Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Who to call first in Myrtle Beach when a fish dies
Myrtle Beach anchors the Grand Strand in Horry County, where resort towers line Ocean Boulevard and golf communities, condos and retiree neighborhoods spread inland toward the Intracoastal Waterway. A large share of residents relocated here in retirement, often leaving children and grandchildren behind. Summer traffic on US 17 and 501 can stretch a short trip into an hour, so ask any provider how quickly a collection can really happen in July.
Summer here drags on, hot and humid, and winters stay so mild that frost makes the news, which means cool weather almost never buys you time. Choose a tiled bathroom, set the thermostat low, and try to finish arrangements the same day. Through hurricane season a tropical storm can close causeways and knock out power, so save a second provider's number before you need it.
In a place the size of Myrtle Beach, the fish that dies is sometimes a shared one: the classroom goldfish, the tank in a dentist's waiting room or the koi in a church garden. A quick word to everyone who fed and watched it helps. A teacher can let pupils choose a burial spot in the school grounds, with the principal's agreement, while a staff member keeps the fish in a freezer at home until the group has decided what to do.
With roughly 40,937 residents, Myrtle Beach is the 11th-largest of the 29 South Carolina communities we cover.
Our pages for Conway (13 miles), North Myrtle Beach (13 miles) and Leland (60 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Myrtle Beach as well.

Cremation in South Carolina: a little context
About 56.1%[1] of people in South Carolina are cremated, a figure that has been climbing for years. Pet aftercare has followed a similar path, and fish are part of that shift. Where families once flushed or buried every fish without a second thought, more now ask whether a long-lived koi or goldfish can be cremated and its ashes kept. The answer is usually yes, as long as the fish is big enough to leave something.
For the South Carolina figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Myrtle Beach rather than as pet data.
Season by season: fish losses in Myrtle Beach
Outdoor goodbyes for a fish depend on the weather, but they don't have to happen straight away. Many families in Myrtle Beach keep a fish frozen, or keep a larger fish's ashes indoors, until a calm, dry day for a small ceremony by the pond or in the garden. Choose a day that suits the people who loved the fish.

Paying for a fish's goodbye in Myrtle Beach
Where a Myrtle Beach provider offers water cremation, ask for both of its versions. By our estimate, private aquamation runs about two and a half times the price of communal aquamation at the same provider[5]. The process uses roughly the water of 1–3 pet baths[6], according to the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance, which appeals to many people saying goodbye to a water animal. What comes back is a soft white powder instead of grey ash, and the national price bands appear in the table below.

What South Carolina allows for a pet fish
If you rent, your lease matters more than any law. Most tenancy agreements don't mention pet burials, but a landlord or homeowners' association can still object to a grave in a shared garden. A planter on your own balcony or patio avoids the question, as does cremation. Pond fish in a rented garden raise one more point: ask before draining or filling in a pond when you move out. The notes below cover what South Carolina allows.

From the first minute to the last goodbye
- If a sitter finds your fish dead while you're away, have them take it out carefully, wrap it in a paper towel and put it in the freezer in a labeled bag.
- Ask for a quick photo of the tank or pond plus a mention of anything odd, like a pump that's gone quiet or water turning cloudy.
- Have them check the others and, if the water doesn't look right, turn any automatic feeder off.
- Make no aftercare decisions from a distance. Once frozen, your fish can wait for your return.
- When you're back, run your own water test, and only then weigh up burial against cremation without any rush.
- Thank your sitter. Discovering a dead pet is hard on the person who finds it, whoever the fish belonged to.
Ways to mark the spot
Plenty of Grand Strand residents feel tied to the ocean, and a few families let a pinch of ash drift into the surf early on a calm morning, long before the beach umbrellas go up. Others would rather keep everything indoors in a coastal-blue urn, or bury a small box beside a palmetto. Get a written quote that spells out pickup, cremation type and when ashes will be returned.

Questions people ask
Why does the Myrtle Beach page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 56.1%[1] of South Carolina residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Myrtle Beach?
Usually yes. Conway is about 13 miles away, North Myrtle Beach is about 13 miles away and Leland is about 60 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is it illegal to release a pet fish in South Carolina?
Releasing non-native fish into lakes, rivers and ponds is restricted in many US states, and some make it illegal to release goldfish at all. Rules vary by state, so check with your state wildlife agency. Whatever the law, releasing a fish you can't keep harms native wildlife. Pet stores, fish clubs and rehoming groups can often take unwanted fish.
Is it okay to flush a dead fish?
It's better not to. Fish can carry parasites and bacteria that shouldn't reach rivers, and wastewater isn't always fully treated, especially during storms. Never flush a fish that might still be alive. Burying it in the garden or a planter, or freezing it until you arrange cremation, is kinder and safer, and children often find a small burial less upsetting than a flush.
How do I find someone who will cremate a fish near Myrtle Beach?
Start with your vet, who will know which crematory handles their small animals. Then call that crematory directly and ask whether it accepts fish. A local fish store or koi club may know who other keepers use. You can also send us your location and we'll email options that serve Myrtle Beach.
My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?
Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
