Finding fish aftercare in Florence

Most Florentines live in apartments, many in centuries-old buildings in the historic centre with steep stone stairs and no lift, while others live in the suburbs or in the hills toward Fiesole. Cars need a permit to enter the historic centre's ZTL, so a van may not reach your door. Tell the provider which piazza or corner a van can reach. Most Florentine vets can also arrange cremation for you.

Florence sits in a bowl surrounded by hills, and summers are very hot, often well above 35°C, while winters are cool and damp. In summer, cool your pet quickly: shutters closed, a tiled floor, a towel and cold packs. Summer tourist traffic also slows movement around the city, so contact your vet or a provider as soon as you can.

In a mid-sized city like Florence, you'll often end up talking to the same few people who handle small pets for every vet in town. That familiarity can work in your favor. Ask whether they have cremated fish before, how they keep a very small pet identified from start to finish and whether a private cremation is truly private rather than partitioned. Those three answers tell you most of what you need to know.

With roughly 382,000 residents, Florence is the largest of the 2 Tuscany communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Bologna, about 50 miles (81 km) away, which is where some providers serving Florence are based.

Florence sits within easy reach of Siena (31 miles), Bologna (50 miles) and Portofino (108 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Florence; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Cremation in Italy: a little context

Only about 38.16%[1] of people in Italy are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition. For fish, that usually means a small grave in the garden, which is simple and kind for most tank fish. Cremation is still available through vets and pet crematories, though, and it becomes more attractive for a large koi you'd like to keep close, or if you rent and might move.

That Italy rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Florence only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

What the seasons mean for fish in Florence

Wherever you are, the first rule for a fish is the same: take it out of the water as soon as you're sure it has died, then seal it and freeze it. In warm weather, do it within the hour, because decay fouls the water quickly. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial until spring.

Fish cremation quotes in Florence: what's normal

Across Europe, small-pet cremation prices vary by country but follow the same logic: collective cremation costs less than individual, and a fish always falls in the lowest weight band. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 / EUR 250[5] for pets under 2 kg and up to 10 kg respectively. Ask any provider near Florence what they'd return for your fish's size.

The full price table by size is on our Tuscany page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Local rules in Tuscany

Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for Tuscany, set out below, are all you need.

Step by step, from tank to goodbye

  1. If a big koi is going for private cremation, take its length and get a rough weight by standing on bathroom scales holding the bagged fish.
  2. Photograph its markings before it goes in the freezer. A photo can be checked against the paperwork later, and many families treasure it regardless.
  3. Wrap it in an old towel inside two strong bags and freeze it lying flat so it fits a cooler later.
  4. Call a provider that has cremated fish before and ask how much ash it expects and how it tracks each pet.
  5. Work out the urn size using the urn size calculator first, so you don't buy the wrong one.
  6. Drive it over in an insulated box with frozen gel packs, and think ahead about a home for the ashes, whether that's indoors on a shelf, out in the garden or beside the pond.

Keeping a fish's memory close

A garden grave is rarely realistic in Florence, where most families have a balcony rather than a garden, and Tuscan and municipal rules decide where it is allowed at all. Most Florentines therefore choose cremation, either individually, so the ashes come home, or communally. A pet cemetery on the edge of the city is another option for families who want a place to visit. Your vet will know what operates nearby.

Questions people ask

Where are the providers that serve Florence actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Bologna, about 50 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Florence and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

How do Italy attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Italy human cremation rate at about 38.16%[1]. We show it on the Florence page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Florence?

Usually yes. Siena is about 31 miles away, Bologna is about 50 miles away and Portofino is about 108 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do I explain a fish's death to my child?

Use simple, true words: the fish has died, its body stopped working and it won't come back. Avoid swapping in a lookalike. Let your child help with a small goodbye, such as choosing a stone, drawing a picture or picking a plant for the spot. A first pet's death is often a child's first loss, and handling it gently helps.

Where can I bury a fish if I live in an apartment in Florence?

A large planter on a balcony or windowsill works well for a small fish. Wrap it in paper, bury it in fresh compost and plant something on top. Don't bury pets in public parks or communal gardens without permission. If you'd rather not bury at all, communal cremation through a vet is a simple option.

Is it okay to flush a dead fish?

It's better not to. Fish can carry parasites and bacteria that shouldn't reach rivers, and wastewater isn't always fully treated, especially during storms. Never flush a fish that might still be alive. Burying it in the garden or a planter, or freezing it until you arrange cremation, is kinder and safer, and children often find a small burial less upsetting than a flush.
