Who will cremate a fish in Mumbai?
Mumbai is hot and humid for much of the year, and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain and flooding that can stop traffic. In that weather, a pet's body needs cooling right away: wrap it in a towel with ice packs near the belly and back, and keep the room air-conditioned. If roads are flooded, tell the provider, as it may change when they can reach you.
Mumbai is one of the most crowded cities anywhere, and most pets live in flats in housing societies, older chawls or high-rise towers, with long journeys across the city by road or local train. A garden burial is rarely an option here, so most families choose cremation. When you ask for options, give your suburb, building, floor and whether a car can reach the gate, so collection can be planned around traffic.
High-rise living in Mumbai brings its own small hurdles. Your freezer may be too small for a big fish, and the building may not want anything buried in a shared courtyard bed. A friend with a chest freezer or your vet's clinic will often hold a fish for a few days if you ask. If shared planters are off limits, a pot on your own balcony or a communal cremation keeps the goodbye simple and avoids a row with the building manager.
Mumbai's population is around 12,478,000.

Local attitudes to cremation
Urns and keepsakes are easy to buy in India, where cremation is the choice for about 80%[1] of people, but most are sized for a cat or a dog, and a fish's ashes can look lost inside them. Look for a keepsake urn of a few cubic inches, a glass heart or a small wooden box. The urn size calculator helps if you're unsure. For a large koi, one small urn indoors and a pinch saved for the garden often works well.
That India rate is a human one, published by Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014). We quote it for Mumbai only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
When the weather sets the pace in Mumbai
Whatever the season in Mumbai, the freezer takes the pressure off. A fish sealed in a bag with the air pressed out, wrapped in a towel and labeled, can wait weeks or months while you find a provider that accepts fish or wait for the right day for a burial. There's no need to decide anything in the first hour.

Paying for a fish's goodbye in Mumbai
Aquarium keeping is popular across much of Asia, from arowana and koi to goldfish and bettas. For a large fish near Mumbai, individual cremation at the small-pet rate is realistic. For a very small fish, ask about communal cremation or a symbolic return, and compare what each includes before you pay.

The legal side of losing a fish in Maharashtra
If you rent, your lease matters more than any law. Most tenancy agreements don't mention pet burials, but a landlord or homeowners' association can still object to a grave in a shared garden. A planter on your own balcony or patio avoids the question, as does cremation. Pond fish in a rented garden raise one more point: ask before draining or filling in a pond when you move out. The notes below cover what Maharashtra allows.
A checklist for Mumbai fish keepers
- If your child's fish dies while they're at school, either leave the fish in place or put it somewhere cold, then be honest with them once they're home.
- Skip the secret replacement. Children usually notice, and the truth is easier to handle than a discovery later.
- Let them see the fish if they want to, resting in a soft cloth, and give plain, simple answers to whatever they ask.
- Offer two or three choices for how to say goodbye: a windowsill flowerpot, a place in the garden or a little box they can hold on to.
- Set a time for the goodbye, giving them a chance to write a card, find a stone or think of words.
- Leave the tank empty for a while before talking about a new fish, unless your child asks sooner.
Small memorials for a small life in Mumbai
Cremation is the norm for people in India, around 80% of deaths, and many Mumbai families find pet cremation natural. Some choose to immerse ashes in the sea, as they would for a relative, while others keep them at home. Ask whether a private cremation lets you be present, how the ashes are returned and how long the process takes.

Questions people ask
Why does the Mumbai page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014) reports about 80%[1] of India residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will a crematory in Mumbai collect a large koi from my home?
Some will, usually for an extra fee, but most won't net a fish from the pond. Lift the koi out yourself, wrap it in a damp towel, seal it and keep it chilled or frozen. In a city the size of Mumbai, dropping it off in a cooler is often quicker and cheaper than waiting for a collection slot.
Can two fish be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tank mates or a pair of koi that always swam together are sometimes cremated side by side, and many families find that comforting. Tell the provider clearly, because a private cremation normally means one animal. If you'd rather keep each fish's ashes separate, bag and label them individually before freezing and ask whether separate cremations cost more.
Are there pet funeral services for fish in Mumbai?
In many Asian cities, pet funeral services are well established and include small pets. Some offer a short farewell ceremony and a columbarium niche as well as cremation. Ask whether they accept fish, what size they can return ashes for and what exactly is included in the package price.
How do I find someone who will cremate a fish near Mumbai?
Start with your vet, who will know which crematory handles their small animals. Then call that crematory directly and ask whether it accepts fish. A local fish store or koi club may know who other keepers use. You can also send us your location and we'll email options that serve Mumbai.
Is there a fish vet in Mumbai?
Large cities are the most likely places to have aquatic or exotic-animal vets. If you're losing several fish, one can examine a freshly chilled body to look for parasites or infection. Your regular vet, a koi club or a local fish store can usually point you to someone who sees fish.
