Johns Creek, Georgia
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Johns Creek picture
Because so many Johns Creek homes sit in planned subdivisions with association covenants, a backyard grave is often off the table, and families lean toward cremation. The practical questions are simple. Will the ashes be returned, and from an individual or shared cremation? Is a paw impression included or extra? How is your pet carried from the house? Asking all three on the first call saves repeat conversations at a hard time.
North Fulton summers are warm and sticky, and a long run of ninety-degree afternoons is common in July. A pet who dies at home in that season should be moved to a cool floor, perhaps in a basement if you have one, and kept on a towel over something frozen. Collection within a day is the goal. Winter frosts are frequent but brief, and they give you some extra hours.
In a town the size of Johns Creek, many families simply bury a small fish in the garden, and there's nothing wrong with that. Cremation tends to come up for larger or older fish: a koi that has been in the family for years, a big goldfish that outgrew three tanks, or a fish that belonged to someone who has since passed on. For those, the drive to a crematory near Atlanta can be worth it.
Johns Creek is home to about 80,401 people, the 11th-largest of the 68 Georgia communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Atlanta, about 22 miles (36 km) away, which is where some providers serving Johns Creek are based.
Families in Johns Creek often end up using a provider from Duluth (3 miles), Peachtree Corners (5 miles) and Norcross (6 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish
About 54.2%[1] of people in Georgia are cremated, a figure that has been climbing for years. Pet aftercare has followed a similar path, and fish are part of that shift. Where families once flushed or buried every fish without a second thought, more now ask whether a long-lived koi or goldfish can be cremated and its ashes kept. The answer is usually yes, as long as the fish is big enough to leave something.
That Georgia rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Johns Creek only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Season by season: fish losses in Johns Creek
Wherever you are, the first rule for a fish is the same: take it out of the water as soon as you're sure it has died, then seal it and freeze it. In warm weather, do it within the hour, because decay fouls the water quickly. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial until spring.

Fish cremation quotes in Johns Creek: what's normal
By our estimate, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal[5] across the markets we track, and for a fish that gap deserves a moment's thought. The extra pays for your own fish's ashes to come back to you. With a koi, that buys a few ounces for a small urn. With a neon tetra, it may buy very little. Ask any Johns Creek provider what they would return, then decide whether the difference is worth it. The cost calculator lays out both routes side by side.
The Georgia price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Burial, scattering and release rules in Georgia
Ashes from a fish are mostly bone mineral, and scattering them is rarely regulated on your own land. Tipping them into a pond that still holds fish can cloud the water, so many keepers scatter around the edge instead. Public lakes, rivers and parks are a different matter: the body that manages them can set its own rules. Here's what applies in Georgia.
The official Georgia local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Johns Creek.
The Georgia page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Johns Creek's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do when your fish dies in Johns Creek
- If a big koi is going for private cremation, take its length and get a rough weight by standing on bathroom scales holding the bagged fish.
- Photograph its markings before it goes in the freezer. A photo can be checked against the paperwork later, and many families treasure it regardless.
- Wrap it in an old towel inside two strong bags and freeze it lying flat so it fits a cooler later.
- Call a provider that has cremated fish before and ask how much ash it expects and how it tracks each pet.
- Work out the urn size with the urn size calculator before you buy anything.
- Drive it over in an insulated box with frozen gel packs, and think ahead about a home for the ashes, whether that's indoors on a shelf, out in the garden or beside the pond.
Ways to mark the spot
Johns Creek occupies the northeast corner of Fulton County, bounded on its east and north by the Chattahoochee River, with Gwinnett and Forsyth counties just across the water. It became a city in 2006 and is almost entirely residential: large subdivisions with swim-and-tennis clubhouses, cul-de-sacs and generous lots. Downtown Atlanta is about 22 miles off, so most families look for help in north Fulton or Gwinnett. Mention your neighborhood's gate or entry arrangement when you book.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Atlanta to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Atlanta (roughly 22 miles from Johns Creek) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Johns Creek?
Usually yes. Duluth is about 3 miles away, Peachtree Corners is about 5 miles away and Norcross is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Johns Creek page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 54.2%[1] of Georgia residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What can I keep if my fish was too small to leave ashes?
Plenty. A framed photo, a painting or print of the fish, its favorite tank ornament, a plant grown over a garden burial or a painted stone all work. Some crematories offer a token vial with a certificate, though the contents may be mostly from the chamber. Ask what's inside before you pay, and choose whatever feels like your fish.
How long will it take to get my fish's ashes back in Johns Creek?
Many families receive private cremation ashes in about one to two weeks. In a smaller town, where the cremation happens in a larger city such as Atlanta, it may take a little longer, especially if your vet has a weekly collection. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
How long can I keep a dead fish in the freezer?
Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.
