Humble, Texas

Getting help with a fish loss around Humble

The San Jacinto River and Lake Houston frame the Humble area, and low ground here has flooded more than once, including during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. The muggy season runs from May to October. During those months, bring them into the air conditioning and arrange collection before the day ends. If power is out after a storm, call sooner. Winter nights are mild.

Pets in Humble often live in suburban homes with yards backing onto pine trees and drainage channels. Flood risk is one reason many owners choose cremation rather than a grave in the yard, since remains can be kept safely indoors or moved if needed. Keeping the container on an upper shelf adds a margin of safety during storm season. Flood insurance rarely covers keepsakes.

In a smaller place like Humble, fish aftercare usually goes through the local vet, who sends small animals to a crematory in a larger city such as Houston. Some vets have a weekly collection, so your fish may wait a few days in their freezer. That's fine: a fish frozen promptly keeps well. Ask the vet whether their crematory accepts fish and what, if anything, comes back for a fish of your size.

With roughly 16,484 residents, Humble is the 169th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Houston, roughly 17 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Humble run from there.

If you want to compare providers, look at Atascocita (5 miles, a larger centre), Kingwood (6 miles) and Spring (11 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

55.7%[1]

The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.

10 million[2]

About 10 million US households keep freshwater fish.

13%[3]

13% of UK households keep an indoor fish tank.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026 and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A fish at home in Humble

Cremation, custom and the family fish in Texas

Roughly 55.7%[1] of funerals in Texas end in cremation, so plenty of families mix both traditions, and couples sometimes disagree over a fish. One wants a grave by the pond; the other wants something to keep. A compromise works well: cremate the fish, keep a little of the ashes indoors and bury the rest beside a marginal plant near the water. Ashes carry no disease, so the pond stays safe, and you get both a keepsake and a place to visit.

We take the Texas rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Humble, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Season by season: fish losses in Humble

In the hottest months (May, June, July, August and September), a dead fish breaks down fast, in the water and out of it. Net it out within the hour if you can, because decay releases ammonia that can harm the fish still living in the pond or tank. Seal it in a bag, press the air out and freeze it. Never leave a fish in a hot car on the way to a vet or crematory; use a cooler with ice packs.

If you'd like to plant something where a fish is buried, Humble's heat changes the timing. A shrub or perennial put in during August, with highs around 95°F, needs watering every day just to survive. Many gardeners mark the spot now with a simple stone and add the plant beside it in the cooler months, when it will root properly. A memorial plant that thrives means more than one that wilts in its first week.

Fish cremation quotes in Humble: what's normal

Where a Humble provider offers water cremation, ask for both of its versions. By our estimate, private aquamation runs about two and a half times the price of communal aquamation at the same provider[5]. The process uses roughly the water of 1–3 pet baths[6], according to the Veterinary Sustainability Alliance, which appeals to many people saying goodbye to a water animal. What comes back is a soft white powder instead of grey ash, and the national price bands appear in the table below.

What Texas allows for a pet fish

Some fish diseases are taken seriously by governments. Koi herpesvirus, for example, is reportable in a number of countries because it spreads between ponds and fisheries. If a vet suspects a notifiable disease, follow their instructions on disposal, which may mean cremation rather than burial. For everyday losses from age or water problems, the normal rules for Texas, set out below, are all you need.

From the first minute to the last goodbye

  1. Make sure. Watch the gills and fins for a full minute. A fish lying still on the bottom can be chilled, stunned or very weak rather than gone.
  2. Lift your fish out with a net once you're certain; left in the tank, it will start to spoil the water for the rest.
  3. Seal it in a bag or tub, press the air out and freeze it. Chill it in the fridge instead if you want a vet to find out why it died.
  4. Test the water the same day for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature, and watch the remaining fish closely.
  5. Decide by size. A koi or large goldfish suits private cremation; a small tank fish often suits a burial, a planter or communal cremation.
  6. Call a provider and ask what they'd return for your fish's length and weight, and get the total in writing.

Ways to mark the spot

Humble is an older town in northeast Harris County, about 17 miles from downtown Houston, near Bush Intercontinental Airport and Lake Houston. It grew around an early oil field, and its small historic center is now ringed by large subdivisions and shopping areas. Providers serving north Houston generally cover Humble; give clear directions, especially inside the larger master-planned communities. Weekend calls may cost more.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Humble?

The closest communities we cover are Atascocita (about 5 miles), Kingwood (about 6 miles) and Spring (about 11 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Humble too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Where are the providers that serve Humble actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Houston, about 17 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Humble and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

How does Humble's weather affect fish aftercare?

August is the hottest month in Humble, with average highs around 95°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.

Why does the Humble page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[1] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Is it illegal to release a pet fish in Texas?

Releasing non-native fish into lakes, rivers and ponds is restricted in many US states, and some make it illegal to release goldfish at all. Rules vary by state, so check with your state wildlife agency. Whatever the law, releasing a fish you can't keep harms native wildlife. Pet stores, fish clubs and rehoming groups can often take unwanted fish.

Can my vet in Humble arrange a fish's cremation?

Often yes. Many small-town vets send small animals to a regional crematory and can include a fish with their regular collection. Ask whether their crematory accepts fish, whether you'll get ashes back for your fish's size and what the total cost will be.
