Saying goodbye to a pet fish in Clovis

Clovis, New Mexico

Who to call first in Clovis when a fish dies

Open sky, cropland and grassland, and the shallow playa lakes that fill after heavy rain surround Clovis, and the edge of town is where plenty of residents take their pets for open air. Scattering on private farmland needs the owner's permission. Military families expecting a move often keep the ashes in a sealed urn so their companion can travel with them to the next base.

July in Clovis brings highs in the low 90s, and from December to February nights freeze, often with a biting wind sweeping across the open plains. Spring can bring dust storms that turn the sky brown. In hot weather keep your pet indoors in the coolest room and have it collected, or take it to a provider, before evening, and ask where cremation takes place, as distances out here add up.

Plenty of people around Clovis fish for sport, and some feel a little sheepish about grieving a pet fish. There's no contradiction. A goldfish or koi that lived with your family for years, came to the glass when you walked in and knew the sound of the feed tub was a companion, not a catch. It deserves the same thought you'd give any pet, whether that ends in a garden grave, a planter or a cremation near Clovis.

With roughly 37,127 residents, Clovis is the 7th-largest of the 11 New Mexico communities we cover.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Plainview (86 miles), Amarillo (94 miles, a larger centre) and Lubbock (97 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Cremation, custom and the family fish in New Mexico

About 70.5%[1] of people in New Mexico are cremated, and pet cremation is correspondingly common. For fish keepers, the practical upshot is that you're unlikely to be the first person to ask a local crematory about a koi. Many will have a clear policy: fish over a certain size cremated privately with ashes returned, very small fish offered communal cremation or a symbolic return. Ask to hear that policy before you book.

For the New Mexico figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Clovis rather than as pet data.

Clovis weather, ponds and timing

In Clovis, the pond you might lose a fish from in July is the same one that ices over in January, February and December, and the right aftercare shifts with the season. A summer loss calls for speed: out of the water and into the freezer before the heat does its work. A winter loss calls for patience, because the fish can stay frozen until the ground opens up. Plan the goodbye around the season you're in, not around a deadline.

In a climate like Clovis's, the freezer is your friend all year. In summer it stops a dead fish breaking down; in winter it holds your fish until the ground thaws. Seal the fish in a bag with the air pressed out, wrap it in a towel and label it. You can then choose cremation or burial when the season and your own head allow.

Fish cremation prices for Clovis families

By our estimate, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal[5] across the markets we track, and for a fish that gap deserves a moment's thought. The extra pays for your own fish's ashes to come back to you. With a koi, that buys a few ounces for a small urn. With a neon tetra, it may buy very little. Ask any Clovis provider what they would return, then decide whether the difference is worth it. The cost calculator lays out both routes side by side.

Local rules in New Mexico

If you rent, your lease matters more than any law. Most tenancy agreements don't mention pet burials, but a landlord or homeowners' association can still object to a grave in a shared garden. A planter on your own balcony or patio avoids the question, as does cremation. Pond fish in a rented garden raise one more point: ask before draining or filling in a pond when you move out. The notes below cover what New Mexico allows.

The New Mexico page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Clovis's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

A checklist for Clovis fish keepers

  1. Remove the fish from the pond or tank promptly, and with no delay at all if it's warm out.
  2. Count your stock and look for a cause: a heron, a pump failure, a hot still night or a sudden water problem.
  3. Fix the water first: get more air into it, change part of the water if your test readings are wrong and skip feeding for a day.
  4. Freeze the fish you lost, bagging and sealing them individually if separate cremations are what you'd like.
  5. Decide whether you want ashes back. When you don't, a communal cremation or a burial at a good distance from the pond is a simple, kind choice.
  6. Ask for a written quote that lists collection, the cremation and the container.
  7. Mark the loss with a stone by the pond, a water plant or a note in your fish log.

Small memorials for a small life in Clovis

Clovis is the Curry County seat on the flat High Plains of eastern New Mexico, a few miles from the Texas line, with Cannon Air Force Base just to the west. A good number of households are military families on multi-year assignments, living in rentals or base housing where digging a grave simply isn't an option. For them, cremation, with ashes that can move to the next posting, is the practical route.

Questions people ask

Does the Clovis climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 93°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Clovis?

Usually yes. Plainview is about 86 miles away, Amarillo is about 94 miles away and Lubbock is about 97 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do New Mexico attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the New Mexico human cremation rate at about 70.5%[1]. We show it on the Clovis page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

How do I explain a fish's death to my child?

Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.

My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?

Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.

How much does fish cremation cost in Clovis?

Most fish fall in the smallest weight band. Nationally, CareCredit lists private cremation for pets up to 30 lb at about $100 to $175, and communal at $45 to $75. Collection, a decorative urn and glass keepsakes are extra. Ask any Clovis provider for a written total, and ask what they'd return before paying for a private cremation.
