Fish cremation in Amsterdam

Amsterdam, North Holland

Getting help with a fish loss around Amsterdam

Amsterdam's maritime climate is mild and damp, with cool summers, grey winters and frequent wind and rain. That gives you a little time if your pet dies at home, but keep the body in a cool room on a blanket and away from radiators. During summer heat waves, which the Netherlands now sees more often, arrange cremation within a day and ask about cool storage if a weekend gets in the way.

Amsterdam families spend time in the Vondelpark, the Amsterdamse Bos and along the IJ, but most pets in the city live in apartments and on houseboats, and many owners want the ashes back to keep at home. Individual cremation, where your pet is cremated alone and the ashes returned, is widely offered in the Netherlands. Ask for that in writing, since a collective cremation returns no ashes.

Around Amsterdam, plenty of suburban homes have garden ponds, and pond losses are different from tank losses. A heron, a raccoon or a sudden oxygen drop can take several fish at once. If that happens, lift out every fish that has died, count them against your stock and check the survivors closely before thinking about aftercare. Several fish can often be cremated together communally, or individually if you want each one's ashes kept apart.

Amsterdam is home to about 872,000 people, the largest of the 2 North Holland communities we cover.

Our pages for Haarlem (11 miles), Utrecht (21 miles) and The Hague (33 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Amsterdam as well.

68.37%[1]

In 2023, 68.37% of deaths in the Netherlands were cremated (108 crematoria).

10 million[2]

About 10 million US households keep freshwater fish.

13%[3]

13% of UK households keep an indoor fish tank.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What local funeral customs suggest for a pet fish

In Netherlands, about 68.37%[1] of people are cremated. That middle ground means most people are comfortable with cremation without it being automatic. For a fish, that's a helpful place to be: nobody expects a particular choice, and providers are used to hearing different requests. Decide by size. Larger koi and goldfish suit cremation; the smallest fish often suit a burial, a planter or a communal cremation.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Netherlands figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Amsterdam tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Amsterdam weather, ponds and timing

Outdoor goodbyes for a fish depend on the weather, but they don't have to happen straight away. Many families in Amsterdam keep a fish frozen, or keep a larger fish's ashes indoors, until a calm, dry day for a small ceremony by the pond or in the garden. Choose a day that suits the people who loved the fish.

What fish cremation costs in Amsterdam

Across Europe, small-pet cremation prices vary by country but follow the same logic: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a fish always falls in the lowest weight band. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 / EUR 250[5] for pets under 2 kg and up to 10 kg respectively. Ask any provider near Amsterdam what they'd return for your fish's size.

We keep the detailed North Holland price table on one page so it stays current: see North Holland prices.

Burial, scattering and release rules in North Holland

You don't need a permit to have a fish cremated, but what you do with the body or the ashes can be governed by local rules. The most important one for fish keepers applies to living fish: never release a fish, or empty a pond or tank, into a creek, lake or drain. Many places restrict releasing non-native fish because they can spread disease and crowd out wildlife.

In the Netherlands, pet crematoria are widespread and a comparison site lists dozens of them, with a wide spread of prices. For a fish, ask for the smallest weight band and whether ashes can be returned. Many Dutch gardens sit close to ditches and canals, so bury small fish well away from the water or choose cremation.

Step by step, from tank to goodbye

  1. If a big koi is going for private cremation, take its length and get a rough weight by standing on bathroom scales holding the bagged fish.
  2. Photograph its markings before it goes in the freezer. A photo can be checked against the paperwork later, and many families treasure it regardless.
  3. Wrap it in an old towel inside two strong bags, then lay it flat in the freezer so it slides into a cooler later.
  4. Call a provider that has cremated fish before and ask how much ash it expects and how it tracks each pet.
  5. Work out the urn size with the urn size calculator before you buy anything.
  6. Drive it over in an insulated box with frozen gel packs, and think ahead about a home for the ashes, whether that's indoors on a shelf, out in the garden or beside the pond.

Ways to mark the spot

Amsterdam's narrow canal houses and apartment blocks come with the famously steep Dutch staircases, and many homes have no garden at all; some people live on houseboats. That makes burying a pet at home rarely possible and carrying a body down to the street hard, so home collection is what most owners ask for. When you book, mention the floor, whether there is a lift or a hoist beam, and whether a vehicle can stop on your canal street.

Questions people ask

Why does the Amsterdam page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Amsterdam?

Usually yes. Haarlem is about 11 miles away, Utrecht is about 21 miles away and The Hague is about 33 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do I find someone who will cremate a fish near Amsterdam?

Start with your vet, who will know which crematory handles their small animals. Then call that crematory directly and ask whether it accepts fish. A local fish store or koi club may know who other keepers use. You can also send us your location and we'll email options that serve Amsterdam.

Can two fish be cremated together?

Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tank mates or a pair of koi that always swam together are sometimes cremated side by side, and many families find that comforting. Tell the provider clearly, because a private cremation normally means one animal. If you'd rather keep each fish's ashes separate, bag and label them individually before freezing and ask whether separate cremations cost more.

Can you actually cremate a fish in Amsterdam?

Yes. Many pet crematories that handle small animals will cremate a fish, and a koi or large goldfish is cremated much like any small pet. The limit is size: a betta, guppy or tetra may leave no ash that can be separated and returned. Call first, give the length and rough weight, and ask what they'd expect to give back.

My fish jumped out of the tank. Could it still be alive?

Possibly, if it hasn't been out long. Many fish survive a few minutes on the floor. Slip it back into the aquarium straight away and watch the gills. If they move, keep the lights low and the water calm. If there's no movement after several minutes, the fish has probably died. Handle it with a damp cloth, fit a tight lid to protect the others and freeze the body while you decide.
