Fish & Koi Cremation in Jakarta: what to know
Many children across Jakarta have a goldfish or betta as their first pet, and its death is often their first real loss. A small goodbye, such as a garden burial with a painted stone or a planter on the windowsill, helps more than a quick flush. For larger fish, cremation gives families something to keep.
Fish aftercare across Jakarta depends on the fish and where you live. In the bigger cities you'll usually find several pet crematories that handle small animals, and sometimes water cremation. In smaller towns, the local vet typically sends small pets to a regional crematory, so a fish may wait in a freezer for a scheduled collection. That's no problem: a fish frozen promptly keeps well.

How Jakarta thinks about cremation
Attitudes to cremation vary from place to place, but for fish the practical questions are the same everywhere. Is the fish big enough to leave ash you could keep? Does a local provider accept aquatic pets? And would a burial, a planter or a memorial that needs no ash suit it better? In Jakarta, as anywhere, your fish's size answers most of those questions for you.
Budgeting for a koi or tank fish in Jakarta
Pet funeral customs in parts of Asia are well developed, and small pets are included. In Tokyo, one pet memorial park lists communal and individual cremation for pets under 5 kg at JPY 14,300 and JPY 22,000[1], and a fish would fall in that band. Ask any provider near Jakarta exactly what's included, such as a short ceremony or a columbarium niche.
Aquarium keeping is popular across much of Asia, from arowana and koi to goldfish and bettas. For a large fish near Jakarta, individual cremation at the small-pet rate is realistic. For a very small fish, ask about communal cremation or a symbolic return, and compare what each includes before you pay.
| Place | Communal | Individual |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo (pet under 5 kg) | JPY 14,300 | JPY 22,000 |
| Singapore (cat under 5 kg) | SGD 160 | SGD 280 |
| Hong Kong (1–5 kg pet) | n/a | HKD 1,300 |

Burial, scattering and release rules in Jakarta
You don't need a permit to have a fish cremated, but what you do with the body or the ashes can be governed by local rules. The most important one for fish keepers applies to living fish: never release a fish, or empty a pond or tank, into a creek, lake or drain. Many places restrict releasing non-native fish because they can spread disease and crowd out wildlife.
The first day after a fish dies
- Don't flush. Net your fish out of the water, then wrap it in a bit of paper or cotton wool.
- Put it in the freezer in a sealed bag, clearly labeled.
- Check the tank or pond the same day: test the water and look over every remaining fish.
- Think about what you'd like to keep: perhaps ashes in a small urn or a token vial, a printed photo, or just somewhere you can go to remember.
- Call a crematory or your vet in Jakarta, tell them how big the fish is and ask directly what would come back to you.
- Let yourself grieve. Years of daily feeding become a habit, and losing that fish leaves a hole in your day.
Memorials that suit a fish
A traditional Japanese fish print, gyotaku, can be made from a photo rather than the fish itself, and some artists will paint one of your koi from pictures. It's a striking way to remember a fish with distinctive markings. Others in Jakarta keep a scale shed in the pond or the fish's name on a small plaque.

Questions people ask
How long does it take to get a fish's ashes back in Jakarta?
Many families receive private cremation ashes within one to two weeks. In rural areas, where small pets travel to a regional crematory on a set schedule, it can take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
Is it legal to flush or release a fish in Jakarta?
Releasing live fish into the wild is restricted in many places because non-native fish can spread disease and harm native species. Flushing a dead fish isn't a good idea either, as not all wastewater is fully treated. Freeze the fish and choose a burial or cremation instead.
How much does fish cremation cost in Jakarta?
A fish nearly always falls in the smallest weight band, so expect the provider's minimum price for a small pet. Communal cremation is cheaper and returns no ashes. Home collection, urns and keepsakes add to the total. Ask for an itemized written quote, and ask what they'd return for your fish's size before paying for a private cremation.
How many communities do you cover in Jakarta?
We currently have local fish aftercare guides for 1 communities in Jakarta, including Jakarta. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules for burial and scattering, and how to find a provider that accepts fish.
Can I scatter my koi's ashes in a lake or river in Jakarta?
It depends on who manages the water, and some public waters require permission. Scattering around your own pond, in the garden rather than into the water, avoids the question and keeps the memorial close. If you use a public place, choose a quiet spot and check the rules first.
Who can take my remaining fish if I give up the pond in Jakarta?
Ask aquarium shops, pond societies, rehoming groups and keepers you know. Some shops take fish for store credit or simply for free. Releasing them into open water is restricted in many places, however suitable it looks, because pet fish bring diseases and unbalance native wildlife.
