New Braunfels, Texas
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the New Braunfels picture
Life in New Braunfels revolves around its two rivers, the spring-fed Comal and the longer Guadalupe, and many families here spend summer weekends near the water with their animals. Losing a companion who shared those days can make the town feel emptier for a while. Some people choose private cremation so they can later carry a small portion of ashes back to a favorite riverside spot.
August in New Braunfels averages around 97°F, and humidity rises after the frequent summer storms that sweep up from the coast. A pet's body needs a cool room and a plan within hours during those months. Winters are mild, with January lows near 39°F. Heavy rain can also flood low-water crossings quickly in this part of Texas, so check your route before driving to a clinic during a storm.
Sometimes the fish that died in New Braunfels was the last one in the tank. Before you pack the aquarium away, pour the old water down a sink rather than into a storm drain or garden stream, and pass live plants and snails to a fellow hobbyist instead of a local pond. Those small steps keep pests and disease out of local water. Then give yourself a week or two before deciding whether to restock.
New Braunfels's population is around 122,492, the 32nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is San Antonio, about 29 miles (47 km) away, which is where some providers serving New Braunfels are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Cibolo (12 miles), Seguin (13 miles) and Schertz (14 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Cremation habits in Texas, and what they mean for a fish
Cremation accounts for about 55.7%[1] of deaths in Texas, so it's familiar but not the only tradition. That mix shows up in how local families say goodbye to fish. Some cremate a koi and keep the ashes by the pond; others bury a goldfish under a new plant and never think of cremation at all. Neither is more proper. Choose the goodbye that you'll feel good about in a year's time.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Texas figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in New Braunfels tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
New Braunfels weather, ponds and timing
If you'd like to plant something where a fish is buried, New Braunfels's heat changes the timing. A shrub or perennial put in during August, with highs around 97°F, needs watering every day just to survive. Many gardeners mark the spot now with a simple stone and add the plant beside it in the cooler months, when it will root properly. A memorial plant that thrives means more than one that wilts in its first week.
In New Braunfels's long warm season, fish keep eating and growing for most of the year, which is good for them but means pond water needs close watching. If a fish dies without an obvious cause in the hotter months, take a water sample to a fish store or test it yourself the same day. Knowing whether oxygen, ammonia or temperature was to blame can save the others.

Fish cremation quotes in New Braunfels: what's normal
In the US, almost every fish falls into the smallest weight band on a cremation price list. CareCredit's guide puts pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5]. That minimum exists because running the chamber costs much the same for a goldfish as for a small dog. Home collection, a decorative urn and a glass keepsake all add to the total, so ask any New Braunfels provider for a written figure.

Rules worth knowing in Texas
Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for Texas, set out below, are all you need.

What to do when your fish dies in New Braunfels
- Take a breath. With your fish out of the water, there's no decision that can't wait an hour.
- Wrap your fish in a damp paper towel or cloth, then seal and label the bag; nobody in your New Braunfels home wants a surprise in the freezer.
- Check on the survivors: aeration, filter, heater and a water test. If more than one fish looks unwell, call a vet who sees fish.
- Ask your vet or a local fish store to name crematories around New Braunfels that take fish.
- Choose private, communal or a burial, and ask for a written total before you agree.
- Drop your fish off in a cooler with ice packs, or arrange a pickup when a large koi is too heavy to lift and carry on your own.
- Plan a small goodbye, above all when children knew the fish: a picture they draw, a painted stone or something planted there.

New Braunfels has grown fast along Interstate 35 between San Antonio and Austin, and new subdivisions now stretch well beyond the old German town center. Many of those neighborhoods have homeowner associations and small lots, which steers families toward cremation. Providers based in San Antonio, roughly 29 miles south, often serve Comal County, so ask whether a quoted price includes collection from your address.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from New Braunfels?
Usually yes. Cibolo is about 12 miles away, Seguin is about 13 miles away and Schertz is about 14 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to San Antonio to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in San Antonio (roughly 29 miles from New Braunfels) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[1] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in New Braunfels follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does the New Braunfels climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 97°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
What can I keep if my fish was too small to leave ashes?
Plenty. A framed photo, a painting or print of the fish, its favorite tank ornament, a plant grown over a garden burial or a painted stone all work. Some crematories offer a token vial with a certificate, though the contents may be mostly from the chamber. Ask what's inside before you pay, and choose whatever feels like your fish.
Where can I bury a fish if I live in an apartment in New Braunfels?
A large planter on a balcony or windowsill works well for a small fish. Wrap it in paper, bury it in fresh compost and plant something on top. Don't bury pets in public parks or communal gardens without permission. If you'd rather not bury at all, communal cremation through a vet is a simple option.
