Fish & Koi Cremation in Denmark: what to know
Fish aftercare in Denmark follows the same basic choices as anywhere: private cremation with ashes returned, communal cremation without, or a respectful burial. What changes from country to country is who offers the service, what it costs and which rules apply to burial and to releasing fish. This page covers Denmark as a whole; each city page adds local detail.
Whatever the local traditions in Denmark, a fish that mattered to you deserves a proper goodbye. That might be a private cremation and a small urn, a communal cremation arranged through a vet, a burial under a new plant or a keepsake that needs no ash at all. This page explains the costs and rules, and links to every city we cover.
We cover 3 communities in Denmark, from Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense.

Cremation, custom and the family fish in Denmark
Some pet crematories in Denmark, where the human cremation rate is near 86.48%[1], let families attend. For a fish, an attended cremation can be brief and quiet: a few minutes to say goodbye before the chamber door closes, and sometimes the chance to wait for the ashes. Not every provider offers it for small pets, and it usually costs more, so ask whether it's possible, how long it takes and whether children are welcome.
The cremation figure for Denmark comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Why a small fish still has a minimum price
Speed can cost extra. One Norwegian crematorium charges NOK 1,790 for same-day return of ashes[2], and in Sweden a return of two to four weeks is normal[3]. A fish doesn't need an express service: frozen, it can wait, and so can its ashes. When you ask a provider near Denmark for a quote, ask for the standard timescale and leave off any rush fee.
For a koi or large pond fish near Denmark, individual cremation at the small-pet rate makes sense. For small aquarium fish, many European families choose a garden burial instead, which is allowed in many countries on your own land if you follow local rules on keeping clear of water. Ask local providers for both individual and collective prices.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland (under 2 kg) | n/a | from €150 |
| Germany (all sizes) | €85 to €205 | €165 to €375 |
| Netherlands (range across providers) | €49 to €330 | €70 to €700 |
| Norway (1–20 kg) | from NOK 1,190 | NOK 3,790 |

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Denmark
If you rent, your lease matters more than any law. Most tenancy agreements don't mention pet burials, but a landlord or homeowners' association can still object to a grave in a shared garden. A planter on your own balcony or patio avoids the question, as does cremation. Pond fish in a rented garden raise one more point: ask before draining or filling in a pond when you move out. The notes below cover what Denmark allows.
A checklist for Denmark fish keepers
- If a big koi is going for private cremation, take its length and get a rough weight by standing on bathroom scales holding the bagged fish.
- Photograph its markings before freezing. Some families like a picture to compare with the paperwork, and it's a lovely keepsake anyway.
- Wrap it in an old towel inside two strong bags and freeze it lying flat so it fits a cooler later.
- Call a provider that has cremated fish before and find out roughly how much ash to expect and how each pet stays identified.
- Work out the urn size with the urn size calculator before you buy anything.
- Drive it over in an insulated box with frozen gel packs, and think ahead about a home for the ashes, whether that's indoors on a shelf, out in the garden or beside the pond.
Ways to mark the spot
Biodegradable memorials suit a water animal. A plantable urn or a simple paper-wrapped burial under a water iris returns everything to the garden within a season or two. Our guides on biodegradable memorials and pond-side markers cover the options. In Denmark, a native marginal plant at the pond's edge also feeds wildlife, which is a quiet way to let one life support others.

Questions people ask
Why do pond fish die in hot weather in Denmark?
Warm water holds less oxygen, and on hot, still nights levels drop lowest around dawn. In hot parts of Denmark, such as Denmark where summer highs average about °F, an air pump or fountain helps, and a dead fish should be removed and frozen promptly.
Can I keep a koi's ashes outdoors by the pond in Denmark?
Yes, if the container can cope with the weather. Choose a sealed, frost-proof urn in stone, metal or glazed ceramic, or place a small inner urn inside a hollow garden ornament. Ordinary wood and unglazed pottery crack in freezing weather and fade in strong sun. Set it on a firm base away from the splash zone, and consider burying most of the ashes and keeping only a little on display.
Is pet cremation common in Denmark?
For people, about 86.48%[1] of deaths in Denmark end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. For fish, the choice depends more on size than on custom: larger fish are often cremated, while small tank fish are commonly buried.
What's the cheapest respectful goodbye for a fish in Denmark?
A garden or planter burial costs almost nothing and gives you a place to visit. If you'd rather not bury, ask your vet whether they include small pets in a communal cremation, usually the lowest-cost cremation available. A photo or plant memorial needs no ash at all.
How many communities do you cover in Denmark?
We currently have local fish aftercare guides for 3 communities in Denmark, including Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules for burial and scattering, and how to find a provider that accepts fish.
Do winters in Denmark affect fish burial?
In the colder parts of Denmark, frozen ground can make digging impossible for months. Keep your fish sealed in the freezer until spring, or arrange cremation in the meantime. In Denmark, one of the coldest places we cover, average winter lows reach about °F.
