it's worth spending

  • Deliver the fish yourself. A frozen koi travels well in a cooler, which removes the collection fee.
  • Wait for the ashes before buying an urn. You may need a much smaller one than you'd guess.
  • Choose communal for small fish if you don't need ashes back, and spend the difference on a memorial.
  • Make the marker yourself. A smooth stone and outdoor paint can mean more than a bought plaque.

Where it's worth spending: on private cremation if you want ashes to keep or share, and on anything you'll see every day. Cost worries are common, and in one US study, 61%[6] of owners rated the cost of aftercare as a concern. Knowing your total up front takes some of that worry away.

Deciding what to spend

Setting a budget you won't regret later

There's no correct amount to spend on a fish. A prized show koi may have cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to buy, and its owner may want a memorial to match. A child's goldfish from a fair may deserve exactly the same care at a fraction of the cost. Let the fish's place in your life guide you, not its price tag.

It helps to set a ceiling before you start phoning providers, when you're calmer. Pet aftercare is often bought quickly and without comparing: in the UK regulator's survey of pet owners, only 52%[7] of cremation buyers remembered being given price information. Walking into those calls with a number in mind makes it easier to say no to extras you don't want. The regulator's final report went further, concluding owners may pay around £100 more[8] for individual cremations than they would with stronger competition.

Keep in mind

What the budget planner can't tell you

The planner can't see local prices, weekend surcharges or a maker's shipping fee. It doesn't know whether a provider near you accepts fish, or whether water cremation is available. The figures are a framework, not a quote.

Insurance rarely helps with fish, so plan to pay the full amount yourself. Our services page explains what each line on the bill actually buys. For cremation prices in your area, use the cremation cost calculator. To check what your fish will actually leave, try the ashes weight estimator. For memorial ideas at every budget, see memorial ideas for fish and the guide to pond-side markers.

If you're planning ahead for an elderly koi, the pre-planning guide explains which costs are worth setting aside now. When you're ready, send us your budget and your fish's details and we'll email options that fit.

Questions people ask

How much does a koi memorial cost in total?

It depends on what you include. A private cremation with a simple container might total $100 to $175 in the US. Adding collection, a small urn, a pond-side stone and a water lily can bring it to roughly $260 to $735. A garden burial with a homemade marker can cost almost nothing.

What's a meaningful memorial for a fish on a small budget?

A planter burial with a new plant, a painted stone, or a framed photo all cost very little and give you something to look at every day. For pond fish, a single water lily planted in their name is lovely and inexpensive. The size of the spend doesn't measure the love.

Can I print or share my budget?

Yes. The planner creates a summary you can copy or print, which helps when several family members are sharing the cost of a koi's memorial. Nothing is saved on our side; the figures stay in your browser.

Should I include euthanasia in a fish memorial budget?

Only if an aquatic vet was involved. Most fish die at home without a vet, so leave the euthanasia lines unticked, as they are when the planner opens. If a vet did help, tick one, ask for their fee and type it in, since fish euthanasia prices aren't widely published.
