Heidelberg, Baden-Wurttemberg
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Heidelberg picture
Heidelberg packs a lot into a narrow valley: the old town squeezed between the Neckar and the castle hill, student flats in older buildings, and family homes spreading into districts like Handschuhsheim and out onto the Rhine plain. Many residents cycle or use trams rather than drive. If your pet dies at home, a collection from your door may be easier than transporting your pet yourself, so mention your floor and whether there's a lift.
The Upper Rhine plain around Heidelberg is one of Germany's warmest areas, with early springs and summer days that can turn genuinely hot, while winters are mild with occasional frost. In warm weather, cool your pet's body quickly with a towel and ice packs in the coolest room. On a hot day in a top-floor flat under the roof, that matters even more.
Local fish stores in Heidelberg are often an overlooked source of help. Staff see fish die every week and many know which vets and crematories will take a customer's fish. Some stores will also test a water sample for you, which is worth doing the same day a fish dies without an obvious reason. Take a clean jar of tank or pond water with you and ask for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH readings.
About 160,000 people live in Heidelberg, which makes it the 5th-largest of the 5 Baden-Wurttemberg communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Mannheim, about 11 miles (18 km) away, which is where some providers serving Heidelberg are based.
Our pages for Mannheim (11 miles), Karlsruhe (30 miles) and Mainz (45 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Heidelberg as well.

Cremation, custom and the family fish in Germany
In Germany, about 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this normal, pet crematories are usually plentiful and some specialize in small animals. For a fish, that means more choice: private or communal cremation, sometimes water cremation, and keepsakes like glass paperweights or pendants. It also means more providers to compare, which is worth doing, because prices for the smallest weight band vary more than you'd think.
For the Germany figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Heidelberg rather than as pet data.
When the weather sets the pace in Heidelberg
Local weather affects fish in two ways. Heat lowers the oxygen in pond and tank water and speeds up decay, so warm-weather losses need prompt action. Cold can freeze ponds and ground alike, so a winter burial may have to wait. Your provider in Heidelberg will know the seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest at this time of year.

Fish cremation prices for Heidelberg families
Speed can cost extra. One Norwegian crematorium charges NOK 1,790 for same-day return of ashes[5], and in Sweden a return of two to four weeks is normal[6]. A fish doesn't need an express service: frozen, it can wait, and so can its ashes. When you ask a provider near Heidelberg for a quote, ask for the standard timescale and leave off any rush fee.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Baden-Wurttemberg: Baden-Wurttemberg costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, scattering and release rules in Baden-Wurttemberg
If you rent, your lease matters more than any law. Most tenancy agreements don't mention pet burials, but a landlord or homeowners' association can still object to a grave in a shared garden. A planter on your own balcony or patio avoids the question, as does cremation. Pond fish in a rented garden raise one more point: ask before draining or filling in a pond when you move out. The notes below cover what Baden-Wurttemberg allows.
In Germany, home burial of a pet on your own land needs at least 50 cm of soil cover and isn't allowed in water-protection areas, which matters if your garden is near a well or stream. Koi keeping is popular, and pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking and whether fish are accepted.
The first day after a fish dies
- Net your fish out gently and rest it on a soft cloth while you think.
- Freeze it the same day, sealed and wrapped. A frozen fish keeps for weeks, so the clock stops here.
- Work out its size: a provider will want the length from nose to tail fork and an approximate weight, so take both now.
- Tell the family, including children, in simple honest words. Avoid a quiet swap for a lookalike.
- Compare two options, such as private cremation with the ashes in a small urn against burying your fish beneath something newly planted.
- Book your choice and ask how your fish will be identified from drop-off to return.
Small memorials for a small life in Heidelberg
Pet cremation has become a common choice in Germany, and in a city like Heidelberg, where many people rent and gardens are small, it's often the practical one. A private cremation returns your pet's ashes, and many families like to be present for a short farewell beforehand. A communal cremation costs less and no ashes come back. Ask exactly what's included before you decide.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Heidelberg?
The closest communities we cover are Mannheim (about 11 miles), Karlsruhe (about 30 miles) and Mainz (about 45 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Heidelberg too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Mannheim to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Mannheim (roughly 11 miles from Heidelberg) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Germany attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Germany human cremation rate at about 76.0%[1]. We show it on the Heidelberg page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can I bury a pet fish in my garden in Germany?
In many European countries you can bury a small pet on your own land, with conditions. Some countries rule out pet burials in water-protection areas, so ask your local authority if you live near a spring, well or reservoir. Keep well away from wells and streams, wrap the fish in paper or cotton and check local rules if you rent.
Do pet crematoria in Germany accept fish?
Many do, especially for larger fish such as koi. Ask for individual (private) and collective (communal) prices for the smallest weight band, and ask whether a small fish will leave anything to return. Some providers suggest collective cremation or a symbolic return for very small fish.
What can I keep if my fish was too small to leave ashes?
Plenty. A framed photo, a painting or print of the fish, its favorite tank ornament, a plant grown over a garden burial or a painted stone all work. Some crematories offer a token vial with a certificate, though the contents may be mostly from the chamber. Ask what's inside before you pay, and choose whatever feels like your fish.
