Fish & Koi Cremation in Dubai: what to know
Prices for fish cremation in Dubai follow the smallest weight band on a provider's list, so even a tiny fish usually costs the provider's minimum for a private cremation. That's why honest providers will tell you what to expect back before you pay. For a small fish, communal cremation or a garden burial is often the more sensible choice.
If you keep fish in Dubai, two things shape the goodbye: size and season. A large koi or goldfish leaves enough ash for a small urn; a tank fish may leave almost nothing, so a burial or a symbolic memorial often suits better. Season decides how quickly you need to act in the heat and whether frozen ground delays a garden burial.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish
Attitudes to cremation vary from place to place, but for fish the practical questions are the same everywhere. Is the fish big enough to leave ash you could keep? Does a local provider accept aquatic pets? And would a burial, a planter or a memorial that needs no ash suit it better? In Dubai, as anywhere, your fish's size answers most of those questions for you.
Fish cremation quotes in Dubai: what's normal
In Dubai, as in many places, fish aftercare may be less organized than for dogs and cats. Freezing your fish gives you time to find out what's available. If a private cremation isn't offered locally, a respectful burial where it's permitted, or a keepsake that doesn't depend on ash, is a perfectly good goodbye.
Because services and rules differ from country to country, the first call in Dubai is usually to your vet, who will know whether any local crematory accepts fish. The table shows published small-pet prices from other places as a rough guide. For a small tank fish, a burial or a memorial that needs no ash may suit better.
| Place | Shared (communal) | Separate (private) |
|---|---|---|
| UAE (pet under 5 kg) | AED 700 to 900 | ask |
| United States (up to 30 lb) | $45 to $75 | $100 to $175 |

Burial, scattering and release rules in Dubai
Rules about pets after death are set locally, and fish are usually covered by the same rules as other small pets. Garden burial is often allowed on land you own, with limits near wells and water. Scattering ashes directly into lakes and rivers may need permission. Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places, and some ban releasing goldfish outright.
In the UAE, Dubai Municipality says animals may not be buried, and municipal disposal is mass cremation with no ashes returned. For a fish, that leaves private cremation through a pet crematorium, communal cremation or a memorial that needs no ash. Keep your fish frozen while you ask your vet what's available.
The first day after a fish dies
- Take a breath. With your fish out of the water, there's no decision that can't wait an hour.
- Wrap your fish in a damp paper towel or cloth, seal it and label it so no one in Dubai gets a shock at the freezer.
- Check on the survivors: aeration, filter, heater and a water test. If more than one fish looks unwell, call a vet who sees fish.
- Ask your vet or a local fish store to name crematories around Dubai that take fish.
- Choose private, communal or a burial, then get the full price in writing before saying yes.
- Drop your fish off in a cooler with ice packs, or arrange a pickup when a large koi is too heavy to lift and carry on your own.
- Plan a small goodbye, above all when children knew the fish: a picture they draw, a painted stone or something planted there.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Ashes from a larger fish can go into a small pendant, a glass paperweight or a keepsake vial for each family member. Before ordering several, check how much ash you actually have; a koi may return a few ounces, a goldfish a teaspoon. A plant, a stone or a framed photo can fill in where ash runs short.

Questions people ask
Is it legal to flush or release a fish in Dubai?
Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places because non-native fish can spread disease and harm native species. Flushing a dead fish isn't a good idea either, as not all wastewater is fully treated. Freeze the fish and choose a burial or cremation instead.
Is pet cremation common in Dubai?
For people, about a majority of deaths in Dubai end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. For fish, the choice depends more on size than on custom: larger fish are often cremated, while small tank fish are commonly buried.
How long does it take to get a fish's ashes back in Dubai?
Many families receive private cremation ashes within one to two weeks. In rural areas, where small pets travel to a regional crematory on a set schedule, it can take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
Can I scatter my koi's ashes in a lake or river in Dubai?
It depends on who manages the water, and some public waters require permission. Scattering around your own pond, in the garden rather than into the water, avoids the question and keeps the memorial close. If you use a public place, choose a quiet spot and check the rules first.
Do pet crematories in Dubai accept fish?
Many do, particularly for larger fish such as koi and pond goldfish. Some decline very small fish because there's nothing meaningful to return, or offer communal cremation or a symbolic return instead. Call ahead with your fish's length and weight and ask what they'd expect to give back.

- [1] Private cremation cost per pound falls with size in the US: roughly $9.2/lb for a 15 lb pet, $4.2/lb at 60 lb and about $4.0/lb at 100 lb. Our estimate: band midpoint price / representative weight: 0-30 lb (midpoint $137.50 / 15 lb) = $9.17/lb; 51-70 lb ($250 / 60 lb) = $4.17/lb; over 90 lb ($400 / ~100 lb) = $4.00/lb. How we calculate.
