The Finger Lakes winter is long here, with January lows near 15F and snow from November through March, while July tops out around 80F. The cold months make short-term care easier, since a chilly mudroom or enclosed porch can stand in for a refrigerator through the first night. How New York thinks about cremation
Roughly 55.7%[1] of funerals in New York end in cremation, so plenty of families mix both traditions, and couples sometimes disagree over a fish. One wants a grave by the pond; the other wants something to keep. A compromise works well: cremate the fish, keep a little of the ashes indoors and bury the rest beside a marginal plant near the water. Ashes carry no disease, so the pond stays safe, and you get both a keepsake and a place to visit.

When the weather sets the pace in Ithaca

The legal side of losing a fish in New York
Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for New York, set out below, are all you need.

Does the Ithaca climate change what I should do first?
