Fish & Koi Cremation in Schleswig-Holstein: what to know
Families across Schleswig-Holstein say goodbye to fish in different ways. Some cremate a long-lived koi and keep the ashes by the pond; many bury a small tank fish in the garden or in a planter; others choose communal cremation through a vet. All of them are kinder than flushing, which can carry parasites and bacteria into local water.
Across Schleswig-Holstein, many families keep garden ponds, and pond losses tend to cluster at the turn of the seasons: the first hot spell, when warm water holds less oxygen, and the spring thaw, when fish start feeding again in water full of winter waste. Testing the water the day a fish dies protects the rest of the pond.

How Schleswig-Holstein thinks about cremation
Some pet crematories in Schleswig-Holstein, where the human cremation rate is near 76.0%[1], let families attend. For a fish, an attended cremation can be brief and quiet: a few minutes to say goodbye before the chamber door closes, and sometimes the chance to wait for the ashes. Not every provider offers it for small pets, and it usually costs more, so ask whether it's possible, how long it takes and whether children are welcome.
We take the Schleswig-Holstein percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Fish cremation prices for Schleswig-Holstein families
Across Europe, small-pet cremation prices vary by country but follow the same logic: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a fish always falls in the lowest weight band. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 / EUR 250[2] for pets under 2 kg and up to 10 kg respectively. Ask any provider near Schleswig-Holstein what they'd return for your fish's size.
Europe has about 17.6 million[3] home aquariums, so fish owners are far from unusual. In Schleswig-Holstein, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, but you can contact one directly too. The table shows published small-pet prices from several countries to give you a feel for Germany.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland (under 2 kg) | n/a | from €150 |
| Germany (all sizes) | €85 to €205 | €165 to €375 |
| Netherlands (range across providers) | €49 to €330 | €70 to €700 |
| Norway (1–20 kg) | from NOK 1,190 | NOK 3,790 |

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Schleswig-Holstein
Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places. Often there's no licence written for them at all, and any inspection covers the equipment rather than how pets are handled. That puts the questions in your hands: ask in writing how a small body is labeled from drop-off to return and whether the cremation is truly individual. Rules on burial and scattering in Schleswig-Holstein follow.
In Germany, home burial of a pet on your own land needs at least 50 cm of soil cover and isn't allowed in water-protection areas, which matters if your garden is near a well or stream. Koi keeping is popular, and pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking and whether fish are accepted.
Step by step, from tank to goodbye
- If a sitter finds your fish dead while you're away, have them take it out carefully, wrap it in a paper towel and put it in the freezer in a labeled bag.
- Ask for a quick photo of the tank or pond plus a mention of anything odd, like a pump that's gone quiet or water turning cloudy.
- Have them check the others and switch off automatic feeders if the water looks off.
- Make no aftercare decisions from a distance. A frozen fish will keep until you're home.
- When you're back, run your own water test, and only then weigh up burial against cremation without any rush.
- Thank your sitter. Finding a dead pet is upsetting for them too, even when it's someone else's fish.
Memorials that suit a fish
Many families in Schleswig-Holstein mark a fish's life beside the pond: a flat engraved stone at the edge, a new water lily or a marginal plant bought in its name. If you have ashes from a large koi, you can scatter a little in the garden around the pond, rather than into the water, and keep the rest in a small urn or glass keepsake.

Questions people ask
Who can take my remaining fish if I give up the pond in Schleswig-Holstein?
Ask aquarium shops, pond societies, rehoming groups and keepers you know. Some shops take fish for store credit or simply for free. Releasing them into open water is restricted in many places, however suitable it looks, because pet fish bring diseases and unbalance native wildlife.
Do winters in Schleswig-Holstein affect fish burial?
In the colder parts of Schleswig-Holstein, frozen ground can make digging impossible for months. Keep your fish sealed in the freezer until spring, or arrange cremation in the meantime. In Schleswig-Holstein, one of the coldest places we cover, average winter lows reach about °F.
Where can I find out why my fish died in Schleswig-Holstein?
An aquatic vet is the best first stop, and pond clubs or aquarium shops generally know one. Some university vet schools and fish health labs also examine samples. Keep the body chilled in the fridge rather than frozen and call quickly, since ice crystals ruin the tissue a pathologist needs. Knowing the cause can protect the fish you still have.
Do pet crematories in Schleswig-Holstein accept fish?
Many do, particularly for larger fish such as koi and pond goldfish. Some decline very small fish because there's nothing meaningful to return, or offer communal cremation or a symbolic return instead. Call ahead with your fish's length and weight and ask what they'd expect to give back.
What's the cheapest respectful goodbye for a fish in Schleswig-Holstein?
A garden or planter burial costs almost nothing and gives you a place to visit. If you'd rather not bury, ask your vet whether they include small pets in a communal cremation, usually the lowest-cost cremation available. A photo or plant memorial needs no ash at all.
Can I scatter my koi's ashes in a lake or river in Schleswig-Holstein?
It depends on who manages the water, and some public waters require permission. Scattering around your own pond, in the garden rather than into the water, avoids the question and keeps the memorial close. If you use a public place, choose a quiet spot and check the rules first.
