Hamburg, Germany
What happens when a pet fish dies in Hamburg
If a pet goes missing and is found dead in Hamburg, the city's guidance describes checking for identification, such as a microchip matched to registration records, and notifying the owner. The animal is held for a period and released through an approved pet funeral service rather than handed directly to you. Keeping your pet's chip registration up to date makes that process faster and gives you the chance to choose the aftercare.
Hamburg is a city of apartments, canals and busy roads, and many pets live in upper-floor flats. If your pet dies at home, a pet aftercare service can usually collect from your flat or your vet. Give them the floor number and whether there is a lift, especially for a larger animal. Many Hamburg owners also ask for an individual cremation so that the ashes returned are only their pet's.
Emergency vet hospitals in Hamburg are open around the clock, but most are not set up to treat fish, and a fish that has already died doesn't need an emergency visit. Net it out, wrap it and put it in the freezer. Everything else can wait until a normal working day, when you can call a crematory or your vet calmly and ask what they can do for a fish of that size.
With roughly 1,841,000 residents, Hamburg is one of the Germany communities we cover.

How Germany thinks about cremation
With about 76.0%[1] of people cremated, cremation is firmly part of local life in Germany. Families who keep ashes at home for a parent often feel the same about a long-lived pet, and a koi that has been in the family for twenty years is no exception. If you want your fish home in a small urn beside the pond or on a shelf, you'll find plenty of people here who understand exactly why.
We take the Germany rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Hamburg, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
What the seasons mean for fish in Hamburg
Wherever you are, the first rule for a fish is the same: take it out of the water as soon as you're sure it has died, then seal it and freeze it. In warm weather, do it within the hour, because decay fouls the water quickly. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial until spring.

Paying for a fish's goodbye in Hamburg
For a koi or large pond fish near Hamburg, individual cremation at the small-pet rate makes sense. For small aquarium fish, many European families choose a garden burial instead, which is allowed in many countries on your own land if you follow local rules on keeping clear of water. Ask local providers for both individual and collective prices.

Local rules in Germany
You don't need a permit to have a fish cremated, but what you do with the body or the ashes can be governed by local rules. The most important one for fish keepers applies to living fish: never release a fish, or empty a pond or tank, into a creek, lake or drain. Many places restrict releasing non-native fish because they can spread disease and crowd out wildlife.
Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg publishes Hamburg's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation.
In Germany, home burial of a pet on your own land needs at least 50 cm of soil cover and isn't allowed in water-protection areas, which matters if your garden is near a well or stream. Koi keeping is popular, and pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking and whether fish are accepted.
Step by step, from tank to goodbye
- If your child's fish dies while they're at school, leave it where it is or chill it, and tell them honestly when they get home.
- Skip the secret replacement. Most children spot the difference, and finding out later hurts more than hearing the truth now.
- Let them see the fish if they want to, resting in a soft cloth, and give plain, simple answers to whatever they ask.
- Offer two or three choices for how to say goodbye: a windowsill flowerpot, a place in the garden or a little box they can hold on to.
- Set a time for the goodbye, so they can make a card, pick a stone or choose words to say.
- Leave the tank empty for a while and hold off on new-fish talk unless your child brings it up first.
Memorials that suit a fish
Hamburg's weather is mild but damp, with grey winters and cool summers, so there is usually a little time to think before arranging collection. Keep your pet cool and dry indoors. Garden space is scarce in the inner districts, and the high water table near the Elbe and the canals makes home burial impractical for many households, so cremation with ashes returned is the route most owners take.

Questions people ask
How do Germany attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Germany human cremation rate at about 76.0%[1]. We show it on the Hamburg page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hamburg?
Usually yes. Kiel is about 54 miles away, Bremen is about 59 miles away and Hanover is about 82 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What should I do with the other fish after one dies?
Remove the dead fish quickly, then test the water for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature. Check the filter, pump and heater. If readings are off, do a partial water change and hold off feeding for a day. Watch the others closely for a week. If more fish look unwell, a vet who sees fish can examine a freshly chilled body.
Where can I bury a fish if I live in an apartment in Hamburg?
A large planter on a balcony or windowsill works well for a small fish. Wrap it in paper, bury it in fresh compost and plant something on top. Don't bury pets in public parks or communal gardens without permission. If you'd rather not bury at all, communal cremation through a vet is a simple option.
Do pet crematoria in Germany accept fish?
Many do, especially for larger fish such as koi. Ask for individual (private) and collective (communal) prices for the smallest weight band, and ask whether a small fish will leave anything to return. Some providers suggest collective cremation or a symbolic return for very small fish.
How long can I keep a dead fish in the freezer?
Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.
