Fish & Koi Cremation in Spain: what to know

In Spain, most families who want a fish cremated go through their vet, who works with one or more pet crematoria that handle small animals. You can usually contact a crematorium directly too. For a fish, ask whether they accept aquatic pets and what they would expect to return for your fish's size.

Fish aftercare in Spain follows the same basic choices as anywhere: private cremation with ashes returned, communal cremation without, or a respectful burial. What changes from country to country is who offers the service, what it costs and which rules apply to burial and to releasing fish. This page covers Spain as a whole; each city page adds local detail.

We cover 17 communities in Spain, from Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia to smaller towns.

A fish and its family in Spain

Cremation habits in Spain, and what they mean for a fish

Cremation now covers some 50.11%[1] of deaths in Spain, and that steady rise has gone hand in hand with pets being treated as family. Fish are part of the shift. Koi typically live 30-40 years[2], according to the Japan Nishikigoi Promotion Association, so a pond fish can outlast a mortgage and watch children grow up. Choosing a proper cremation for a fish like that is no stranger than doing it for a dog.

Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) publishes the Spain rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Fish cremation quotes in Spain: what's normal

Across Europe, small-pet cremation prices vary by country but follow the same logic: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a fish always falls in the lowest weight band. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 / EUR 250[3] for pets under 2 kg and up to 10 kg respectively. Ask any provider near Spain what they'd return for your fish's size.

For a koi or large pond fish near Spain, individual cremation at the small-pet rate makes sense. For small aquarium fish, many European families choose a garden burial instead, which is allowed in many countries on your own land if you follow local rules on keeping clear of water. Ask local providers for both individual and collective prices.

Local rules in Spain

Rules about pets after death are set locally, and fish are usually covered by the same rules as other small pets. Garden burial is often allowed on land you own, with limits near wells and water. Scattering ashes directly into lakes and rivers may need permission. Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places, and some ban releasing goldfish outright.

A calm plan for a fish's aftercare

  1. Book an aquatic vet if an old or sick fish is clearly suffering. A gentle overdose of anesthetic lets it drift off without distress.
  2. Settle the aftercare question when you book, so there's no confusion about whether your fish goes on to a crematory from the vet or comes home with you.
  3. Carry it in a tub of water from its own tank or pond, lid on, with a battery air pump for a long drive.
  4. Decide whether you want to stay. Being present feels right to many people, but saying your goodbye at home beforehand is just as valid.
  5. Choose private cremation, communal cremation or a home burial and ask for the total in writing before you leave.
  6. Watch the remaining fish closely for a week or so, above all when infection was part of the story.

Small memorials for a small life in Spain

Some families in Spain scatter a koi's ashes around a favorite tree, under the waterfall's edge stones or in a flower bed where the fish could be seen from the house. If you'd like to use a public park or lake, check the rules first and choose a quiet, respectful spot away from paths.

Questions people ask

Do winters in Spain affect fish burial?

In the colder parts of Spain, frozen ground can make digging impossible for months. Keep your fish sealed in the freezer until spring, or arrange cremation in the meantime. In Spain, one of the coldest places we cover, average winter lows reach about °F.

Why do pond fish die in hot weather in Spain?

Warm water holds less oxygen, and on hot, still nights levels drop lowest around dawn. In hot parts of Spain, such as Spain where summer highs average about °F, an air pump or fountain helps, and a dead fish should be removed and frozen promptly.

Can I keep a koi's ashes outdoors by the pond in Spain?

Yes, if the container can cope with the weather. Choose a sealed, frost-proof urn in stone, metal or glazed ceramic, or place a small inner urn inside a hollow garden ornament. Ordinary wood and unglazed pottery crack in freezing weather and fade in strong sun. Set it on a firm base away from the splash zone, and consider burying most of the ashes and keeping only a little on display.

How many communities do you cover in Spain?

We currently have local fish aftercare guides for 17 communities in Spain, including Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules for burial and scattering, and how to find a provider that accepts fish.

Who can take my remaining fish if I give up the pond in Spain?

Ask aquarium shops, pond societies, rehoming groups and keepers you know. Some shops take fish for store credit or simply for free. Releasing them into open water is restricted in many places, however suitable it looks, because pet fish bring diseases and unbalance native wildlife.

How much does fish cremation cost in Spain?

A fish nearly always falls in the smallest weight band, so expect the provider's minimum price for a small pet. Communal cremation is cheaper and returns no ashes. Home collection, urns and keepsakes add to the total. Ask for an itemized written quote, and ask what they'd return for your fish's size before paying for a private cremation.
