Murcia, Spain
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Murcia picture
Murcia is one of the hottest cities in Spain, and summer afternoons regularly climb well past 35°C. If your pet dies at home in July or August, act quickly: close the shutters, lay your pet on the coolest tiled floor wrapped in a sheet, and surround them with frozen bottles or cold packs. In this heat a collection the same day is usually wiser than waiting until the following morning.
Many families in Murcia live in apartment blocks in the city centre and its barrios, while others have houses with patios out in the pedanías of the surrounding huerta. In a block without a lift, carrying a larger pet down several flights needs two people, so mention it early. Many clinics in Murcia arrange cremation with a provider they already use and can keep your pet for a short time while you decide.
Local fish stores in Murcia are often an overlooked source of help. Staff see fish die every week and many know which vets and crematories will take a customer's fish. Some stores will also test a water sample for you, which is worth doing the same day a fish dies without an obvious reason. Take a clean jar of tank or pond water with you and ask for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH readings.
About 447,000 people live in Murcia.
Families in Murcia often end up using a provider from Alicante (43 miles), Valencia (110 miles) and Granada (146 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
50.11%[1]
In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).
10 million[2]
About 10 million US households keep freshwater fish.
13%[3]
13% of UK households keep an indoor fish tank.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation habits in Spain, and what they mean for a fish
Roughly 50.11%[1] of funerals in Spain end in cremation, so plenty of families mix both traditions, and couples sometimes disagree over a fish. One wants a grave by the pond; the other wants something to keep. A compromise works well: cremate the fish, keep a little of the ashes indoors and bury the rest beside a marginal plant near the water. Ashes carry no disease, so the pond stays safe, and you get both a keepsake and a place to visit.
For the Spain figure we rely on Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Murcia rather than as pet data.
What the seasons mean for fish in Murcia
Local weather affects fish in two ways. Heat lowers the oxygen in pond and tank water and speeds up decay, so warm-weather losses need prompt action. Cold can freeze ponds and ground alike, so a winter burial may have to wait. Your provider in Murcia will know the seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest at this time of year.

What fish cremation costs in Murcia
Europe has about 17.6 million[5] home aquariums, so fish owners are far from unusual. In Murcia, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, but you can contact one directly too. Local rules in Spain
Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places. Often there's no licence written for them at all, and any inspection covers the equipment rather than how pets are handled. That puts the questions in your hands: ask in writing how a small body is labeled from drop-off to return and whether the cremation is truly individual. Rules on burial and scattering in Spain follow.
A calm plan for a fish's aftercare
- Net your fish out gently and rest it on a soft cloth while you think.
- Freeze it the same day, sealed and wrapped. A frozen fish keeps for weeks, so the clock stops here.
- Work out its size: measure from nose to the fork of the tail and note the rough weight. Providers will ask.
- Tell the family, children included, plainly and truthfully. Slipping in a lookalike rarely ends well.
- Compare two options, such as private cremation with the ashes in a small urn against burying your fish beneath something newly planted.
- Book your choice and find out how they keep track of your fish from hand-over to the day it comes back.
Small memorials for a small life in Murcia
Pets in Murcia often share a slow, outdoor rhythm: mornings on a patio, evenings on a terrace once the heat eases, family gatherings in the huerta at weekends. Those shared places are often where people want their farewell. If you have a garden or a family plot outside the city and are thinking of burial, ask the town hall first, because rules differ between municipalities and cremation avoids the question entirely.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Murcia?
The closest communities we cover are Alicante (about 43 miles), Valencia (about 110 miles) and Granada (about 146 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Murcia too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Murcia page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?
Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
What should I do with the other fish after one dies?
Remove the dead fish quickly, then test the water for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature. Check the filter, pump and heater. If readings are off, do a partial water change and hold off feeding for a day. Watch the others closely for a week. If more fish look unwell, a vet who sees fish can examine a freshly chilled body.
Can a vet put my sick fish to sleep in Murcia?
Yes. A vet with fish experience can end its suffering by adding an anesthetic overdose to its water, and the fish simply falls asleep. Vets advise against home methods such as freezing a live fish or flushing it. Transport it in its own water with a lid on, and raise aftercare during the same appointment, so the vet can arrange cremation or hand the body back to you for burial.
How much ash does a fish leave after cremation?
Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, and fish tend toward the low end because they're mostly water with fine bones. A large koi might return a few ounces, enough for a small urn. A pond goldfish may leave a keepsake vial's worth. A small tank fish may leave nothing you could collect separately.
