About 50.11%[1] of people who die in Spain are cremated, and the share has been rising steadily. Pet crematories have grown alongside it, and many now handle small and exotic pets as well as dogs and cats. If you're asking about a fish, you're likely to find at least one provider nearby that will take it. Whether you'll get meaningful ashes back depends on your fish's size, not on where you live.

What Basque Country allows for a pet fish
Fish aftercare touches fewer rules than a dog or horse, but a few are worth knowing. Burying on rented land needs the owner's agreement. Scattering ashes into open water can need permission from whoever manages it. And releasing live fish, or pouring out a pond, is illegal in many places because of invasive species. Step by step, from tank to goodbye
- If a sitter finds your fish dead while you're away, have them take it out carefully, wrap it in a paper towel and put it in the freezer in a labeled bag.
- Ask for a quick photo of the tank or pond plus a mention of anything odd, like a pump that's gone quiet or water turning cloudy.
- Have them check the others and, if the water doesn't look right, turn any automatic feeder off.
- Make no aftercare decisions from a distance. Once frozen, your fish can wait for your return.
- When you're back, test the water yourself, then choose between burial and cremation calmly.
- Thank your sitter. Finding a dead pet is upsetting for them too, even when it's someone else's fish.
Memorials that suit a fish
Bilbao's climate is mild and wet, with rain in every season and humid summers that rarely get extremely hot. Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bilbao?

Can I bury a pet fish in my garden in Spain?
In many European countries you can bury a small pet on your own land, with conditions. Some countries rule out pet burials in water-protection areas, so ask your local authority if you live near a spring, well or reservoir. Keep well away from wells and streams, wrap the fish in paper or cotton and check local rules if you rent.
Can two fish be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tank mates or a pair of koi that always swam together are sometimes cremated side by side, and many families find that comforting. Tell the provider clearly, because a private cremation normally means one animal. If you'd rather keep each fish's ashes separate, bag and label them individually before freezing and ask whether separate cremations cost more.
