Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Dubai picture
Dubai's summer heat is extreme, often well above 40°C from June to September, so a pet's body must be cooled almost immediately. Wrap your pet in a towel, place ice packs around the body and keep them in an air-conditioned room until collection. Even in the milder winter months, arranging aftercare the same day or the next is the safe approach.
Dubai pets live in apartment towers in areas like the Marina and Downtown, and in villa communities with small gardens further out. Burying a pet in a community garden, the desert or on public land isn't a straightforward option, so most owners arrange cremation through a vet or a pet aftercare provider. Share your community and building details when you ask, and mention if you'll need collection.
Emergency vet hospitals in Dubai are open around the clock, but most are not set up to treat fish, and a fish that has already died doesn't need an emergency visit. Net it out, wrap it and put it in the freezer. Everything else can wait until a normal working day, when you can call a crematory or your vet calmly and ask what they can do for a fish of that size.
Dubai is home to about 3,331,000 people, the largest of the 2 United Arab Emirates communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Emirates Hills (13 miles), Sharjah (13 miles) and Abu Dhabi (76 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish
Whatever the local customs around human funerals, fish aftercare comes down to a few honest choices: private cremation for a larger fish, communal cremation when you don't need ashes returned, or a burial. Many families in Dubai combine a simple goodbye with a keepsake that needs no ash at all, such as a framed photo, a painted stone or the tank's favorite ornament.
Timing a fish's aftercare in Dubai's climate
If you keep pond fish, the seasons in Dubai will shape both their risks and your goodbye. Hot spells can cause oxygen crashes; cold snaps can freeze the surface; storms can knock out a pump. Whatever caused a loss, check the water and the equipment first, then turn to aftercare once the remaining fish are safe.

Fish cremation quotes in Dubai: what's normal
In Dubai, as in many places, fish aftercare may be less organized than for dogs and cats. Freezing your fish gives you time to find out what's available. If a private cremation isn't offered locally, a respectful burial where it's permitted, or a keepsake that doesn't depend on ash, is a perfectly good goodbye.

Local rules in United Arab Emirates
A fish is small, but the rules around water are not. Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, and don't flush a fish, dead or alive. Invasive fish released by owners are a real problem in many regions. For burial and scattering, the rules for United Arab Emirates are summarised below, and your city or council may add its own.
In the UAE, Dubai Municipality says animals may not be buried, and municipal disposal is mass cremation with no ashes returned. For a fish, that leaves private cremation through a pet crematorium, communal cremation or a memorial that needs no ash. Keep your fish frozen while you ask your vet what's available.
The first day after a fish dies
- If your child's fish dies while they're at school, either leave the fish in place or put it somewhere cold, then be honest with them once they're home.
- Skip the secret replacement. Children usually notice, and the truth is easier to handle than a discovery later.
- Let them see the fish if they want to, resting in a soft cloth, and give plain, simple answers to whatever they ask.
- Offer two or three choices for the goodbye, such as a flowerpot on the windowsill, a spot in the garden or a small box to keep.
- Set a time for the goodbye, so they can make a card, pick a stone or choose words to say.
- Leave the tank empty for a while before talking about a new fish, unless your child asks sooner.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Many Dubai residents are expats whose pets have traveled with them from other countries, and a large share of families will eventually move on again. That makes cremation with ashes returned the most common choice, because ashes can travel with you when you relocate. If you plan to take them abroad, ask the provider for a cremation certificate and a sealed, travel-friendly container.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dubai?
Usually yes. Emirates Hills is about 13 miles away, Sharjah is about 13 miles away and Abu Dhabi is about 76 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What if burial isn't allowed where I live?
In some countries, burying animals isn't permitted at all. Then the choice is between municipal collection and cremation, either communal or individual with the ashes handed back. For a small fish, a memorial that doesn't depend on the body works well: a framed photo, a plant bought in its name or the little castle it used to hide in. Ask your vet what's available locally and keep the fish frozen while you decide.
Is a fish really a pet worth cremating?
If it mattered to you, yes. Koi can live 30 to 40 years and many families have kept the same fish for decades. A goldfish can live 6 to 7 years. The time you spent feeding, watching and caring for a fish is real, and so is the grief. Choose the goodbye that fits the fish and your family.
What should I do with the other fish after one dies?
Remove the dead fish quickly, then test the water for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature. Check the filter, pump and heater. If readings are off, do a partial water change and hold off feeding for a day. Watch the others closely for a week. If more fish look unwell, a vet who sees fish can examine a freshly chilled body.
What if no one near Dubai will cremate a fish?
Freeze your fish while you ask your vet and nearby pet crematories. If none accept fish, a respectful burial where it's permitted, or a memorial that needs no ash such as a photo or plant, is a perfectly good goodbye. Avoid flushing or releasing anything into local waters.
Can a vet put my sick fish to sleep in Dubai?
Yes. A vet with fish experience can end its suffering by adding an anesthetic overdose to its water, and the fish simply falls asleep. Vets advise against home methods such as freezing a live fish or flushing it. Transport it in its own water with a lid on, and raise aftercare during the same appointment, so the vet can arrange cremation or hand the body back to you for burial.
