Sherman, Texas
Who will cremate a fish in Sherman?
Many Sherman families spend weekends up at Lake Texoma or at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge on its southern arm. Scattering ashes on federal land or water there requires checking with the managing agency first. Closer to home, a flower bed, a favorite shade tree in the yard or a spot on family land needs no permission and can be visited anytime.
Sherman, the seat of Grayson County, sits along US 75 about 30 miles north of McKinney and roughly 15 miles south of Lake Texoma, with Denison as its close neighbor. Housing runs from tree-lined older neighborhoods near downtown and Austin College to newer subdivisions and rural homes on acreage. If you live outside the city limits, text the provider a pin drop and warn them about any cattle guard or long gravel lane.
In a place the size of Sherman, the fish that dies is sometimes a shared one: the classroom goldfish, the tank in a dentist's waiting room or the koi in a church garden. A quick word to everyone who fed and watched it helps. A teacher can let pupils choose a burial spot in the school grounds, with the principal's agreement, while a staff member keeps the fish in a freezer at home until the group has decided what to do.
Sherman is home to about 52,417 people, the 72nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is McKinney, about 30 miles (48 km) away, which is where some providers serving Sherman are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Denison (10 miles), Anna (20 miles) and Celina (23 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

How Texas thinks about cremation
In Texas, about 55.7%[1] of people are cremated. That middle ground means most people are comfortable with cremation without it being automatic. For a fish, that's a helpful place to be: nobody expects a particular choice, and providers are used to hearing different requests. Decide by size. Larger koi and goldfish suit cremation; the smallest fish often suit a burial, a planter or a communal cremation.
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Sherman only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Sherman weather, ponds and timing
Summer trips are when many Sherman pond losses happen. A neighbor feeding the fish in August may not realize that a clogged filter or a skipped top-up can starve the water of oxygen within a day. Before you travel in June, July, August and September, leave a short note: where the air pump plugs in, what normal looks like and what to do if a fish dies. The request is simple: bag it, freeze it and text you, rather than decide anything on your behalf.
Heat waves in Sherman catch out even experienced koi keepers. A pump failure during a August afternoon, a thunderstorm that stirs up the pond or an algae bloom crashing overnight can all strip oxygen from the water in hours. If several fish die at once, test the water before you do anything else, then chill the freshest body in the fridge in case a vet wants to examine it.

Paying for a fish's goodbye in Sherman
In the US, almost every fish falls into the smallest weight band on a cremation price list. CareCredit's guide puts pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5]. That minimum exists because running the chamber costs much the same for a goldfish as for a small dog. Home collection, a decorative urn and a glass keepsake all add to the total, so ask any Sherman provider for a written figure.
The full price table by size is on our Texas page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Local rules in Texas
Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places. Often there's no licence written for them at all, and any inspection covers the equipment rather than how pets are handled. That puts the questions in your hands: ask in writing how a small body is labeled from drop-off to return and whether the cremation is truly individual. Rules on burial and scattering in Texas follow.
To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.
For Texas's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Texas guide. Local rules in Sherman can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do when your fish dies in Sherman
- If a big koi is going for private cremation, take its length and get a rough weight by standing on bathroom scales holding the bagged fish.
- Photograph its markings before freezing. Some families like a picture to compare with the paperwork, and it's a lovely keepsake anyway.
- Wrap it in an old towel inside two strong bags and freeze it lying flat so it fits a cooler later.
- Call a provider that has cremated fish before and find out roughly how much ash to expect and how each pet stays identified.
- Work out the urn size with the urn size calculator before you buy anything.
- Drive it over in an insulated box with frozen gel packs, and plan where the ashes will go: a shelf indoors, the garden or around the pond.
Remembering your fish in Sherman
Sherman's August highs average around 93F, a bit milder than the Dallas area, but January lows near 34F bring the chance of ice and sleet. In hot weather, move your pet somewhere air-conditioned and lay them on a cool floor with frozen packs wrapped in cloth. In winter, an unheated mudroom or garage can keep the body cool overnight while you make arrangements.

Questions people ask
How does Sherman's weather affect fish aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Sherman, with average highs around 93°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Sherman?
Usually yes. Denison is about 10 miles away, Anna is about 20 miles away and Celina is about 23 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to McKinney to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in McKinney (roughly 30 miles from Sherman) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[1]. We show it on the Sherman page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How do I explain a fish's death to my child?
Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.
Can you actually cremate a fish in Sherman?
Yes. Many pet crematories that handle small animals will cremate a fish, and a koi or large goldfish is cremated much like any small pet. The limit is size: a betta, guppy or tetra may leave no ash that can be separated and returned. Call first, give the length and rough weight, and ask what they'd expect to give back.
