Los Lunas, New Mexico
Who will cremate a fish in Los Lunas?
Los Lunas summers bring July afternoons in the low 90s, yet winter nights get surprisingly cold for the desert, dipping to about 19F in January, with frost possible from November into March. When it's hot, rest the body on bare tile in a shaded room and have it picked up that same afternoon. Winter buys a little time, though decisions still shouldn't wait long.
Los Lunas is the Valencia County seat, a village on the Rio Grande about 22 miles south of Albuquerque. Older homes cluster along the river and its irrigation ditches, while newer subdivisions spread up the mesa to the west, and many households have bigger lots than in the city. Providers serving the Albuquerque area generally cover Los Lunas; offer landmarks if your road is unpaved.
Plenty of people around Los Lunas fish for sport, and some feel a little sheepish about grieving a pet fish. There's no contradiction. A goldfish or koi that lived with your family for years, came to the glass when you walked in and knew the sound of the feed tub was a companion, not a catch. It deserves the same thought you'd give any pet, whether that ends in a garden grave, a planter or a cremation near Albuquerque.
With roughly 20,572 residents, Los Lunas is the 9th-largest of the 11 New Mexico communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Los Lunas are based about 22 miles away in Albuquerque, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Albuquerque (22 miles, a larger centre), Rio Rancho (34 miles, a larger centre) and Santa Fe (78 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Los Lunas too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish
With about 70.5%[1] of people cremated, cremation is firmly part of local life in New Mexico. Families who keep ashes at home for a parent often feel the same about a long-lived pet, and a koi that has been in the family for twenty years is no exception. If you want your fish home in a small urn beside the pond or on a shelf, you'll find plenty of people here who understand exactly why.
The New Mexico percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Los Lunas, not as a count of pets.
When the weather sets the pace in Los Lunas
Los Lunas gets both extremes: highs around 93°F in July and lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December. Pond fish face oxygen crashes on hot, still summer nights and ice cover in winter. In summer, act fast: remove a dead fish quickly and get air moving. In winter, you have time, but frozen ground can rule out a garden burial until spring.
With hot summers and freezing winters, burial timing in Los Lunas can be awkward. Baked summer soil is hard to dig and frozen winter soil is impossible. Cremation sidesteps both, and for a large koi it gives you ashes you can scatter or bury whenever the ground allows. For a small fish, a big planter on the patio or balcony is a year-round alternative.

Fish cremation prices for Los Lunas families
Many Los Lunas families arrange a fish's cremation through their vet, which is convenient but not always the cheapest route. In a US survey, 48.8%[5] of pet owners named their veterinary team as their main source of advice on pet death. You can also call a crematory directly and compare. For a fish, the difference between two quotes is often a collection fee you don't need.

Local rules in New Mexico
Ashes from a fish are mostly bone mineral, and scattering them is rarely regulated on your own land. Tipping them into a pond that still holds fish can cloud the water, so many keepers scatter around the edge instead. Public lakes, rivers and parks are a different matter: the body that manages them can set its own rules. Here's what applies in New Mexico.
For New Mexico's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the New Mexico guide. Local rules in Los Lunas can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
From the first minute to the last goodbye
- Take a breath. With your fish out of the water, there's no decision that can't wait an hour.
- Wrap your fish in a damp paper towel or cloth, then seal and label the bag; nobody in your Los Lunas home wants a surprise in the freezer.
- Check on the survivors: aeration, filter, heater and a water test. If more than one fish looks unwell, call a vet who sees fish.
- Ask your vet or a local fish store to name crematories around Los Lunas that take fish.
- Choose private, communal or a burial, and ask for a written total before you agree.
- Drop your fish off in a cooler with ice packs, or arrange a pickup when a large koi is too heavy to lift and carry on your own.
- Plan a small goodbye, especially if children were involved: a drawing, a stone or a plant for the spot.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
The Rio Grande bosque, with its cottonwoods and riverside paths, runs along the eastern edge of Los Lunas, and many residents spend time there with their animals. Scattering in the bosque or along the river may need permission, so check first. Families with larger lots often set aside a corner of their property for a marker or for a portion of the ashes.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Los Lunas?
The closest communities we cover are Albuquerque (about 22 miles), Rio Rancho (about 34 miles) and Santa Fe (about 78 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Los Lunas too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do New Mexico attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the New Mexico human cremation rate at about 70.5%[1]. We show it on the Los Lunas page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Albuquerque to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Albuquerque (roughly 22 miles from Los Lunas) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Los Lunas?
January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 93°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Is there free support for grieving a pet in New Mexico?
Yes. Veterinary students trained by grief counselors answer the free Cornell Pet Loss Support Hotline, and Tufts University runs a free Pet Loss Support Helpline on weekday evenings. Both take calls from anywhere in the US. A long-lived koi or a child's first goldfish is a real loss, and they'll treat it as one.
How long can I keep a dead fish in the freezer?
Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.
