Clearwater, Florida
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Clearwater picture
The 2024 hurricanes pushed storm surge through Clearwater Beach and low-lying neighborhoods, and plenty of residents are still rebuilding or have moved inland. A backyard grave on sandy soil with shallow groundwater is a poor fit here, and flood risk makes it riskier still. Private cremation with the remains returned travels with you. A shared cremation, where no ashes come back, is the cheaper path. Request a written total that includes collection.
Frost almost never reaches Clearwater; January nights average in the low 50s and August afternoons approach 91F with sticky Gulf air. Warmth, not cold, is what to manage once a pet has died. Turn the thermostat down, rest your companion on a blanket away from sunny windows, and aim to have them collected by the following morning. During hurricane watches, arrange things before bridges close.
For families in Clearwater with a pond full of fish, one loss often raises a practical question about the others: is this the start of something? If two or more fish die close together, chill rather than freeze the freshest one and ask your vet about an aquatic specialist. Some vets in larger cities such as St. Petersburg work with fish. Knowing the cause protects the pond and can ease any guilt you're carrying.
With roughly 114,364 residents, Clearwater is the 20th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is St. Petersburg, about 17 miles (27 km) away, which is where some providers serving Clearwater are based.
Our pages for Largo (4 miles), Dunedin (5 miles) and Seminole (9 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Clearwater as well.

Local attitudes to cremation
Urns and keepsakes are easy to buy in Florida, where cremation is the choice for about 72.5%[1] of people, but most are sized for a cat or a dog, and a fish's ashes can look lost inside them. Look for a keepsake urn of a few cubic inches, a glass heart or a small wooden box. The urn size calculator helps if you're unsure. For a large koi, one small urn indoors and a pinch saved for the garden often works well.
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Timing a fish's aftercare in Clearwater's climate
Hot weather also affects the goodbye itself. Garden soil in Clearwater can bake hard in August, so dig early in the morning, water the spot first and make the hole deep enough that the smell doesn't draw animals. If the ground is too hard, keep your fish frozen and wait for a cooler day. There's no deadline on a burial.
Clearwater summers are hot, with August averaging highs around 91°F. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water, so pond fish are most at risk on hot, still nights, and losses are often found at dawn when oxygen is lowest. If you find a fish gasping at the surface, get an air pump or fountain running before anything else. Then lift out any fish that have died and put them straight in the freezer.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
In the US, almost every fish falls into the smallest weight band on a cremation price list. CareCredit's guide puts pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5]. That minimum exists because running the chamber costs much the same for a goldfish as for a small dog. Home collection, a decorative urn and a glass keepsake all add to the total, so ask any Clearwater provider for a written figure.

Local rules in Florida
If you rent, your lease matters more than any law. Most tenancy agreements don't mention pet burials, but a landlord or homeowners' association can still object to a grave in a shared garden. A planter on your own balcony or patio avoids the question, as does cremation. Pond fish in a rented garden raise one more point: ask before draining or filling in a pond when you move out. The notes below cover what Florida allows.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Clearwater.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Clearwater may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
The first day after a fish dies
- Make sure. Watch the gills and fins for a full minute. A fish lying still on the bottom can be chilled, stunned or very weak rather than gone.
- Lift your fish out with a net once you're certain; left in the tank, it will start to spoil the water for the rest.
- Seal it in a bag or tub, press the air out and freeze it. Chill it in the fridge instead if you want a vet to find out why it died.
- Test the water the same day for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature, and watch the remaining fish closely.
- Decide by size. A koi or large goldfish suits private cremation; a small tank fish often suits a burial, a planter or communal cremation.
- Call a provider and ask what they'd return once they know how long and heavy it is, then have the total put in writing.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Clearwater sits on the Gulf side of the Pinellas peninsula, the most densely populated county in Florida, with Clearwater Beach and Sand Key on barrier islands reached by the Memorial Causeway. Inland, the city is a patchwork of 1950s ranch houses, condo complexes, mobile home parks and newer neighborhoods around Countryside. St. Petersburg lies about seventeen miles south. Tell whoever collects your pet which side of the causeway you are on.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Clearwater follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does the Clearwater climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Where are the providers that serve Clearwater actually based?
Some are local, and some run from St. Petersburg, about 17 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Clearwater and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Clearwater?
Usually yes. Largo is about 4 miles away, Dunedin is about 5 miles away and Seminole is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can you actually cremate a fish in Clearwater?
Yes. Many pet crematories that handle small animals will cremate a fish, and a koi or large goldfish is cremated much like any small pet. The limit is size: a betta, guppy or tetra may leave no ash that can be separated and returned. Call first, give the length and rough weight, and ask what they'd expect to give back.
Does Florida regulate pet crematories?
Only nine US states have laws written specifically for pet crematories, and only two require written documentation for consumers. Elsewhere, it's up to you to ask. For a fish, ask in writing whether the cremation is private, communal or partitioned, how your fish is identified and what will be returned for its size.
