South Jordan, Utah
Who to call first in South Jordan when a fish dies
South Jordan runs from the Jordan River west toward the Oquirrh Mountains, and much of the west side is the Daybreak master-planned community, with townhomes, small lots and homeowners associations. HOA rules may limit what you can place in a yard, including memorial plantings or stones, so check before planning anything outdoors. An indoor urn or keepsake avoids that question entirely.
July highs in South Jordan reach the mid-90s, and the newer streets have few mature trees to shade a house. Should a pet die on a scorching afternoon, lay the body on a towel in the basement or on cool tile, and ring an aftercare provider that same evening. Winter lows around 24 degrees are no excuse to delay, because a furnace-warmed room works against you.
Around South Jordan, plenty of families keep fish in garden ponds, stock tanks or a farm pond, and losses often happen in summer or right after the ice melts. If a fish dies in a pond that also serves livestock or feeds a creek, lift it out quickly and don't bury it near the water's edge. A burial further up the garden, or a cremation, keeps anything that caused the death away from the other fish.
About 87,614 people live in South Jordan, which makes it the 10th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve South Jordan are based about 15 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Riverton (3 miles), West Jordan (3 miles) and Herriman (5 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

How Utah thinks about cremation
In Utah, about 46.1%[1] of people are cremated, so it's still something of a minority choice. That can mean your vet sends small animals some distance to a crematory. For a fish, the distance hardly matters if it's frozen promptly. What matters more is an honest conversation about size: a large koi leaves enough ash for an urn, while a tetra or guppy may leave nothing separate.
For the Utah figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in South Jordan rather than as pet data.
Season by season: fish losses in South Jordan
In a climate like South Jordan's, the freezer is your friend all year. In summer it stops a dead fish breaking down; in winter it holds your fish until the ground thaws. Seal the fish in a bag with the air pressed out, wrap it in a towel and label it. You can then choose cremation or burial when the season and your own head allow.
In South Jordan, the pond you might lose a fish from in July is the same one that ices over in January, February and December, and the right aftercare shifts with the season. A summer loss calls for speed: out of the water and into the freezer before the heat does its work. A winter loss calls for patience, because the fish can stay frozen until the ground opens up. Plan the goodbye around the season you're in, not around a deadline.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
Cost is a fair worry, even for a small pet. In one US survey of pet owners, 61%[5] said the cost of aftercare was a concern. The good news for fish keepers in South Jordan is that there are low-cost options: communal cremation through a vet, a garden or planter burial that costs next to nothing, or a private cremation only for the larger fish where ash is worth keeping.

What Utah allows for a pet fish
A fish is small, but the rules around water are not. Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, and don't flush a fish, dead or alive. Invasive fish released by owners are a real problem in many regions. For burial and scattering, the rules for Utah are summarised below, and your city or council may add its own.
The official Utah local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in South Jordan.
For Utah's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Utah guide. Local rules in South Jordan can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
The first day after a fish dies
- If a sitter finds your fish dead while you're away, have them take it out carefully, wrap it in a paper towel and put it in the freezer in a labeled bag.
- Ask for a quick photo of the tank or pond plus a mention of anything odd, like a pump that's gone quiet or water turning cloudy.
- Have them check the others and switch off automatic feeders if the water looks off.
- Make no aftercare decisions from a distance. A frozen fish will keep until you're home.
- When you're back, test the water yourself, then choose between burial and cremation calmly.
- Thank your sitter. Discovering a dead pet is hard on the person who finds it, whoever the fish belonged to.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Many South Jordan households are young families, and pets here often include rabbits, guinea pigs, fish and reptiles as well as cats. Children may want a say in the decisions that follow. Having the animal cremated on its own, with the ashes returned, gives them something to hold, and a small painted box or jar can become their own memorial project for a weekend afternoon.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Utah?
For people, yes: about 46.1%[1] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in South Jordan follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from South Jordan?
Usually yes. Riverton is about 3 miles away, West Jordan is about 3 miles away and Herriman is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve South Jordan actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Salt Lake City, about 15 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for South Jordan and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does the South Jordan climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How much ash does a fish leave after cremation?
Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, and fish tend toward the low end because they're mostly water with fine bones. A large koi might return a few ounces, enough for a small urn. A pond goldfish may leave a keepsake vial's worth. A small tank fish may leave nothing you could collect separately.
Is there free support for grieving a pet in Utah?
Yes. Veterinary students trained by grief counselors answer the free Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline, and Tufts University runs a free Pet Loss Support Helpline on weekday evenings. Both take calls from anywhere in the US. A long-lived koi or a child's first goldfish is a real loss, and they'll treat it as one.
