The Colony, Texas
Who to call first in The Colony when a fish dies
The Colony's long shoreline trail and lakeside parks such as Stewart Creek Park are part of everyday life for many residents and their animals. Lewisville Lake is federal property, so the Corps of Engineers sets the rules for its banks and water; check before scattering any ashes. Many families decide to keep ashes at home first, then choose a place once they're ready.
July is The Colony's hottest month, averaging about 96F, and January nights fall to about 34F. In the warm season, act quickly: settle your pet in the coolest room, lay the body on a bath towel spread over vinyl or tile, and pack frozen gel bags alongside. In winter, an attached garage with the door closed can keep the body cool while you arrange collection the next morning.
Families near The Colony sometimes lose several pond fish at once after a storm, a power cut to the pump or a hot, still night. It's upsetting to find, and the first job is the survivors: remove the dead fish, get air moving in the water and test it. Once that's done, you can freeze the fish you lost and decide calmly whether they'll be buried together, cremated communally or cremated individually.
About 46,196 people live in The Colony, which makes it the 79th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve The Colony are based about 6 miles away in Frisco, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Families in The Colony often end up using a provider from Lewisville (6 miles, a larger centre), Frisco (6 miles, a larger centre) and Little Elm (7 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Local attitudes to cremation
Cremation now covers some 55.7%[1] of deaths in Texas, and that steady rise has gone hand in hand with pets being treated as family. Fish are part of the shift. Koi typically live 30-40 years[5], according to the Japan Nishikigoi Promotion Association, so a pond fish can outlast a mortgage and watch children grow up. Choosing a proper cremation for a fish like that is no stranger than doing it for a dog.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Texas figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in The Colony tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
The Colony weather, ponds and timing
Heat waves in The Colony catch out even experienced koi keepers. A pump failure during a July afternoon, a thunderstorm that stirs up the pond or an algae bloom crashing overnight can all strip oxygen from the water in hours. If several fish die at once, test the water before you do anything else, then chill the freshest body in the fridge in case a vet wants to examine it.
In The Colony's long warm season, fish keep eating and growing for most of the year, which is good for them but means pond water needs close watching. If a fish dies without an obvious cause in the hotter months, take a water sample to a fish store or test it yourself the same day. Knowing whether oxygen, ammonia or temperature was to blame can save the others.

Fish cremation prices for The Colony families
Four things set the total for a fish in The Colony: private or communal cremation, whether you drop it off or need collection, what the ashes come back in and whether you want a certificate or keepsake. The fish itself rarely changes the price, because even a large koi sits in the lowest weight band. The ranges below are national; local quotes can sit above or below them.

Before you bury, scatter or rehome in Texas
Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for Texas, set out below, are all you need.
Texas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers The Colony.
The rules that apply across Texas (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Texas page. The Colony may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do when your fish dies in The Colony
- If your child's fish dies while they're at school, either leave the fish in place or put it somewhere cold, then be honest with them once they're home.
- Skip the secret replacement. Most children spot the difference, and finding out later hurts more than hearing the truth now.
- Let them see the fish if they want to, wrapped in a soft cloth, and answer questions in plain words.
- Offer two or three choices for the goodbye, such as a flowerpot on the windowsill, a spot in the garden or a small box to keep.
- Set a time for the goodbye, giving them a chance to write a card, find a stone or think of words.
- Leave the tank empty for a while before talking about a new fish, unless your child asks sooner.
Remembering your fish in The Colony
The Colony occupies a stretch of Lewisville Lake's eastern shoreline in southern Denton County, about six miles west of Frisco, with the Sam Rayburn Tollway running along its southern edge. Much of the town was laid out as a planned community in the 1970s, so many streets have compact brick homes with rear alley garages. Tell the provider whether to come to the front door or the alley, and mention any gated section.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from The Colony?
Usually yes. Lewisville is about 6 miles away, Frisco is about 6 miles away and Little Elm is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[1]. We show it on the The Colony page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in The Colony?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 96°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Will I have to travel to Frisco to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Frisco (roughly 6 miles from The Colony) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is it illegal to release a pet fish in Texas?
Releasing non-native fish into lakes, rivers and ponds is restricted in many US states, and some make it illegal to release goldfish at all. Rules vary by state, so check with your state wildlife agency. Whatever the law, releasing a fish you can't keep harms native wildlife. Pet stores, fish clubs and rehoming groups can often take unwanted fish.
How long can I keep a dead fish in the freezer?
Sealed in a bag with the air pressed out and wrapped in a towel, a fish keeps for weeks or even months. That gives you time to find a provider or wait for a burial day. Label the bag clearly. If you want a vet to find out why your fish died, chill it in the fridge instead and call them quickly, because freezing damages the tissue.
