Cremation in Germany: a little context
In Germany, about 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this normal, pet crematories are usually plentiful and some specialize in small animals. For a fish, that means more choice: private or communal cremation, sometimes water cremation, and keepsakes like glass paperweights or pendants. It also means more providers to compare, which is worth doing, because prices for the smallest weight band vary more than you'd think.

What Schleswig-Holstein allows for a pet fish
Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for Schleswig-Holstein, set out below, are all you need.
In Germany, home burial of a pet on your own land needs at least 50 cm of soil cover and isn't allowed in water-protection areas, which matters if your garden is near a well or stream. Koi keeping is popular, and pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking and whether fish are accepted.
The first day after a fish dies
- Make sure. Watch the gills and fins for a full minute. A fish lying still on the bottom can be chilled, stunned or very weak rather than gone.
- Lift your fish out with a net once you're certain; left in the tank, it will start to spoil the water for the rest.
- Seal it in a bag or tub, press the air out and freeze it. Chill it in the fridge instead if you want a vet to find out why it died.
- Test the water the same day for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature, and watch the remaining fish closely.
- Decide by size. Private cremation makes sense for a koi or big goldfish; a small tank fish is usually better buried, potted under a plant or cremated communally.
- Call a provider and ask what they'd return for your fish's length and weight, and get the total in writing.
Keeping your fish part of the family story

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Kiel?

Why does the Kiel page quote a human cremation rate?
