Freiburg, Baden-Wurttemberg
What happens when a pet fish dies in Freiburg
Freiburg is a compact, car-light city, where many residents live in apartments in the old town, Wiehre, Stühlinger or the newer districts like Vauban and Rieselfeld, and get around by tram or bicycle. If your pet dies at home and you don't have a car, collection can spare you a difficult journey. When you ask for options, mention your district, which floor you live on and whether a vehicle can stop outside.
Freiburg is known as one of the warmest and sunniest cities in Germany, sheltered by the Black Forest, with hot summer spells and fairly mild winters in the Rhine valley, while the hills above can be snowy. In summer, cool a pet's body quickly: wrap your pet in a towel, place cold packs nearby and use the coolest room. In winter you usually have a little more time to decide.
Some providers that serve Freiburg are based out of town or near a larger city such as Karlsruhe, because crematories need space and permits. That's normal and doesn't mean a worse service. What matters for a fish is whether they accept it, whether they'll tell you honestly what will be returned and how long it takes. Freezing your fish first means distance and scheduling don't have to be rushed.
Freiburg is home to about 230,000 people, the 4th-largest of the 5 Baden-Wurttemberg communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Freiburg are based about 74 miles away in Karlsruhe, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Karlsruhe (74 miles), Stuttgart (82 miles, a larger centre) and Heidelberg (104 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Freiburg as well.

Cremation, custom and the family fish in Germany
About 76.0%[1] of people in Germany are cremated, and pet cremation is correspondingly common. For fish keepers, the practical upshot is that you're unlikely to be the first person to ask a local crematory about a koi. Many will have a clear policy: fish over a certain size cremated privately with ashes returned, very small fish offered communal cremation or a symbolic return. Ask to hear that policy before you book.
The Germany figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Timing a fish's aftercare in Freiburg's climate
Whatever the season in Freiburg, the freezer takes the pressure off. A fish sealed in a bag with the air pressed out, wrapped in a towel and labeled, can wait weeks or months while you find a provider that accepts fish or wait for the right day for a burial. There's no need to decide anything in the first hour.

Fish cremation prices for Freiburg families
Prices spread widely even inside one European country. Across 31 Dutch pet crematoria, individual cremation ranged from EUR 70 to 700[5], a tenfold gap for what is often the same service. A fish sits in the smallest weight band everywhere, so near Freiburg it pays to ask two providers for their lowest-band individual and collective prices, and to confirm what comes back before you choose.

The legal side of losing a fish in Baden-Wurttemberg
You don't need a permit to have a fish cremated, but what you do with the body or the ashes can be governed by local rules. The most important one for fish keepers applies to living fish: never release a fish, or empty a pond or tank, into a creek, lake or drain. Many places restrict releasing non-native fish because they can spread disease and crowd out wildlife.
In Germany, home burial of a pet on your own land needs at least 50 cm of soil cover and isn't allowed in water-protection areas, which matters if your garden is near a well or stream. Koi keeping is popular, and pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking and whether fish are accepted.
The first day after a fish dies
- Don't flush. Lift your fish out with a net and wrap it in paper or cotton.
- Put it in the freezer in a sealed bag, clearly labeled.
- Check the tank or pond the same day: test the water and look over every remaining fish.
- Think about what you'd like to keep: perhaps ashes in a small urn or a token vial, a printed photo, or just somewhere you can go to remember.
- Call a crematory or your vet in Freiburg, tell them how big the fish is and ask directly what would come back to you.
- Let yourself grieve. A fish you fed every day for years leaves a real gap in your routine.
Small memorials for a small life in Freiburg
Many Freiburg families associate a pet with the Schlossberg, the banks of the Dreisam or the forest paths that start almost at the edge of town. A private cremation returns ashes you can keep at home or scatter later, once you've checked the rules for that place. A communal cremation, with no ashes returned, costs less. Garden burial is another route some consider, but local rules apply, so check first.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Freiburg?
The closest communities we cover are Karlsruhe (about 74 miles), Stuttgart (about 82 miles) and Heidelberg (about 104 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Freiburg too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Karlsruhe to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Karlsruhe (roughly 74 miles from Freiburg) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Freiburg page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 76.0%[1] of Germany residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a vet put my sick fish to sleep in Freiburg?
Yes. A vet with fish experience can end its suffering by adding an anesthetic overdose to its water, and the fish simply falls asleep. Vets advise against home methods such as freezing a live fish or flushing it. Transport it in its own water with a lid on, and raise aftercare during the same appointment, so the vet can arrange cremation or hand the body back to you for burial.
Is it okay to flush a dead fish?
It's better not to. Fish can carry parasites and bacteria that shouldn't reach rivers, and wastewater isn't always fully treated, especially during storms. Never flush a fish that might still be alive. Burying it in the garden or a planter, or freezing it until you arrange cremation, is kinder and safer, and children often find a small burial less upsetting than a flush.
Do pet crematoria in Germany accept fish?
Many do, especially for larger fish such as koi. Ask for individual (private) and collective (communal) prices for the smallest weight band, and ask whether a small fish will leave anything to return. Some providers suggest collective cremation or a symbolic return for very small fish.
