Lisbon, Portugal
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Lisbon picture
Lisbon is a city of hills, stairs and narrow streets, and many pets live in older apartment buildings in Alfama, Graça, Campo de Ourique or Arroios, often several floors up with no lift. When you ask about collection, say which floor you are on, whether the stairwell is narrow, and whether a car can stop outside. On steep lanes where parking is almost impossible, a provider may need to plan how to reach your door.
Lisbon summers are hot and dry, and a heatwave can push temperatures well above 35°C, while winters are mild and wet. If your pet dies at home in summer, close the shutters, keep them in the coolest room on a towel and place cold packs near the body. In the cooler months, an unheated room usually gives you enough time to call your vet and let family say goodbye.
Large metros are where you're most likely to find an aquatic or exotic-animal vet, and that matters when more than one fish is dying. If a koi or several tank fish die within a few days in Lisbon, chill the most recent one in the fridge rather than freezing it and call a fish vet the same day. A post-mortem can reveal a parasite or bacterial problem before it reaches the rest of your stock.
Lisbon's population is around 505,000, the largest of the 2 Portugal communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Cascais (15 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish
We don't have figures on how often people are cremated around Lisbon, and for a fish that matters less than you'd think. A better guide is to ask your vet what other fish keepers nearby usually do. Vets hear these decisions every week and can tell you which crematories take aquatic pets, whether small fish tend to be buried or sent for shared cremation, and what a fair local price looks like.
Timing a fish's aftercare in Lisbon's climate
Local weather affects fish in two ways. Heat lowers the oxygen in pond and tank water and speeds up decay, so warm-weather losses need prompt action. Cold can freeze ponds and ground alike, so a winter burial may have to wait. Your provider in Lisbon will know the seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest at this time of year.

Budgeting for a koi or tank fish in Lisbon
For a koi or large pond fish near Lisbon, individual cremation at the small-pet rate makes sense. For small aquarium fish, many European families choose a garden burial instead, which is allowed in many countries on your own land if you follow local rules on keeping clear of water. Ask local providers for both individual and collective prices.

Burial, scattering and release rules in Portugal
A loss sometimes leads families to give up fish keeping altogether. If you're rehoming the fish that are left, offer them to a fish store, a club or another keeper; don't be tempted to free them in a local stream or lake, however healthy the water looks. Escaped pet fish spread parasites and compete with native species. For the fish you've lost, the local rules in Portugal are below.
A calm plan for a fish's aftercare
- If a big koi is going for private cremation, take its length and get a rough weight by standing on bathroom scales holding the bagged fish.
- Photograph its markings before it goes in the freezer. A photo can be checked against the paperwork later, and many families treasure it regardless.
- Wrap it in an old towel inside two strong bags and freeze it lying flat so it fits a cooler later.
- Call a provider that has cremated fish before and ask how much ash it expects and how it tracks each pet.
- Work out the urn size with the urn size calculator before you buy anything.
- Drive it over in an insulated box with frozen gel packs, and think ahead about a home for the ashes, whether that's indoors on a shelf, out in the garden or beside the pond.
Small memorials for a small life in Lisbon
Most aftercare in Lisbon is arranged in Portuguese, though many vets and providers are comfortable in English, which helps the city's large international community. Your vet is usually the first call: many practices can arrange cremation or explain the options. Ask whether the cremation is individual, so only your pet's ashes come back, or collective, and what is included in the price, such as collection and an urn.

Questions people ask
Do pet crematoria in Portugal accept fish?
Many do, especially for larger fish such as koi. Ask for individual (private) and collective (communal) prices for the smallest weight band, and ask whether a small fish will leave anything to return. Some providers suggest collective cremation or a symbolic return for very small fish.
Where can I bury a fish if I live in an apartment in Lisbon?
A large planter on a balcony or windowsill works well for a small fish. Wrap it in paper, bury it in fresh compost and plant something on top. Don't bury pets in public parks or communal gardens without permission. If you'd rather not bury at all, communal cremation through a vet is a simple option.
How long can I keep a dead fish in the freezer?
Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.
What can I keep if my fish was too small to leave ashes?
Plenty. A framed photo, a painting or print of the fish, its favorite tank ornament, a plant grown over a garden burial or a painted stone all work. Some crematories offer a token vial with a certificate, though the contents may be mostly from the chamber. Ask what's inside before you pay, and choose whatever feels like your fish.
How do I explain a fish's death to my child?
Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.
Can you actually cremate a fish in Lisbon?
Yes. Many pet crematories that handle small animals will cremate a fish, and a koi or large goldfish is cremated much like any small pet. The limit is size: a betta, guppy or tetra may leave no ash that can be separated and returned. Call first, give the length and rough weight, and ask what they'd expect to give back.
