When a fish you love dies in Dover

Dover, Delaware

Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Dover picture

Dover, Delaware's capital and the Kent County seat, is a mid-sized city surrounded by flat farmland, with Dover Air Force Base on its southeast edge and Delaware State University to the north. Housing runs from older homes near The Green to newer subdivisions off Route 13 and Route 1. Share your neighborhood and whether base or gated access applies, so pickup can be arranged without delay.

Military families stationed at Dover often move every few years, and burying a companion in a yard they will leave can feel wrong. An individual cremation, with remains handed back, lets your pet travel to the next assignment with you. When nothing needs to be returned, communal cremation is the less costly route. Ask providers to spell out every fee, including travel onto base if relevant.

Families near Dover sometimes lose several pond fish at once after a storm, a power cut to the pump or a hot, still night. It's upsetting to find, and the first job is the survivors: remove the dead fish, get air moving in the water and test it. Once that's done, you can freeze the fish you lost and decide calmly whether they'll be buried together, cremated communally or cremated individually.

Dover is home to about 40,592 people, the 2nd-largest of the 11 Delaware communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Dover are based about 58 miles away in Philadelphia, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

For a second opinion on price, Smyrna (10 miles), Milford (18 miles) and Middletown (22 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Dover routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

About 10 million US households keep freshwater fish.

13%[3]

13% of UK households keep an indoor fish tank.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

How Delaware thinks about cremation

Cremation accounts for about 59.7%[1] of deaths in Delaware, so it's familiar but not the only tradition. That mix shows up in how local families say goodbye to fish. Some cremate a koi and keep the ashes by the pond; others bury a goldfish under a new plant and never think of cremation at all. Neither is more proper. Choose the goodbye that you'll feel good about in a year's time.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Delaware figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Dover tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Dover weather, ponds and timing

Mild winters in Dover mean parasites and bacteria never fully rest, and neither do the fish. Keepers here often see losses spread across the year rather than bunched into one season. When a fish is lost for no clear reason, think back over any new arrivals from the past month, test the water and look closely at the survivors' fins and gills. A run of losses is worth a vet's time; a single elderly fish usually isn't a mystery.

Mild weather in Dover makes outdoor goodbyes easy most of the year. Some families bury a small fish under a new water plant or a pot of flowers within a day or two; others keep the fish frozen and wait for a weekend when the whole family can be there. Both are fine, and there's no season to wait for.

What fish cremation costs in Dover

Expect to pay the provider's small-pet minimum for your fish in Dover. PetMD says US communal cremation starts from about $50[5], and Embrace Pet Insurance gives wider national ranges for private cremation and aquamation, shown below. Before you pay for a private cremation, ask how much ash the provider expects to return. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], and a fish can come in at the low end of that.

The Delaware price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

The legal side of losing a fish in Delaware

A fish is small, but the rules around water are not. Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, and don't flush a fish, dead or alive. Invasive fish released by owners are a real problem in many regions. For burial and scattering, the rules for Delaware are summarised below, and your city or council may add its own.

We keep Delaware's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Delaware rules summary. Before a home burial in Dover, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.

What to do when your fish dies in Dover

  1. If your child's fish dies while they're at school, leave it where it is or chill it, and tell them honestly when they get home.
  2. Skip the secret replacement. Children usually notice, and the truth is easier to handle than a discovery later.
  3. Let them see the fish if they want to, wrapped in a soft cloth, and answer questions in plain words.
  4. Offer two or three choices for the goodbye, such as a flowerpot on the windowsill, a spot in the garden or a small box to keep.
  5. Set a time for the goodbye, so they can make a card, pick a stone or choose words to say.
  6. Leave the tank empty for a while before talking about a new fish, unless your child asks sooner.

Keeping a fish's memory close

Central Delaware summers are sticky, with July highs in the upper 80s, and winters are fairly mild, frost mostly confined to January and February. Late-summer tropical remnants and autumn nor'easters can knock out power, so choose a cool interior spot that does not depend on electricity if storms are forecast. In calmer weather, an air-conditioned room is fine for a day while you decide.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Delaware?

For people, yes: about 59.7%[1] of Delaware deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Dover follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dover?

Usually yes. Smyrna is about 10 miles away, Milford is about 18 miles away and Middletown is about 22 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will I have to travel to Philadelphia to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Philadelphia (roughly 58 miles from Dover) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Does the Dover climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 87°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January and February, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

How do I explain a fish's death to my child?

Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.

How long can I keep a dead fish in the freezer?

Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.
