Koi and aquarium fish cremation in Portsmouth

Portsmouth, England

What happens when a pet fish dies in Portsmouth

Portsmouth is one of the most densely populated places in the UK, packed onto Portsea Island with row after row of Victorian terraces and tight on-street parking. If your pet dies at home, collection may be simpler than carrying your pet to a car parked streets away. When you ask for options, mention your area, whether you're on an upper floor and what parking is like outside.

Many Portsmouth families connect a pet with the seafront at Southsea, the common or the green spaces around the harbour. That often shapes what they choose. A private cremation returns ashes, which you can keep at home or scatter later with the landowner's permission. A communal cremation costs less and returns no ashes, and is a kind choice if a keepsake isn't something you need.

Garden burial is still the most common goodbye for small fish in a city like Portsmouth, and it's a good one. Pick a spot well away from the pond, any vegetable beds and your neighbor's fence line, and deep enough that curious pets won't disturb it. Wrap the fish in paper or cotton, not plastic. If you rent, a large planter with a new plant works just as well and can move house with you.

About 238,000 people live in Portsmouth, which makes it the 16th-largest of the 33 England communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Portsmouth are based about 15 miles away in Southampton, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Portsmouth sits within easy reach of Southampton (15 miles), Winchester (19 miles) and Guildford (37 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Portsmouth; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Our estimate

13,000

How many fish-owning households Portsmouth has (estimate)

How we calculated this

238,000 ÷ 2.4 = 99,167 households; × 13% (fish) = 13,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

13%[1]

13% of UK households keep an indoor fish tank.

83.0%[2]

In 2024, 83.0% of deaths in England & Wales ended in cremation.

10 million[3]

About 10 million US households keep freshwater fish.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is Embrace Pet Insurance and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026; we only apply it to this.

Cremation habits in England, and what they mean for a fish

With cremation chosen for roughly 83.0%[2] of deaths in England, many families have already arranged one for a relative and know the questions to ask. They apply to a fish on a smaller scale. How is my fish tracked at every stage? Is it cremated alone, or alongside other pets with a divider between them? When do the ashes come back, and in what? A provider that answers all three without fuss is usually a safe choice.

The England percentage above is from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Portsmouth, not as a count of pets.

What the seasons mean for fish in Portsmouth

Weather affects the people as well as the pond. In Portsmouth, holiday weeks, storms and heavy snow can all slow a vet's collection run or a crematory's schedule. If a fish dies just before a long weekend, don't count on anyone picking up the phone; freeze it and call on the next working day. A frozen fish loses nothing by waiting, and you avoid paying extra for an urgent service you don't need.

Paying for a fish's goodbye in Portsmouth

UK prices are unusually well documented thanks to the Competition and Markets Authority's recent review. Prices run from about £50 for a communal cremation of a small pet to over £300 for an individual cremation of a large one[5], and a fish will always sit at the small-pet end. Communal cremation is two to five times cheaper[6] than individual cremation for the same weight, so for a small tank fish it's often the sensible choice. Ask for a written price list; UK vets are now expected to share one.

For a line-by-line price table, see the England overview; for what's included in each option, see our services.

Local rules in England

Rules about pets after death are set locally, and fish are usually covered by the same rules as other small pets. Garden burial is often allowed on land you own, with limits near wells and water. Scattering ashes directly into lakes and rivers may need permission. Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places, and some ban releasing goldfish outright.

The UK is a nation of pond keepers: 11%[8] of households have an outdoor pond with fish. In England you need permission to put fish into rivers, lakes and many ponds connected to them, so never release unwanted fish. Following the CMA's review, it's reasonable to ask any vet or pet crematorium for a written small-pet price list, and to ask what they'd return for a fish.

The England page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Portsmouth's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

A checklist for Portsmouth fish keepers

  1. Book an aquatic vet if an old or sick fish is clearly suffering. A gentle overdose of anesthetic lets it drift off without distress.
  2. Settle the aftercare question when you book, so you know whether the vet will send your fish to a crematory or hand it back to you.
  3. Carry it in a tub of water from its own tank or pond, keep the lid on, and add a battery-powered air pump for a longer trip.
  4. Decide whether you want to stay. Being present feels right to many people, but saying your goodbye at home beforehand is just as valid.
  5. Choose private cremation, communal cremation or a home burial and have the full price written down before you head home.
  6. Watch the remaining fish over the next week, especially if the one you lost had an infection.

Keeping your fish part of the family story

Portsmouth's coastal climate is milder than inland Hampshire, with sea breezes, fairly gentle winters and summers that can still turn warm. If your pet dies at home, keep the body cool: wrap your pet in a towel, place ice packs or frozen bottles nearby and use the coolest room in the house. In warm weather, arranging collection within a day is sensible.

Questions people ask

How do England attitudes to cremation compare?

Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) puts the England human cremation rate at about 83.0%[2]. We show it on the Portsmouth page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Portsmouth?

Usually yes. Southampton is about 15 miles away, Winchester is about 19 miles away and Guildford is about 37 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Where are the providers that serve Portsmouth actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Southampton, about 15 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Portsmouth and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

How do I find someone who will cremate a fish near Portsmouth?

Start with your vet, who will know which crematory handles their small animals. Then call that crematory directly and ask whether it accepts fish. A local fish store or koi club may know who other keepers use. You can also send us your location and we'll email options that serve Portsmouth.

How much ash does a fish leave after cremation?

Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, and fish tend toward the low end because they're mostly water with fine bones. A large koi might return a few ounces, enough for a small urn. A pond goldfish may leave a keepsake vial's worth. A small tank fish may leave nothing you could collect separately.

How much does fish cremation cost in the UK?

UK pet cremation runs from about £50 for communal cremation of a small pet to over £300 for an individual cremation of a large one, and a fish sits at the small end. Communal is typically two to five times cheaper than individual for the same weight. Ask your vet and an independent crematorium for their smallest-pet prices.
