Middletown, Delaware
Who will cremate a fish in Middletown?
Many Middletown homes sit under homeowners' association rules that may limit what can be buried in a yard, and water tables can be high on former farmland. Private cremation, with ashes returned to your family, sidesteps both questions. Communal cremation, where nothing comes back, costs less. Providers from New Castle County and upper Kent County serve the town. Ask for total costs, including pickup, in writing.
Summers here are hot and humid, peaking near 87F in July, while frost typically covers January and February and sometimes December. Newer homes in Middletown often have central air, which makes it easier to keep a pet's body cool indoors for a day in summer. In winter, an attached garage works well. There is no need to decide within the first hour.
In a town the size of Middletown, many families simply bury a small fish in the garden, and there's nothing wrong with that. Cremation tends to come up for larger or older fish: a koi that has been in the family for years, a big goldfish that outgrew three tanks, or a fish that belonged to someone who has since passed on. For those, the drive to a crematory near Philadelphia can be worth it.
With roughly 25,798 residents, Middletown is the 4th-largest of the 11 Delaware communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Philadelphia, about 46 miles (74 km) away, which is where some providers serving Middletown are based.
The closest communities we cover are Smyrna (12 miles), Newark (17 miles) and Elsmere (21 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Middletown too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Cremation in Delaware: a little context
In Delaware, about 59.7%[1] of people are cremated. That middle ground means most people are comfortable with cremation without it being automatic. For a fish, that's a helpful place to be: nobody expects a particular choice, and providers are used to hearing different requests. Decide by size. Larger koi and goldfish suit cremation; the smallest fish often suit a burial, a planter or a communal cremation.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Delaware figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Middletown tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Middletown weather, ponds and timing
Spring clean-outs are when many Middletown pond owners find out how winter went. If you lose fish as the water warms, test it straight away: rotting leaves and a winter's worth of waste can spike ammonia just as fish start feeding again. Freeze any fish you lose until the water is stable, then decide on cremation or a burial in the newly thawed ground.
If you find a fish frozen into the ice in Middletown, don't hammer the surface to get it out; many keepers avoid that because the shock can stress the fish still living below. Pour hot water on a spot or let a de-icer open a hole, and lift the fish out once it's free. If a fish is stuck deep in thick ice, it may be kinder to the others to wait for a thaw.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
Expect to pay the provider's small-pet minimum for your fish in Middletown. PetMD says US communal cremation starts from about $50[5], and Embrace Pet Insurance gives wider national ranges for private cremation and aquamation, shown below. Before you pay for a private cremation, ask how much ash the provider expects to return. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], and a fish can come in at the low end of that.

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Delaware
If you rent, your lease matters more than any law. Most tenancy agreements don't mention pet burials, but a landlord or homeowners' association can still object to a grave in a shared garden. A planter on your own balcony or patio avoids the question, as does cremation. Pond fish in a rented garden raise one more point: ask before draining or filling in a pond when you move out. The notes below cover what Delaware allows.
The official Delaware local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Middletown.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Delaware level first; our Delaware rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Middletown or your HOA adds anything.
The first day after a fish dies
- Net your fish out gently and lay it on a soft cloth, giving yourself a moment.
- Freeze it the same day, wrapped and sealed in a bag. Once frozen, a fish will keep for weeks, and there's no more rush.
- Work out its size: measure from nose to the fork of the tail and note the rough weight. Providers will ask.
- Tell the family, children included, plainly and truthfully. Slipping in a lookalike rarely ends well.
- Compare two options, for example a private cremation with a small urn and a garden burial under a new plant.
- Book your choice and find out how they keep track of your fish from hand-over to the day it comes back.
Ways to mark the spot
Middletown, south of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, has grown from a small crossroads farm town into one of Delaware's fastest-growing places, with new subdivisions spread across former fields along Route 1 and Route 301. Many families are new arrivals commuting to Wilmington or beyond. When arranging collection, give your development name and street carefully, because navigation apps can struggle with the newest roads.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Middletown actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Philadelphia, about 46 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Middletown and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Middletown?
Usually yes. Smyrna is about 12 miles away, Newark is about 17 miles away and Elsmere is about 21 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Middletown climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 87°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Why does the Middletown page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 59.7%[1] of Delaware residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What can I keep if my fish was too small to leave ashes?
Plenty. A framed photo, a painting or print of the fish, its favorite tank ornament, a plant grown over a garden burial or a painted stone all work. Some crematories offer a token vial with a certificate, though the contents may be mostly from the chamber. Ask what's inside before you pay, and choose whatever feels like your fish.
How much does fish cremation cost in Middletown?
Most fish fall in the smallest weight band. Nationally, CareCredit lists private cremation for pets up to 30 lb at about $100 to $175, and communal at $45 to $75. Collection, a decorative urn and glass keepsakes are extra. Ask any Middletown provider for a written total, and ask what they'd return before paying for a private cremation.
