Union City, Georgia
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Union City picture
Union City is a small south Fulton County city about 15 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta, strung along I-85 between College Park and Fairburn. Big distribution warehouses line the interstate, and residents mostly live in subdivisions of single-family homes, townhouse rows and garden-style apartment complexes. Crews based in the southern suburbs reach these streets quickly; just share the gate code, building letter and where a van can pull up.
Families in Union City tend to mark a pet's life in homey, everyday ways: an urn beside the television, a framed snapshot in the hallway, or a gardenia planted by the front steps. Renters and anyone expecting a move usually keep things indoors, where the memorial can come along. Homeowners sometimes add a flat stone beneath a shade tree, giving the household a place to pause on the way to the car.
If you live outside Union City itself, ask about mileage before booking any collection. For a fish, it usually makes more sense to drive it yourself, frozen and sealed inside a small cooler. You avoid a call-out fee, you choose the timing and you can ask your questions face to face. Many families combine the trip with something else they need to do in a larger town nearby.
Union City's population is around 29,910, the 42nd-largest of the 68 Georgia communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Atlanta, about 15 miles (24 km) away, which is where some providers serving Union City are based.
Our pages for South Fulton (3 miles, a larger centre), East Point (7 miles) and Fayetteville (11 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Union City as well.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish
About 54.2%[1] of people who die in Georgia are cremated, and the share has been rising steadily. Pet crematories have grown alongside it, and many now handle small and exotic pets as well as dogs and cats. If you're asking about a fish, you're likely to find at least one provider nearby that will take it. Whether you'll get meaningful ashes back depends on your fish's size, not on where you live.
For the Georgia figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Union City rather than as pet data.
Union City weather, ponds and timing
Heat waves in Union City catch out even experienced koi keepers. A pump failure during a July afternoon, a thunderstorm that stirs up the pond or an algae bloom crashing overnight can all strip oxygen from the water in hours. If several fish die at once, test the water before you do anything else, then chill the freshest body in the fridge in case a vet wants to examine it.
Hot weather also affects the goodbye itself. Garden soil in Union City can bake hard in July, so dig early in the morning, water the spot first and make the hole deep enough that the smell doesn't draw animals. If the ground is too hard, keep your fish frozen and wait for a cooler day. There's no deadline on a burial.

Budgeting for a koi or tank fish in Union City
Where a Union City provider offers water cremation, ask for both of its versions. By our estimate, private aquamation runs about two and a half times the price of communal aquamation at the same provider[5]. The process uses roughly the water of 1–3 pet baths[6], according to the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance, which appeals to many people saying goodbye to a water animal. What comes back is a soft white powder instead of grey ash, and the national price bands appear in the table below.

What Georgia allows for a pet fish
Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for Georgia, set out below, are all you need.
To find your county or city office in Georgia, start with the official Georgia local government directory.
For Georgia's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Georgia guide. Local rules in Union City can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Step by step, from tank to goodbye
- Make sure. Watch the gills and fins for a full minute. A fish lying still on the bottom can be chilled, stunned or very weak rather than gone.
- Lift your fish out with a net as soon as you're sure, so decay doesn't foul the water for the others.
- Seal it in a bag or tub, press the air out and freeze it. Chill it in the fridge instead if you want a vet to find out why it died.
- Test the water the same day. Check ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature, then keep a close eye on the fish that are left.
- Decide by size. Private cremation makes sense for a koi or big goldfish; a small tank fish is usually better buried, potted under a plant or cremated communally.
- Call a provider and ask what they'd return once they know how long and heavy it is, then have the total put in writing.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Union City has no month that reliably freezes, and July afternoons reach about 90 degrees, so in most seasons a body will not stay cool on its own. If your cat, ferret or parakeet dies at home, pick a room facing away from the sun, spread an old sheet under them and surround them with frozen water bottles wrapped in hand towels. Then phone for collection without much delay.

Questions people ask
How do Georgia attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Georgia human cremation rate at about 54.2%[1]. We show it on the Union City page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Where are the providers that serve Union City actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Atlanta, about 15 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Union City and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Union City?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 90°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Union City?
The closest communities we cover are South Fulton (about 3 miles), East Point (about 7 miles) and Fayetteville (about 11 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Union City too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How long will it take to get my fish's ashes back in Union City?
Many families receive private cremation ashes in about one to two weeks. In a smaller town, where the cremation happens in a larger city such as Atlanta, it may take a little longer, especially if your vet has a weekly collection. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
How much does fish cremation cost in Union City?
Most fish fall in the smallest weight band. Nationally, CareCredit lists private cremation for pets up to 30 lb at about $100 to $175, and communal at $45 to $75. Collection, a decorative urn and glass keepsakes are extra. Ask any Union City provider for a written total, and ask what they'd return before paying for a private cremation.
