West, Texas
What happens when a pet fish dies in West
West is a small McLennan County town on I-35, roughly twenty miles north of Waco, which is where most specialist vets and aftercare providers for the area are based. Some Waco services include West in their regular coverage; others treat it as an out-of-town call with a mileage fee. Ask up front, and check whether dropping your pet at your own vet would save money.
Winters in West are colder than many Texans expect, with January lows averaging about 34 degrees. On a cold night, an unheated utility room or enclosed porch can keep a pet's body cool until morning, though it should not be allowed to freeze if the family wants to say goodbye in person. August is another matter: afternoons near 97 degrees mean care should be arranged the same day.
Rural roads around West can mean a long drive for any pet service, so plan around the freezer rather than the clock. A fish sealed in a bag with the air pressed out, then wrapped in a towel, will keep for weeks. When the time suits you, take it to the vet or crematory together with any other errands. There's no rule that says a fish must be cremated within a day or two.
With roughly 2,629 residents, West is the 278th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Grand Prairie, about 61 miles (98 km) away, which is where some providers serving West are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Hillsboro (15 miles, a larger centre), Whitney (17 miles) and Waco (18 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

How Texas thinks about cremation
In Texas, with a human cremation rate around 55.7%[1], habits often split by generation. Grandparents may remember burying a goldfish in a matchbox at the bottom of the garden; younger keepers who rent or move often lean toward cremation or a planter. Both instincts are sound. If the family can't agree, the fish's size makes a fair tiebreaker: the bigger and older the fish, the more a cremation tends to make sense.
We take the Texas rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for West, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Season by season: fish losses in West
Tank fish feel the heat too. An apartment in West with the air conditioning off during a August workday can push aquarium water well above what most tropical fish tolerate. If you come home to a dead fish in a warm tank, remove it, cool the room, check the heater hasn't stuck on and add aeration. Then freeze your fish and decide on aftercare when the tank is safe.
In the hottest months (June, July, August and September), a dead fish breaks down fast, in the water and out of it. Net it out within the hour if you can, because decay releases ammonia that can harm the fish still living in the pond or tank. Seal it in a bag, press the air out and freeze it. Never leave a fish in a hot car on the way to a vet or crematory; use a cooler with ice packs.

Why a small fish still has a minimum price
Most families receive private cremation ashes back in about 5-10 days[5], and small pets are often among the quicker ones. For a fish in West, the price usually follows the provider's minimum for the smallest pets, as in the table below. Water cremation, where it's offered, falls in similar bands. If your fish is very small, ask whether a symbolic return costs the same as a private cremation.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Texas: Texas costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Texas allows for a pet fish
Ashes from a fish are mostly bone mineral, and scattering them is rarely regulated on your own land. Tipping them into a pond that still holds fish can cloud the water, so many keepers scatter around the edge instead. Public lakes, rivers and parks are a different matter: the body that manages them can set its own rules. Here's what applies in Texas.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in West.
The Texas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. West's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
From the first minute to the last goodbye
- Make sure. Watch the gills and fins for a full minute. A fish lying still on the bottom can be chilled, stunned or very weak rather than gone.
- Lift your fish out with a net as soon as you're sure, so decay doesn't foul the water for the others.
- Seal it in a bag or tub, press the air out and freeze it. Chill it in the fridge instead if you want a vet to find out why it died.
- Test the water the same day for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature, and watch the remaining fish closely.
- Decide by size. A koi or large goldfish suits private cremation; a small tank fish often suits a burial, a planter or communal cremation.
- Call a provider and ask what they'd return once they know how long and heavy it is, then have the total put in writing.
Remembering your fish in West
When choosing an urn, a common rule of thumb is about one cubic inch of space for every pound your pet weighed in good health. A ten-pound cat needs a small urn; a large rabbit or a hefty tortoise may need a little more. If you plan to divide the ashes or keep a portion in jewelry, a slightly smaller main urn is fine.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[1] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in West follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from West?
Usually yes. Hillsboro is about 15 miles away, Whitney is about 17 miles away and Waco is about 18 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Grand Prairie to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Grand Prairie (roughly 61 miles from West) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How does West's weather affect fish aftercare?
August is the hottest month in West, with average highs around 97°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
What should I do with the other fish after one dies?
Remove the dead fish quickly, then test the water for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature. Check the filter, pump and heater. If readings are off, do a partial water change and hold off feeding for a day. Watch the others closely for a week. If more fish look unwell, a vet who sees fish can examine a freshly chilled body.
How much does fish cremation cost in West?
Most fish fall in the smallest weight band. Nationally, CareCredit lists private cremation for pets up to 30 lb at about $100 to $175, and communal at $45 to $75. Collection, a decorative urn and glass keepsakes are extra. Ask any West provider for a written total, and ask what they'd return before paying for a private cremation.
