Brighton, England
Who to call first in Brighton when a fish dies
Brighton and Hove is a city of Regency terraces, converted flats, narrow Victorian streets and steep hills running up from the seafront, and parking is notoriously tight. If you'd like your pet collected from home, mention the floor, the stairs, whether there's a lift and where a vehicle can realistically stop. Many residents don't drive, so home collection is often the most practical option here.
Many Brighton families feel drawn to the South Downs when they think of remembering a pet: the open chalk hills at Devil's Dyke, the woods above Stanmer Park, or the long view back over the sea. Scattering ashes on National Park land or a beach is often done quietly, but it's courteous to check with the landowner first. Keeping ashes at home avoids any doubt.
Local fish stores in Brighton are often an overlooked source of help. Staff see fish die every week and many know which vets and crematories will take a customer's fish. Some stores will also test a water sample for you, which is worth doing the same day a fish dies without an obvious reason. Take a clean jar of tank or pond water with you and ask for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH readings.
With roughly 290,000 residents, Brighton is the 12th-largest of the 33 England communities we cover. London, roughly 47 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Brighton run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Guildford (34 miles), Portsmouth (42 miles) and Richmond (45 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Brighton too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
290,000 ÷ 2.4 = 120,833 households; × 13% (fish) = 15,500. A household with several pets counts once.
13%[1]
13% of UK households keep an indoor fish tank.
83.0%[2]
In 2024, 83.0% of deaths in England & Wales ended in cremation.
10 million[3]
About 10 million US households keep freshwater fish.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Local attitudes to cremation
Cremation is the norm in England, where about 83.0%[2] of people are cremated. That doesn't make it the right choice for every fish. A tiny tank fish may leave nothing you could collect, and many families here pair a communal cremation or a garden burial with a memorial that needs no ash at all: a photo print, a plant or a favorite ornament from the tank. What matters is that the goodbye fits the fish.
The England figure comes from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Season by season: fish losses in Brighton
Outdoor goodbyes for a fish depend on the weather, but they don't have to happen straight away. Many families in Brighton keep a fish frozen, or keep a larger fish's ashes indoors, until a calm, dry day for a small ceremony by the pond or in the garden. Choose a day that suits the people who loved the fish.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
Most UK owners, 67%[5], have their pet cremated, and that can include a much-loved fish. In Brighton, your vet will normally have an arrangement with one crematorium, but you're free to contact another directly. For a fish, ask for their smallest-pet individual price, their communal price and whether a very small fish can have its ashes returned at all.

The legal side of losing a fish in England
Rules about pets after death are set locally, and fish are usually covered by the same rules as other small pets. Garden burial is often allowed on land you own, with limits near wells and water. Scattering ashes directly into lakes and rivers may need permission. Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places, and some ban releasing goldfish outright.
The UK is a nation of pond keepers: 11%[7] of households have an outdoor pond with fish. In England you need permission to put fish into rivers, lakes and many ponds connected to them, so never release unwanted fish. Following the CMA's review, it's reasonable to ask any vet or pet crematorium for a written small-pet price list, and to ask what they'd return for a fish.
The rules that apply across England (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our England page. Brighton may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
From the first minute to the last goodbye
- Make sure. Watch the gills and fins for a full minute. A fish lying still on the bottom can be chilled, stunned or very weak rather than gone.
- Lift your fish out with a net once you're certain; left in the tank, it will start to spoil the water for the rest.
- Seal it in a bag or tub, press the air out and freeze it. Chill it in the fridge instead if you want a vet to find out why it died.
- Test the water the same day. Check ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature, then keep a close eye on the fish that are left.
- Decide by size. A koi or large goldfish suits private cremation; a small tank fish often suits a burial, a planter or communal cremation.
- Call a provider and ask what they'd return for your fish's length and weight, and get the total in writing.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Brighton's seaside climate is mild, breezy and often damp, with few very hot days and winters that rarely stay frozen for long. That gives you a little more time than in hotter places, but a pet's body should still be wrapped and kept in the coolest room, and collection arranged within a day or two. On a warm summer day, add ice packs near the body.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Brighton?
The closest communities we cover are Guildford (about 34 miles), Portsmouth (about 42 miles) and Richmond (about 45 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Brighton too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to London to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in London (roughly 47 miles from Brighton) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Brighton page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) reports about 83.0%[2] of England residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I bury a fish in my garden in England?
Generally yes, for a pet fish on land you own, provided you keep it away from wells, streams and drains and bury it deep enough that foxes can't dig it up. If you rent, ask your landlord. A large planter with a new plant is a good alternative, and it can move house with you.
My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?
Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
How do I explain a fish's death to my child?
Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.
