Dublin is a city of terraced houses, newer apartment blocks and long suburban estates stretching out toward Fingal and the mountains, and many homes have only a small back garden. That matters because garden burial, long the Irish default for a family pet, is not realistic for everyone. Cremation has become a common choice for pets even though most Irish families still bury their human dead, and home collection is usually what Dublin owners ask for first.
Dublin's green spaces, from the Phoenix Park to the Bull Island strands, Sandymount and the Dublin Mountains, are part of how many families here spend time with their animals, and they often become part of how people say goodbye. Some families ask for ashes back so they can bring a small portion to a place that mattered, while others keep them at home. Cremation in Ireland: a little context
Only about 26.56%[1] of people in Ireland are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition. For fish, that usually means a small grave in the garden, which is simple and kind for most tank fish. Cremation is still available through vets and pet crematories, though, and it becomes more attractive for a large koi you'd like to keep close, or if you rent and might move.

Timing a fish's aftercare in Dublin's climate
Wherever you are, the first rule for a fish is the same: take it out of the water as soon as you're sure it has died, then seal it and freeze it. In warm weather, do it within the hour, because decay fouls the water quickly. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial until spring.
Budgeting for a koi or tank fish in Dublin
Speed can cost extra. One Norwegian crematorium charges NOK 1,790 for same-day return of ashes[5], and in Sweden a return of two to four weeks is normal[6]. A fish doesn't need an express service: frozen, it can wait, and so can its ashes. When you ask a provider near Dublin for a quote, ask for the standard timescale and leave off any rush fee.

Burial, scattering and release rules in Leinster
Most of the decisions after a fish dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, scattering and anything that involves open water. Flushing is a poor idea everywhere: fish can carry parasites and bacteria, and not every drain leads to full treatment, especially during heavy rain. In Ireland, pet crematoria offer individual cremation for small pets, with one listing prices from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg. A fish sits well under that, so ask what they'd expect to return before you pay. Garden burial on your own land is common for small fish; keep well clear of wells and streams.
A checklist for Dublin fish keepers
- If your child's fish dies while they're at school, either leave the fish in place or put it somewhere cold, then be honest with them once they're home.
- Skip the secret replacement. Most children spot the difference, and finding out later hurts more than hearing the truth now.
- Let them see the fish if they want to, wrapped in a soft cloth, and answer questions in plain words.
- Offer two or three choices for the goodbye, such as a flowerpot on the windowsill, a spot in the garden or a small box to keep.
- Set a time for the goodbye, so they can make a card, pick a stone or choose words to say.
- Leave the tank empty for a while and hold off on new-fish talk unless your child brings it up first.
