Jakarta, Indonesia
Who to call first in Jakarta when a fish dies
Jakarta is hot and humid all year, and during the rainy season, usually heaviest around January and February, floods can close streets for days. A pet's body needs cooling within a few hours in this climate: wrap it in a towel, place ice packs near the belly and back, and keep the room air-conditioned. If floodwater is rising, tell any provider straight away, as it may change how and when they can reach you.
Cats are especially popular in Jakarta, alongside birds, fish, rabbits and many other pets. Families here come from many faiths, and attitudes to cremation differ: some prefer burial, while others are comfortable with cremation. There's no right answer. If you have a garden, burial may be possible; if you live in an apartment, cremation with ashes returned is often the practical choice.
High-rise living in Jakarta brings its own small hurdles. Your freezer may be too small for a big fish, and the building may not want anything buried in a shared courtyard bed. A friend with a chest freezer or your vet's clinic will often hold a fish for a few days if you ask. If shared planters are off limits, a pot on your own balcony or a communal cremation keeps the goodbye simple and avoids a row with the building manager.
Jakarta's population is around 10,560,000.
10 million[1]

13%[2]

Cremation in Indonesia: a little context
Attitudes to cremation vary from place to place, but for fish the practical questions are the same everywhere. Is the fish big enough to leave ash you could keep? Does a local provider accept aquatic pets? And would a burial, a planter or a memorial that needs no ash suit it better? In Jakarta, as anywhere, your fish's size answers most of those questions for you.
When the weather sets the pace in Jakarta
Local weather affects fish in two ways. Heat lowers the oxygen in pond and tank water and speeds up decay, so warm-weather losses need prompt action. Cold can freeze ponds and ground alike, so a winter burial may have to wait. Your provider in Jakarta will know the seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest at this time of year.

Budgeting for a koi or tank fish in Jakarta
In Jakarta, small-pet cremation is widely available where pet funeral services exist, and many providers offer a short farewell as part of the package. For a fish, confirm they accept aquatic pets and ask what will be returned. The table shows published small-pet prices from Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo as a guide.

The legal side of losing a fish in Indonesia
Most of the decisions after a fish dies are yours to make. The exceptions are burial, scattering and anything that involves open water. Flushing is a poor idea everywhere: fish can carry parasites and bacteria, and not every drain leads to full treatment, especially during heavy rain. Here's what applies in Indonesia for burial and scattering.
From the first minute to the last goodbye
- Remove the fish from the pond or tank promptly, and with no delay at all if it's warm out.
- Count your stock and look for a cause: a heron, a pump failure, a hot still night or a sudden water problem.
- Fix the water first: add aeration, do a partial water change if readings are off and hold off feeding for a day.
- Freeze the fish you lost, each one in its own sealed bag if you want them cremated separately.
- Decide whether you want ashes back. When you don't, a communal cremation or a burial at a good distance from the pond is a simple, kind choice.
- Ask for a written quote that lists collection, the cremation and the container.
- Mark the loss with a stone by the pond, a water plant or a note in your fish log.
Remembering your fish in Jakarta
Greater Jakarta is enormous, from apartment towers in the center to dense kampung neighborhoods and gated housing estates in the surrounding cities, and traffic can turn a short trip into hours. That makes home collection valuable. When you ask for options, give your area, whether you live in an apartment or a house, and how a car can reach you, so collection can be timed around the roads.

Questions people ask
Can you actually cremate a fish in Jakarta?
Yes. Many pet crematories that handle small animals will cremate a fish, and a koi or large goldfish is cremated much like any small pet. The limit is size: a betta, guppy or tetra may leave no ash that can be separated and returned. Call first, give the length and rough weight, and ask what they'd expect to give back.
What should I do with an arowana or large aquarium fish that has died?
Lift it out, wrap it in a damp towel, seal it in a bag and freeze it. A large arowana, oscar or koi is big enough for a private cremation with ashes returned. Ask a pet crematory near Jakarta for their small-pet price and whether they have handled large aquarium fish before.
How much ash does a fish leave after cremation?
Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of body weight, and fish tend toward the low end because they're mostly water with fine bones. A large koi might return a few ounces, enough for a small urn. A pond goldfish may leave a keepsake vial's worth. A small tank fish may leave nothing you could collect separately.
Is a fish really a pet worth cremating?
If it mattered to you, yes. Koi can live 30 to 40 years and many families have kept the same fish for decades. A goldfish can live 6 to 7 years. The time you spent feeding, watching and caring for a fish is real, and so is the grief. Choose the goodbye that fits the fish and your family.
Can two fish be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tank mates or a pair of koi that always swam together are sometimes cremated side by side, and many families find that comforting. Tell the provider clearly, because a private cremation normally means one animal. If you'd rather keep each fish's ashes separate, bag and label them individually before freezing and ask whether separate cremations cost more.
Can I put a fish's ashes in a pet columbarium near Jakarta?
Often yes. Pet columbaria in several Asian cities accept small urns, and a fish's ashes need very little space. Ask about niche sizes, what photos or decorations you can place inside and the yearly fee, because many charge rent after the first year. A shared niche with another family pet is sometimes possible and can reduce the cost.
