Panama City, Florida
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Panama City picture
Life in Panama City revolves around the water, from the St. Andrews neighborhood marina to the bayous that cut into town. Some families scatter a portion of ashes on the bay or along a quiet shoreline, where rules allow, and keep the rest at home. Others choose a garden plant or a small stone under a live oak. Rebuilding after the 2018 storm has made many residents value a keepsake they can carry if they ever need to leave.
Panama City is the Bay County seat, set on St. Andrew Bay in the Florida Panhandle, and it runs on Central Time, unlike most of the state. It is a fair distance from any big metro, with Tallahassee roughly two hours east, so pet aftercare here is usually arranged through providers based in Bay County or who cover the Panhandle. Ask where the cremation itself takes place and how long the ashes will take to come back.
For a child in Panama City, a goldfish won at a county fair or a betta from the pet aisle is often their first pet. When it dies, a small ceremony in the garden with a painted stone can mean more than any cremation. If your child wants to keep something, some crematories return a token vial and certificate even for a very small fish, but ask what's inside before you pay for it.
Panama City is home to about 37,806 people, the 81st-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Destin (52 miles), Fort Walton Beach (60 miles) and Dothan (75 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Panama City routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Cremation habits in Florida, and what they mean for a fish
Urns and keepsakes are easy to buy in Florida, where cremation is the choice for about 72.5%[1] of people, but most are sized for a cat or a dog, and a fish's ashes can look lost inside them. Look for a keepsake urn of a few cubic inches, a glass heart or a small wooden box. The urn size calculator helps if you're unsure. For a large koi, one small urn indoors and a pinch saved for the garden often works well.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Panama City tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Heat, ice and your pond in Panama City
Outdoor goodbyes for a fish depend on the weather, but they don't have to happen straight away. Many families in Panama City keep a fish frozen, or keep a larger fish's ashes indoors, until a calm, dry day for a small ceremony by the pond or in the garden. Choose a day that suits the people who loved the fish.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
Where a Panama City provider offers water cremation, ask for both of its versions. By our estimate, private aquamation runs about two and a half times the price of communal aquamation at the same provider[5]. The process uses roughly the water of 1–3 pet baths[6], according to the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance, which appeals to many people saying goodbye to a water animal. What comes back is a soft white powder instead of grey ash, and the national price bands appear in the table below.

What Florida allows for a pet fish
A fish is small, but the rules around water are not. Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, and don't flush a fish, dead or alive. Invasive fish released by owners are a real problem in many regions. For burial and scattering, the rules for Florida are summarised below, and your city or council may add its own.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Panama City may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A checklist for Panama City fish keepers
- If your child's fish dies while they're at school, leave it where it is or chill it, and tell them honestly when they get home.
- Skip the secret replacement. Children usually notice, and the truth is easier to handle than a discovery later.
- Let them see the fish if they want to, wrapped in a soft cloth, and answer questions in plain words.
- Offer two or three choices for how to say goodbye: a windowsill flowerpot, a place in the garden or a little box they can hold on to.
- Set a time for the goodbye, giving them a chance to write a card, find a stone or think of words.
- Leave the tank empty for a while and hold off on new-fish talk unless your child brings it up first.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Panama City summers are long, humid and hot, but the Panhandle does get occasional winter frosts, which surprises people who have moved from further south. In the warm months, keep a pet who has died somewhere cool, on a towel with ice packs nearby, and aim for collection the same day. Hurricane season matters here too: after Hurricane Michael in 2018, many families learned how quickly roads and services can shut down.

Questions people ask
Why does the Panama City page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Panama City?
Usually yes. Destin is about 52 miles away, Fort Walton Beach is about 60 miles away and Dothan is about 75 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What should I do with the other fish after one dies?
Remove the dead fish quickly, then test the water for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature. Check the filter, pump and heater. If readings are off, do a partial water change and hold off feeding for a day. Watch the others closely for a week. If more fish look unwell, a vet who sees fish can examine a freshly chilled body.
What can I keep if my fish was too small to leave ashes?
Plenty. A framed photo, a painting or print of the fish, its favorite tank ornament, a plant grown over a garden burial or a painted stone all work. Some crematories offer a token vial with a certificate, though the contents may be mostly from the chamber. Ask what's inside before you pay, and choose whatever feels like your fish.
How long will it take to get my fish's ashes back in Panama City?
Many families receive private cremation ashes in about one to two weeks. In a smaller town, where the cremation happens in a larger city such as Panama City, it may take a little longer, especially if your vet has a weekly collection. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
How do I find someone who will cremate a fish near Panama City?
Start with your vet, who will know which crematory handles their small animals. Then call that crematory directly and ask whether it accepts fish. A local fish store or koi club may know who other keepers use. You can also send us your location and we'll email options that serve Panama City.
