The lakeside promenade out toward Villa Olmo, the gardens along the shore and the paths above town at Brunate, a short ride up by funicular, are where many Como pets spent their days. Owners often think of the view across the water to the mountains when they picture their animal. Burial remains the more familiar path in Italy, where cremation accounts for only 38.16%[1] of deaths. If that tradition matters to you, there's a middle road for a fish lost to an infection: cremate it, then bury the ashes. Cremated remains carry no infection, so you can place them near the pond or under a favorite plant without any risk to the fish still living there, and you keep the graveside moment that feels right to your family.

Rules about pets after death are set locally, and fish are usually covered by the same rules as other small pets. Garden burial is often allowed on land you own, with limits near wells and water. Scattering ashes directly into lakes and rivers may need permission. Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places, and some ban releasing goldfish outright.

- Take a breath. With your fish out of the water, there's no decision that can't wait an hour.
- Wrap your fish in a damp paper towel or cloth, seal it and label it so no one in Como gets a shock at the freezer.

Is it okay to flush a dead fish?
It's better not to. Fish can carry parasites and bacteria that shouldn't reach rivers, and wastewater isn't always fully treated, especially during storms. Never flush a fish that might still be alive. Burying it in the garden or a planter, or freezing it until you arrange cremation, is kinder and safer, and children often find a small burial less upsetting than a flush.
How long can I keep a dead fish in the freezer?
Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.
