Fish aftercare in Conway, from koi to betta

Conway, South Carolina

What happens when a pet fish dies in Conway

Conway is the Horry County seat, an old river town on the Waccamaw about 15 miles inland from Myrtle Beach, known for moss-draped live oaks, a historic downtown and a boardwalk Riverwalk along the water. Coastal Carolina University sits just outside town, and housing runs from older homes by the courthouse to new subdivisions off US 501. Give exact directions and any access quirks when arranging pickup.

Many Conway families feel tied to the Waccamaw, and some pause along the Riverwalk boardwalk to say a few words after a loss. Others bury a small box under the oak out front, or keep ashes close in a cedar chest or a charm. Request written pricing that covers collection, the cremation type and a realistic return date for the ashes.

One advantage of a community the size of Conway is that people talk. Your vet, the feed store or the person who sold you your pond fish will usually know whether anyone locally takes fish for cremation and how they treat them. Ask directly what they'd do with their own fish. A straight answer from someone who knows the area is worth more than a glossy website.

Conway is home to about 30,627 people, the 19th-largest of the 29 South Carolina communities we cover.

Families in Conway often end up using a provider from Myrtle Beach (13 miles), North Myrtle Beach (20 miles) and Florence (49 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

How South Carolina thinks about cremation

Cremation accounts for about 56.1%[1] of deaths in South Carolina, so it's familiar but not the only tradition. That mix shows up in how local families say goodbye to fish. Some cremate a koi and keep the ashes by the pond; others bury a goldfish under a new plant and never think of cremation at all. Neither is more proper. Choose the goodbye that you'll feel good about in a year's time.

Timing a fish's aftercare in Conway's climate

If you keep pond fish, the seasons in Conway will shape both their risks and your goodbye. Hot spells can cause oxygen crashes; cold snaps can freeze the surface; storms can knock out a pump. Whatever caused a loss, check the water and the equipment first, then turn to aftercare once the remaining fish are safe.

Fish cremation prices for Conway families

In the US, almost every fish falls into the smallest weight band on a cremation price list. CareCredit's guide puts pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5]. That minimum exists because running the chamber costs much the same for a goldfish as for a small dog. Home collection, a decorative urn and a glass keepsake all add to the total, so ask any Conway provider for a written figure.

The full price table by size is on our South Carolina page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

What South Carolina allows for a pet fish

Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places. Often there's no licence written for them at all, and any inspection covers the equipment rather than how pets are handled. That puts the questions in your hands: ask in writing how a small body is labeled from drop-off to return and whether the cremation is truly individual. Rules on burial and scattering in South Carolina follow.

South Carolina keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Conway.

The South Carolina page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Conway's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

What to do when your fish dies in Conway

  1. If your child's fish dies while they're at school, either leave the fish in place or put it somewhere cold, then be honest with them once they're home.
  2. Skip the secret replacement. Children usually notice, and the truth is easier to handle than a discovery later.
  3. Let them see the fish if they want to, wrapped in a soft cloth, and answer questions in plain words.
  4. Offer two or three choices for the goodbye, such as a flowerpot on the windowsill, a spot in the garden or a small box to keep.
  5. Set a time for the goodbye, so they can make a card, pick a stone or choose words to say.
  6. Leave the tank empty for a while before talking about a new fish, unless your child asks sooner.

Keeping your fish part of the family story

Conway's summers drag on hot and damp, and winters stay mild enough that cold rarely buys time. A tiled room with the thermostat low is the right resting place, and plans should come together within hours. The Waccamaw flooded badly after Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and again after Florence in 2018, so if your street takes on water, tell the provider and line up a fallback.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Conway?

Usually yes. Myrtle Beach is about 13 miles away, North Myrtle Beach is about 20 miles away and Florence is about 49 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is cremation common in South Carolina?

For people, yes: about 56.1%[1] of South Carolina deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Conway follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Is it illegal to release a pet fish in South Carolina?

Releasing non-native fish into lakes, rivers and ponds is restricted in many US states, and some make it illegal to release goldfish at all. Rules vary by state, so check with your state wildlife agency. Whatever the law, releasing a fish you can't keep harms native wildlife. Pet stores, fish clubs and rehoming groups can often take unwanted fish.

Can a vet put my sick fish to sleep in Conway?

Yes. A vet with fish experience can end its suffering by adding an anesthetic overdose to its water, and the fish simply falls asleep. Vets advise against home methods such as freezing a live fish or flushing it. Transport it in its own water with a lid on, and raise aftercare during the same appointment, so the vet can arrange cremation or hand the body back to you for burial.

What should I do with the other fish after one dies?

Remove the dead fish quickly, then test the water for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature. Check the filter, pump and heater. If readings are off, do a partial water change and hold off feeding for a day. Watch the others closely for a week. If more fish look unwell, a vet who sees fish can examine a freshly chilled body.

Is it okay to flush a dead fish?

It's better not to. Fish can carry parasites and bacteria that shouldn't reach rivers, and wastewater isn't always fully treated, especially during storms. Never flush a fish that might still be alive. Burying it in the garden or a planter, or freezing it until you arrange cremation, is kinder and safer, and children often find a small burial less upsetting than a flush.
