Bluffdale, Utah
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Bluffdale picture
July afternoons reach the mid-90s and wind often funnels through the gap at the Point of the Mountain, while winter brings freezing nights from December through February. In summer heat, bring the body inside to a cool room without delay and arrange collection that day. In winter a garage may seem cold enough, but temperatures swing widely between day and night, so indoors is safer.
The Jordan River Parkway trail runs through Bluffdale, and paragliders drifting off the Point of the Mountain are a familiar sight from much of town. Both involve public land where scattering ashes needs permission. With larger lots than most of the valley, many families here choose a corner of their own property instead, perhaps under a cottonwood or beside a garden path they used every day.
Home burial is common in and around Bluffdale, especially where families have land. For a fish, it's quick and meaningful: plant a water iris, a hosta or a small shrub on top so the spot becomes part of the garden. The one thing to avoid is burying a fish that died of disease close to a pond or stream, where rain can carry anything left in the soil back into the water.
With roughly 19,506 residents, Bluffdale is the 49th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Bluffdale are based about 20 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
For a second opinion on price, Riverton (3 miles, a larger centre), Draper (4 miles, a larger centre) and Herriman (4 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Bluffdale routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

How Utah thinks about cremation
With a human cremation rate of 46.1%[1] in Utah, pet cemeteries tend to be more common here than in high-cremation areas, and a few will accept very small pets or their ashes. A plot for a fish is unusual and normally costs more than a cremation, but it can make sense if other family pets already rest there. Ask whether they take small caskets or ashes only, and what the yearly upkeep covers.
The Utah percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Bluffdale, not as a count of pets.
Season by season: fish losses in Bluffdale
With hot summers and freezing winters, burial timing in Bluffdale can be awkward. Baked summer soil is hard to dig and frozen winter soil is impossible. Cremation sidesteps both, and for a large koi it gives you ashes you can scatter or bury whenever the ground allows. For a small fish, a big planter on the patio or balcony is a year-round alternative.
Temperature swings in Bluffdale matter for tank fish too. Summer heat can push aquarium water too high if the air conditioning is off, and a winter power cut can chill a tropical tank fast. If a fish dies after either, check the heater and thermometer before you think about aftercare. Then freeze your fish, stabilize the tank and decide calmly.

What fish cremation costs in Bluffdale
Expect to pay the provider's small-pet minimum for your fish in Bluffdale. PetMD says US communal cremation starts from about $50[5], and Embrace Pet Insurance gives wider national ranges for private cremation and aquamation, shown below. Before you pay for a private cremation, ask how much ash the provider expects to return. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], and a fish can come in at the low end of that.

Rules worth knowing in Utah
A loss sometimes leads families to give up fish keeping altogether. If you're rehoming the fish that are left, offer them to a fish store, a club or another keeper; don't be tempted to free them in a local stream or lake, however healthy the water looks. Escaped pet fish spread parasites and compete with native species. For the fish you've lost, the local rules in Utah are below.
To find your county or city office in Utah, start with the official Utah local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Utah level first; our Utah rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Bluffdale or your HOA adds anything.
From the first minute to the last goodbye
- Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour once your fish is out of the water.
- Wrap your fish in a damp paper towel or cloth, seal it and label it so no one in Bluffdale gets a shock at the freezer.
- Check on the survivors: run a water test and confirm the filter, heater and air are working. Should several fish seem off-color, ring a vet who treats fish.
- Ask your vet or a local fish store to name crematories around Bluffdale that take fish.
- Choose private, communal or a burial, and ask for a written total before you agree.
- Drop your fish off in a cooler with ice packs, or book collection if it's a heavy koi you can't carry safely.
- Plan a small goodbye, above all when children knew the fish: a picture they draw, a painted stone or something planted there.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Utah?
For people, yes: about 46.1%[1] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bluffdale follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does the Bluffdale climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bluffdale?
Usually yes. Riverton is about 3 miles away, Draper is about 4 miles away and Herriman is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 20 miles from Bluffdale) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How long can I keep a dead fish in the freezer?
Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.
My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?
Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
