Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Copenhagen picture
Most Copenhageners live in apartments, often several floors up without a lift, and many households don't own a car. That makes moving a pet who has died harder than it sounds, whether it is a large animal or a carrier that has to go down four flights of stairs. Before you try to manage it by cargo bike or taxi, ask whether the provider or your vet can collect from home, and mention the stairs so they come prepared.
Copenhagen's weather is mild but grey and wet much of the year, and winter days are short. That gives you a little breathing room, since a pet kept in a cool room will stay stable for a day while you decide. In the warmer weeks of July and August, move faster and keep the body out of sunny rooms and away from radiators.
Prices in Copenhagen vary more between providers than most people expect, and a fish almost always lands in the lowest weight band. That band has a minimum charge, because running the equipment costs much the same for a four-ounce goldfish as for a ten-pound koi. Ask for a written total that includes collection, the container and any certificate, and compare two quotes before you agree.
Copenhagen's population is around 794,000.
If you want to compare providers, look at Odense (87 miles) and Aarhus (98 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Cremation in Denmark: a little context
With cremation chosen for roughly 86.48%[1] of deaths in Denmark, many families have already arranged one for a relative and know the questions to ask. They apply to a fish on a smaller scale. How is my fish tracked at every stage? Is it cremated alone, or alongside other pets with a divider between them? When do the ashes come back, and in what? A provider that answers all three without fuss is usually a safe choice.
We take the Denmark rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Copenhagen, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
When the weather sets the pace in Copenhagen
Outdoor goodbyes for a fish depend on the weather, but they don't have to happen straight away. Many families in Copenhagen keep a fish frozen, or keep a larger fish's ashes indoors, until a calm, dry day for a small ceremony by the pond or in the garden. Choose a day that suits the people who loved the fish.

Fish cremation prices for Copenhagen families
Prices spread widely even inside one European country. Across 31 Dutch pet crematoria, individual cremation ranged from EUR 70 to 700[5], a tenfold gap for what is often the same service. A fish sits in the smallest weight band everywhere, so near Copenhagen it pays to ask two providers for their lowest-band individual and collective prices, and to confirm what comes back before you choose.

Burial, scattering and release rules in Capital Region
Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for Capital Region, set out below, are all you need.
Step by step, from tank to goodbye
- If your child's fish dies while they're at school, either leave the fish in place or put it somewhere cold, then be honest with them once they're home.
- Skip the secret replacement. Children usually notice, and the truth is easier to handle than a discovery later.
- Let them see the fish if they want to, resting in a soft cloth, and give plain, simple answers to whatever they ask.
- Offer two or three choices for the goodbye, such as a flowerpot on the windowsill, a spot in the garden or a small box to keep.
- Set a time for the goodbye, giving them a chance to write a card, find a stone or think of words.
- Leave the tank empty for a while before talking about a new fish, unless your child asks sooner.
Small memorials for a small life in Copenhagen
Pets in Copenhagen live very urban lives, in courtyard flats in Nørrebro and Vesterbro, on balconies above the harbor and in small gardens in the outer districts. Because so many households have no garden of their own, burial at home is rarely an option, and many owners choose individual cremation so there is something tangible to keep. Ask clearly whether your pet will be cremated alone, and how long it takes before the ashes come back.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Denmark?
For people, yes: about 86.48%[1] of Denmark deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Copenhagen follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Copenhagen?
The closest communities we cover are Odense (about 87 miles) and Aarhus (about 98 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Copenhagen too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is it okay to flush a dead fish?
It's better not to. Fish can carry parasites and bacteria that shouldn't reach rivers, and wastewater isn't always fully treated, especially during storms. Never flush a fish that might still be alive. Burying it in the garden or a planter, or freezing it until you arrange cremation, is kinder and safer, and children often find a small burial less upsetting than a flush.
Can I bury a pet fish in my garden in Denmark?
In many European countries you can bury a small pet on your own land, with conditions. Some countries rule out pet burials in water-protection areas, so ask your local authority if you live near a spring, well or reservoir. Keep well away from wells and streams, wrap the fish in paper or cotton and check local rules if you rent.
How do I explain a fish's death to my child?
Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.
Is there a fish vet in Copenhagen?
Large cities are the most likely places to have aquatic or exotic-animal vets. If you're losing several fish, one can examine a freshly chilled body to look for parasites or infection. Your regular vet, a koi club or a local fish store can usually point you to someone who sees fish.
