How Georgia thinks about cremation
In Georgia, about 54.2%[1] of people are cremated. That middle ground means most people are comfortable with cremation without it being automatic. For a fish, that's a helpful place to be: nobody expects a particular choice, and providers are used to hearing different requests. Decide by size. Larger koi and goldfish suit cremation; the smallest fish often suit a burial, a planter or a communal cremation.

The legal side of losing a fish in Georgia
Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. The first day after a fish dies
- Check whether it's really gone. A jumper found on the floor may pull through if there's any gill movement, so get it straight back into the aquarium.

In the warm months, lay your pet somewhere air-conditioned, tuck a cloth-covered freezer pack under the body, and aim to have them collected within a day. Game-day weekends in autumn clog the roads near campus and Sanford Stadium, so allow extra time for any pickup on a Saturday.

Why does the Athens page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 54.2%[1] of Georgia residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Athens climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Athens?

My fish died in the heat. How fast do I need to act?
Within the hour if you can. Remove it from the water, because decay in warm water releases ammonia that harms the other fish. Seal it in a bag and freeze it straight away. Never leave it in a hot car or garage. Once it's frozen, you can take your time over the aftercare decision.
