Galway, Connacht
Who to call first in Galway when a fish dies
Atlantic weather dominates Galway: mild, very wet and often windy, with few hard frosts and summers that rarely get hot. That makes the first day easier. Put your pet on an old towel in a cool back room or shed, away from the radiators, and a day's wait before collection is no problem. In a rare warm spell, add a couple of frozen packs wrapped in a cloth.
Salthill is Galway's great outdoor room: owners stroll the prom in all weathers, pets in tow, with the Burren hills across the bay and the Aran Islands on the horizon on a clear evening. Others prefer the Corrib riverbank toward Menlo or the woods at Barna. When a family pictures its animal, it is often there. For scattering by the sea, choose a calm, low-tide morning, well clear of bathing spots and slipways.
Plenty of people around Galway fish for sport, and some feel a little sheepish about grieving a pet fish. There's no contradiction. A goldfish or koi that lived with your family for years, came to the glass when you walked in and knew the sound of the feed tub was a companion, not a catch. It deserves the same thought you'd give any pet, whether that ends in a garden grave, a planter or a cremation near Galway.
Galway's population is around 80,000.
Galway sits within easy reach of Cork (98 miles, a larger centre) and Dublin (116 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Galway; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Cremation habits in Ireland, and what they mean for a fish
In Ireland, where the cremation rate is only 26.56%[1], burial customs often carry small rituals: a cloth wrapping, a few words, a marker. Those translate beautifully to a fish. Wrap it in a clean cotton handkerchief or a large garden leaf, say something about what it meant to you and set a smooth stone or shell on the spot. Children tend to remember the ritual far longer than the method.
The Ireland percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Galway, not as a count of pets.
Galway weather, ponds and timing
Whatever the season in Galway, the freezer takes the pressure off. A fish sealed in a bag with the air pressed out, wrapped in a towel and labeled, can wait weeks or months while you find a provider that accepts fish or wait for the right day for a burial. There's no need to decide anything in the first hour.

Budgeting for a koi or tank fish in Galway
Speed can cost extra. One Norwegian crematorium charges NOK 1,790 for same-day return of ashes[5], and in Sweden a return of two to four weeks is normal[6]. A fish doesn't need an express service: frozen, it can wait, and so can its ashes. When you ask a provider near Galway for a quote, ask for the standard timescale and leave off any rush fee.

Burial, scattering and release rules in Connacht
You don't need a permit to have a fish cremated, but what you do with the body or the ashes can be governed by local rules. The most important one for fish keepers applies to living fish: never release a fish, or empty a pond or tank, into a creek, lake or drain. Many places restrict releasing non-native fish because they can spread disease and crowd out wildlife.
In Ireland, pet crematoria offer individual cremation for small pets, with one listing prices from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg. A fish sits well under that, so ask what they'd expect to return before you pay. Garden burial on your own land is common for small fish; keep well clear of wells and streams.
A checklist for Galway fish keepers
- Book an aquatic vet if an old or sick fish is clearly suffering. A gentle overdose of anesthetic lets it drift off without distress.
- Settle the aftercare question when you book, so you know whether the vet will send your fish to a crematory or hand it back to you.
- Carry it in a tub of water from its own tank or pond, keep the lid on, and add a battery-powered air pump for a longer trip.
- Decide whether you want to stay. Being present feels right to many people, but saying your goodbye at home beforehand is just as valid.
- Choose private cremation, communal cremation or a home burial and have the full price written down before you head home.
- Watch the remaining fish closely for a week or so, above all when infection was part of the story.
Keeping your fish part of the family story
Galway is a compact, busy city with plenty of rented flats and terraced houses near the centre, a big student population and estates spreading out toward Knocknacarra, Oranmore and Barna. Traffic around the bridges and the Headford Road can crawl at rush hour. If you want your pet collected, give the full address, including an Eircode, and mention stairs or parking; many people simply drive in at a quieter time.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Galway?
Usually yes. Cork is about 98 miles away and Dublin is about 116 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Ireland?
For people, yes: about 26.56%[1] of Ireland deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Galway follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is water cremation available for pets in Ireland?
It depends on the country and even the region. Alkaline hydrolysis, sometimes called resomation, is offered for pets in parts of Europe, and a Dutch life-cycle study cited by the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance found it had far less environmental impact than flame cremation[8]. Ask providers near Galway whether they offer it and accept fish. If not, flame cremation or a garden burial are both fine choices.
Can I bury a fish near a farm pond or well near Galway?
Keep any burial well away from ponds, streams and wells, especially if the fish died of disease. Rain can carry anything in the soil back into water that other animals or people use. Choose a spot further up the garden, or choose cremation instead.
Is it okay to flush a dead fish?
It's better not to. Fish can carry parasites and bacteria that shouldn't reach rivers, and wastewater isn't always fully treated, especially during storms. Never flush a fish that might still be alive. Burying it in the garden or a planter, or freezing it until you arrange cremation, is kinder and safer, and children often find a small burial less upsetting than a flush.
Is a fish really a pet worth cremating?
If it mattered to you, yes. Koi can live 30 to 40 years and many families have kept the same fish for decades. A goldfish can live 6 to 7 years. The time you spent feeding, watching and caring for a fish is real, and so is the grief. Choose the goodbye that fits the fish and your family.
