Cascais, Lisbon
Finding fish aftercare in Cascais
Pets in Cascais share their outdoor time with the seafront promenade toward Estoril, the cliffs at Boca do Inferno, the wind-blown dunes at Guincho and the trails of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Owners often picture the Atlantic when they think of their animal. Rules on scattering vary by place, so ask the câmara municipal first, and keep away from crowded beaches.
Summers in Cascais are hot and dry, though Atlantic breezes take the edge off, and winters are mild and rainy. If your pet dies on a warm day, bring the body indoors, close the shutters and set frozen packs wrapped in cloth around it on a cool floor. From November to March, a shaded room does the job overnight. Many local vets can hold a body briefly.
One advantage of a community the size of Cascais is that people talk. Your vet, the feed store or the person who sold you your pond fish will usually know whether anyone locally takes fish for cremation and how they treat them. Ask directly what they'd do with their own fish. A straight answer from someone who knows the area is worth more than a glossy website.
Cascais is home to about 64,000 people, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Lisbon communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Lisbon, about 16 miles (25 km) away, which is where some providers serving Cascais are based.
Our pages for Lisbon (15 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Cascais as well.

Cremation in Portugal: a little context
Whatever the local customs around human funerals, fish aftercare comes down to a few honest choices: private cremation for a larger fish, communal cremation when you don't need ashes returned, or a burial. Many families in Cascais combine a simple goodbye with a keepsake that needs no ash at all, such as a framed photo, a painted stone or the tank's favorite ornament.
Timing a fish's aftercare in Cascais's climate
Wherever you are, the first rule for a fish is the same: take it out of the water as soon as you're sure it has died, then seal it and freeze it. In warm weather, do it within the hour, because decay fouls the water quickly. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial until spring.

Europe has about 17.6 million[4] home aquariums, so fish owners are far from unusual. Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Lisbon
A fish is small, but the rules around water are not. Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, and don't flush a fish, dead or alive. Invasive fish released by owners are a real problem in many regions. For burial and scattering, the rules for Lisbon are summarised below, and your city or council may add its own.
The first day after a fish dies
- Book an aquatic vet if an old or sick fish is clearly suffering. A gentle overdose of anesthetic lets it drift off without distress.
- Settle the aftercare question when you book, so there's no confusion about whether your fish goes on to a crematory from the vet or comes home with you.
- Carry it in a tub of water from its own tank or pond, lid on, with a battery air pump for a long drive.
- Decide whether you want to stay. Being present feels right to many people, but saying your goodbye at home beforehand is just as valid.
- Choose private cremation, communal cremation or a home burial and ask for the total in writing before you leave.
- Watch the remaining fish closely for a week or so, above all when infection was part of the story.
Ways to mark the spot
Cascais runs from the old fishing quarter and apartment blocks around the bay to gated villas in Quinta da Marinha and houses climbing toward the Sintra hills, with Estoril and Parede along the coast. Many homes sit behind gates or inside condominiums with a porter. For a collection, give gate codes and parking details. In summer, traffic on the Marginal coast road can crawl, so allow extra time.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Lisbon to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Lisbon (roughly 16 miles from Cascais) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is a fish really a pet worth cremating?
If it mattered to you, yes. Koi can live 30 to 40 years and many families have kept the same fish for decades. A goldfish can live 6 to 7 years. The time you spent feeding, watching and caring for a fish is real, and so is the grief. Choose the goodbye that fits the fish and your family.
Is water cremation available for pets in Portugal?
It depends on the country and even the region. Alkaline hydrolysis, sometimes called resomation, is offered for pets in parts of Europe, and a Dutch life-cycle study cited by the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance found it had far less environmental impact than flame cremation[6]. Ask providers near Cascais whether they offer it and accept fish. If not, flame cremation or a garden burial are both fine choices.
What should I do with the other fish after one dies?
Remove the dead fish quickly, then test the water for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature. Check the filter, pump and heater. If readings are off, do a partial water change and hold off feeding for a day. Watch the others closely for a week. If more fish look unwell, a vet who sees fish can examine a freshly chilled body.
How much ash does a fish leave after cremation?
Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, and fish tend toward the low end because they're mostly water with fine bones. A large koi might return a few ounces, enough for a small urn. A pond goldfish may leave a keepsake vial's worth. A small tank fish may leave nothing you could collect separately.
Is it okay to flush a dead fish?
It's better not to. Fish can carry parasites and bacteria that shouldn't reach rivers, and wastewater isn't always fully treated, especially during storms. Never flush a fish that might still be alive. Burying it in the garden or a planter, or freezing it until you arrange cremation, is kinder and safer, and children often find a small burial less upsetting than a flush.
