How to price a fish cremation with the calculator
- Check the animal and enter a weight. Fish (e.g. koi) is preselected at 3 lb. Even a jumbo koi stays in the lowest band, so a rough weight is fine.
- Pick the type. Communal (no ashes back), partitioned, private (only your fish's ashes) or witnessed (you're present).
- Choose your country. US, UK, Canada, Australia or somewhere else. The first four use local prices in local currency; somewhere else shows US prices in dollars as a guide.
- Tick any extras. Home or vet pickup, after-hours or weekend service, an upgraded urn. In the US each adds a typical range to the total; elsewhere most show as a local quote instead.
The result updates as you go and shows a line-by-line breakdown, so you can see exactly where the money goes. It also puts private and communal side by side, which is often the moment families decide.
Where the figures come from
How the calculator builds its price ranges
For the US, the base price comes from CareCredit's pet cremation cost guide, using the lightest weight band because that's where fish belong. We cross-check it with PetMD, which puts communal cremation at communal $50+; private $100+[2], and with Embrace's broader ranges.
For the UK, the calculator draws on the Competition and Markets Authority's review of vet services, which found prices from about GBP 50 to GBP 300+[3]. Any pet under 5 kg, a koi included, gets the cat price there: £160 to about £190 for individual cremation. For Australia, it uses a survey of listed prices, where individual cremation for pets up to 5 kg came in at AUD 412 median[4].
Extras use typical add-on ranges: home collection $50 to $150, after-hours $75 to $200 and an upgraded urn $50 to $300. They're labeled as typical ranges because they vary so much. The paw print keepsake box appears for every animal, but it has no fish equivalent, so leave it unticked.
A worked example
Worked example: pricing a pond koi in the US
Imagine a 9 lb koi, with a family that wants the ashes back and would like the fish collected from home. Here's how the calculator would build the estimate.
| Line item | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Private cremation, up to 30 lb | $100 | $175 |
| Home or vet pickup (typical add-on) | $50 | $150 |
| Upgraded urn (optional) | $50 | $300 |
| Estimated total | $200 | $630 |
The tool rounds the top of the total up to the nearest $10, so it reads $200 to $630. Drop the collection by driving the koi to the provider yourself, frozen in a cooler, and the low end falls to $150. Choose communal instead and the base drops sharply, but no ashes come back. The comparison makes the trade-off visible.

The biggest lever
Private, partitioned or communal: how the type changes a fish's bill
The cremation type moves the total more than anything else. Communal is the lowest-cost option and returns nothing. Partitioned sits in the middle: pets share the chamber but are kept apart, though with a small fish the separation is hard to rely on, because there's so little to keep apart. Private costs the most and is the only way to be sure every grain returned belongs to your koi. Our estimate across eight countries' price lists is that private typically costs about twice the communal price for the same weight[5].

For tank fish
Is it worth paying to cremate a small fish?
For a betta or a neon tetra, the calculator will still show the provider's minimum, because a cremation cycle costs much the same regardless of size. Our calculation from US price bands shows how steeply that fixed cost falls with weight: about $9.2 per pound for a 15 lb pet, but about $4 per pound at 100 lb[6]. What you get back, though, may be a trace. Before you pay the private rate, run the weight through the ashes weight estimator.
Some families decide the goodbye is worth it regardless, and that's a valid choice. Others choose a planter burial or a communal cremation and spend the difference on a framed photo or a new plant. The aftercare options comparison helps you see the alternatives.

Before you rely on it
What the cost calculator can't tell you
The ranges are national. Your local price may sit above the top in a costly city or below the bottom in a rural area. The calculator can't know which providers near you accept fish, whether they charge weekend rates, or whether their "private" is truly individual.
Standard pet insurance rarely helps here. Embrace's summary of typical US policies is blunt: Euthanasia covered if medically necessary; cremation not covered by standard policy[7]. Most pet insurance is written for dogs and cats in the first place, so plan on paying the full amount yourself. It's also worth comparing: the UK regulator's final report concluded owners may pay around £100 more[8] for individual cremations than they would under strong price competition.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to cremate a goldfish?
In the US, usually the provider's smallest-pet price. CareCredit lists private cremation for pets up to 30 lb at about $100 to $175, with communal cremation lower. Because a goldfish is so light, ask what the provider expects to return before paying for private cremation.
Why does a tiny fish cost as much as a small dog?
Much of the cost is fixed: running the chamber, handling, record-keeping and returning the ashes. Those don't shrink with the animal, so providers set a minimum price. A few may offer a lower rate for very small pets, so it's worth asking.
What does fish cremation cost in the UK?
UK pet cremation prices run from roughly £50 for a communal cremation of a small pet to over £300 for a large pet's individual cremation, according to the Competition and Markets Authority. The calculator prices a fish like a cat there, at about £160 to £190 for individual cremation, because providers usually charge their small-pet minimum.
Is water cremation cheaper for fish?
Not always. Embrace lists US aquamation at about $80 to $450, which overlaps flame cremation prices. For a small fish, both will usually be the provider's minimum. Choose based on availability and what feels right, then compare written quotes.
Does pet insurance cover fish cremation?
Rarely. Standard pet insurance usually excludes cremation even for dogs and cats, and most policies are written for those species rather than fish. Some end-of-life add-ons for dogs and cats pay toward cremation, but check the policy wording before counting on it.
