Fish & Koi Cremation in Catalonia

Catalonia, Spain

Fish & Koi Cremation in Catalonia: what to know

Across Catalonia, many families keep garden ponds, and pond losses tend to cluster at the turn of the seasons: the first hot spell, when warm water holds less oxygen, and the spring thaw, when fish start feeding again in water full of winter waste. Testing the water the day a fish dies protects the rest of the pond.

Finding someone to cremate a fish in Catalonia usually starts with your vet or a local pet crematory, but it's worth asking directly whether they accept fish, because not all do. Fish stores and koi clubs across Catalonia often know which providers other keepers trust. Freezing your fish first means none of this has to be rushed.

Local attitudes to cremation

Roughly 50.11%[1] of funerals in Catalonia end in cremation, so plenty of families mix both traditions, and couples sometimes disagree over a fish. One wants a grave by the pond; the other wants something to keep. A compromise works well: cremate the fish, keep a little of the ashes indoors and bury the rest beside a marginal plant near the water. Ashes carry no disease, so the pond stays safe, and you get both a keepsake and a place to visit.

Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) publishes the Catalonia rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Fish cremation quotes in Catalonia: what's normal

Across Europe, small-pet cremation prices vary by country but follow the same logic: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a fish always falls in the lowest weight band. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 / EUR 250[2] for pets under 2 kg and up to 10 kg respectively. Ask any provider near Catalonia what they'd return for your fish's size.

For a koi or large pond fish near Catalonia, individual cremation at the small-pet rate makes sense. For small aquarium fish, many European families choose a garden burial instead, which is allowed in many countries on your own land if you follow local rules on keeping clear of water. Ask local providers for both individual and collective prices.

What Catalonia allows for a pet fish

Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places. Often there's no licence written for them at all, and any inspection covers the equipment rather than how pets are handled. That puts the questions in your hands: ask in writing how a small body is labeled from drop-off to return and whether the cremation is truly individual. Rules on burial and scattering in Catalonia follow.

Step by step, from tank to goodbye

  1. Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour once your fish is out of the water.
  2. Wrap your fish in a damp paper towel or cloth, then seal and label the bag; nobody in your Catalonia home wants a surprise in the freezer.
  3. Check on the survivors: aeration, filter, heater and a water test. If more than one fish looks unwell, call a vet who sees fish.
  4. Ask your vet or a local fish store which crematories near Catalonia accept fish.
  5. Choose private, communal or a burial, and ask for a written total before you agree.
  6. Drop your fish off in a cooler with ice packs, or book collection if it's a heavy koi you can't carry safely.
  7. Plan a small goodbye, especially if children were involved: a drawing, a stone or a plant for the spot.

Ways to mark the spot

A traditional Japanese fish print, gyotaku, can be made from a photo rather than the fish itself, and some artists will paint one of your koi from pictures. It's a striking way to remember a fish with distinctive markings. Others in Catalonia keep a scale shed in the pond or the fish's name on a small plaque.

Questions people ask

Is it legal to flush or release a fish in Catalonia?

Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places because non-native fish can spread disease and harm native species. Flushing a dead fish isn't a good idea either, as not all wastewater is fully treated. Freeze the fish and choose a burial or cremation instead.

How many communities do you cover in Catalonia?

We currently have local fish aftercare guides for 1 communities in Catalonia, including Barcelona. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules for burial and scattering, and how to find a provider that accepts fish.

Can I scatter my koi's ashes in a lake or river in Catalonia?

It depends on who manages the water, and some public waters require permission. Scattering around your own pond, in the garden rather than into the water, avoids the question and keeps the memorial close. If you use a public place, choose a quiet spot and check the rules first.

Can I bury a fish in my garden in Catalonia?

Usually yes, on land you own, with sensible care: wrap the fish in paper or cotton and keep well away from ponds, streams and wells. Local rules can be stricter, and landlords may object. A large planter with a new plant is a good alternative.

Do pet crematories in Catalonia accept fish?

Many do, particularly for larger fish such as koi and pond goldfish. Some decline very small fish because there's nothing meaningful to return, or offer communal cremation or a symbolic return instead. Call ahead with your fish's length and weight and ask what they'd expect to give back.

Can I keep a koi's ashes outdoors by the pond in Catalonia?

Yes, if the container can cope with the weather. Choose a sealed, frost-proof urn in stone, metal or glazed ceramic, or place a small inner urn inside a hollow garden ornament. Ordinary wood and unglazed pottery crack in freezing weather and fade in strong sun. Set it on a firm base away from the splash zone, and consider burying most of the ashes and keeping only a little on display.
