Koi and aquarium fish cremation in Dortmund

Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia

Getting help with a fish loss around Dortmund

The Ruhr's climate is mild and damp, with grey winters and summers that now bring hotter spells than they used to. In warm weather, wrap your pet in a towel, put cool packs against the body and keep the room shaded and cool. In winter you usually have more time, but choosing between cremation, a pet cemetery or a garden burial within a day or two keeps things calm.

Dortmund's pets live everywhere from the dense apartment streets around the Nordstadt to the miners' cottage settlements and semi-detached houses of the outer districts. If you live in an older block without a lift, or rely on the U-Bahn rather than a car, getting your pet to a vet or crematorium can be hard. Say which district you are in, which floor, and where a van could pull up; most regional providers will come to the door.

Emergency vet hospitals in Dortmund are open around the clock, but most are not set up to treat fish, and a fish that has already died doesn't need an emergency visit. Net it out, wrap it and put it in the freezer. Everything else can wait until a normal working day, when you can call a crematory or your vet calmly and ask what they can do for a fish of that size.

With roughly 588,000 residents, Dortmund is the 3rd-largest of the 6 North Rhine-Westphalia communities we cover.

Dortmund sits within easy reach of Essen (20 miles), Munster (32 miles) and Dusseldorf (36 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Dortmund; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

About 10 million US households keep freshwater fish.

A fish at home in Dortmund

Cremation, custom and the family fish in Germany

With about 76.0%[1] of people cremated, cremation is firmly part of local life in Germany. Families who keep ashes at home for a parent often feel the same about a long-lived pet, and a koi that has been in the family for twenty years is no exception. If you want your fish home in a small urn beside the pond or on a shelf, you'll find plenty of people here who understand exactly why.

That Germany rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Dortmund only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Timing a fish's aftercare in Dortmund's climate

Wherever you are, the first rule for a fish is the same: take it out of the water as soon as you're sure it has died, then seal it and freeze it. In warm weather, do it within the hour, because decay fouls the water quickly. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can delay a burial until spring.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Dortmund

Budgeting for a koi or tank fish in Dortmund

Prices spread widely even inside one European country. Across 31 Dutch pet crematoria, individual cremation ranged from EUR 70 to 700[5], a tenfold gap for what is often the same service. A fish sits in the smallest weight band everywhere, so near Dortmund it pays to ask two providers for their lowest-band individual and collective prices, and to confirm what comes back before you choose.

The full price table by size is on our North Rhine-Westphalia page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in North Rhine-Westphalia

Ashes from a fish are mostly bone mineral, and scattering them is rarely regulated on your own land. Tipping them into a pond that still holds fish can cloud the water, so many keepers scatter around the edge instead. Public lakes, rivers and parks are a different matter: the body that manages them can set its own rules. Here's what applies in North Rhine-Westphalia.

In Germany, home burial of a pet on your own land needs at least 50 cm of soil cover and isn't allowed in water-protection areas, which matters if your garden is near a well or stream. Koi keeping is popular, and pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking and whether fish are accepted.

From the first minute to the last goodbye

  1. If a big koi is going for private cremation, take its length and get a rough weight by standing on bathroom scales holding the bagged fish.
  2. Photograph its markings before it goes in the freezer. A photo can be checked against the paperwork later, and many families treasure it regardless.
  3. Wrap it in an old towel inside two strong bags, then lay it flat in the freezer so it slides into a cooler later.
  4. Call a provider that has cremated fish before and find out roughly how much ash to expect and how each pet stays identified.
  5. Work out the urn size with the urn size calculator before you buy anything.
  6. Drive it over in an insulated box with frozen gel packs, and plan where the ashes will go: a shelf indoors, the garden or around the pond.

Small memorials for a small life in Dortmund

Dortmund has turned old industrial sites into green space, most famously the lake at Phoenix-See where a steelworks once stood, and the Westfalenpark and Rombergpark are close to many homes. In Germany, pet cremation and pet cemeteries are both well established. Burying a small pet in your own garden is sometimes possible, but rules depend on the local authority and water protection zones, so check with the city first.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dortmund?

Usually yes. Essen is about 20 miles away, Munster is about 32 miles away and Dusseldorf is about 36 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is cremation common in Germany?

For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Dortmund follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

How do I find someone who will cremate a fish near Dortmund?

Start with your vet, who will know which crematory handles their small animals. Then call that crematory directly and ask whether it accepts fish. A local fish store or koi club may know who other keepers use. You can also send us your location and we'll email options that serve Dortmund.

Can two fish be cremated together?

Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tank mates or a pair of koi that always swam together are sometimes cremated side by side, and many families find that comforting. Tell the provider clearly, because a private cremation normally means one animal. If you'd rather keep each fish's ashes separate, bag and label them individually before freezing and ask whether separate cremations cost more.

Is a fish really a pet worth cremating?

If it mattered to you, yes. Koi can live 30 to 40 years and many families have kept the same fish for decades. A goldfish can live 6 to 7 years. The time you spent feeding, watching and caring for a fish is real, and so is the grief. Choose the goodbye that fits the fish and your family.

Is there a fish vet in Dortmund?

Large cities are the most likely places to have aquatic or exotic-animal vets. If you're losing several fish, one can examine a freshly chilled body to look for parasites or infection. Your regular vet, a koi club or a local fish store can usually point you to someone who sees fish.
