Who to call first in Turin when a fish dies
Turin has cold, often foggy winters, when the damp settles in the Po valley, and warm summers with occasional heat waves in July and August. In winter a cool room gives you a little breathing space if your pet dies at home, but keep the body well away from radiators. In summer, use wrapped ice packs and arrange cremation within a day, and around Ferragosto in August, when the city empties, ask early about timing.
Turin families spend time in the Valentino Park along the Po, on the hill paths toward Superga and in the parks of the Crocetta and San Salvario, but many pets here live their whole lives in apartments above the porticoes. Most owners who ask for cremation want the ashes back. Ask the provider to state in writing that your pet will be cremated individually, because a collective cremation in Italy returns no ashes to the family.
In a city the size of Turin, most people who keep fish do it in an aquarium, often in an apartment with no garden at all. That rules out the backyard burial many of us grew up with, which is one reason fish cremation questions come up more often in big cities. A sealed bag in the freezer gives you time to decide. From there, a planter burial on the balcony, a communal cremation through a vet, or a private cremation for a larger fish are all realistic.
Turin's population is around 886,000.
Turin sits within easy reach of Genoa (77 miles), Milan (78 miles) and Como (85 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Turin; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

How Italy thinks about cremation
Burial is still the more common tradition in Italy, where only about 38.16%[1] of people are cremated. Families here often have more garden space, which makes a fish burial easy: a quiet corner, a flat stone and perhaps a plant. Cremation remains an option, and some families choose it specifically because a pond fish that died of disease shouldn't be buried near other fish.
We take the Italy rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Turin, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Timing a fish's aftercare in Turin's climate
Outdoor goodbyes for a fish depend on the weather, but they don't have to happen straight away. Many families in Turin keep a fish frozen, or keep a larger fish's ashes indoors, until a calm, dry day for a small ceremony by the pond or in the garden. Choose a day that suits the people who loved the fish.

What fish cremation costs in Turin
Europe has about 17.6 million[5] home aquariums, so fish owners are far from unusual. What Piedmont allows for a pet fish
Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places. Often there's no licence written for them at all, and any inspection covers the equipment rather than how pets are handled. That puts the questions in your hands: ask in writing how a small body is labeled from drop-off to return and whether the cremation is truly individual. Rules on burial and scattering in Piedmont follow.
A checklist for Turin fish keepers
- Book an aquatic vet if an old or sick fish is clearly suffering. A gentle overdose of anesthetic lets it drift off without distress.
- Settle the aftercare question when you book, so there's no confusion about whether your fish goes on to a crematory from the vet or comes home with you.
- Carry it in a tub of water from its own tank or pond, lid on, with a battery air pump for a long drive.
- Decide whether you want to stay. Being present feels right to many people, but saying your goodbye at home beforehand is just as valid.
- Choose private cremation, communal cremation or a home burial and have the full price written down before you head home.
- Watch the remaining fish closely for a week or so, above all when infection was part of the story.
Remembering your fish in Turin
Turin is a city of elegant apartment buildings, long porticoes and inner courtyards, with the Alps visible on clear days and the green hill rising across the Po. Most families live in flats without a garden, so burying a pet at home is rarely an option, and home collection is what most owners ask for. Mention the floor, whether there is a lift, and whether a car can stop outside, since traffic in parts of the centre is restricted.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Italy?
For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Turin follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Turin?
The closest communities we cover are Genoa (about 77 miles), Milan (about 78 miles) and Como (about 85 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Turin too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can you actually cremate a fish in Turin?
Yes. Many pet crematories that handle small animals will cremate a fish, and a koi or large goldfish is cremated much like any small pet. The limit is size: a betta, guppy or tetra may leave no ash that can be separated and returned. Call first, give the length and rough weight, and ask what they'd expect to give back.
Can two fish be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tank mates or a pair of koi that always swam together are sometimes cremated side by side, and many families find that comforting. Tell the provider clearly, because a private cremation normally means one animal. If you'd rather keep each fish's ashes separate, bag and label them individually before freezing and ask whether separate cremations cost more.
What can I keep if my fish was too small to leave ashes?
Plenty. A framed photo, a painting or print of the fish, its favorite tank ornament, a plant grown over a garden burial or a painted stone all work. Some crematories offer a token vial with a certificate, though the contents may be mostly from the chamber. Ask what's inside before you pay, and choose whatever feels like your fish.
Will a crematory in Turin collect a large koi from my home?
Some will, usually for an extra fee, but most won't net a fish from the pond. Lift the koi out yourself, wrap it in a damp towel, seal it and keep it chilled or frozen. In a city the size of Turin, dropping it off in a cooler is often quicker and cheaper than waiting for a collection slot.
