Bixby, Oklahoma
Koi, goldfish and tank fish: the Bixby picture
Bixby's summer afternoons run into the mid-90s with river-valley humidity, so move your pet at once into the chilliest room, on tile if possible. Winter nights around 28°F are gentle, but freezing drizzle occasionally glazes the Memorial Drive bridge and back roads. Spring thunderstorms and tornado sirens can also push back a collection by several hours or more. Close the blinds on the west side.
Bixby lies along the Arkansas River about 16 miles south of downtown Tulsa, a fast-growing Tulsa County suburb that still has fertile river-bottom farmland at its edges, including sod and vegetable fields. Newer subdivisions with brick homes and fenced yards fill much of the city, while older houses cluster near Main Street. Tulsa-area providers reach Bixby readily, and scheduling a pickup at your house is seldom difficult.
One advantage of a community the size of Bixby is that people talk. Your vet, the feed store or the person who sold you your pond fish will usually know whether anyone locally takes fish for cremation and how they treat them. Ask directly what they'd do with their own fish. A straight answer from someone who knows the area is worth more than a glossy website.
Bixby is home to about 32,766 people, the 12th-largest of the 26 Oklahoma communities we cover. Tulsa, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Bixby run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Jenks (6 miles), Broken Arrow (9 miles, a larger centre) and Sapulpa (14 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Bixby routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Cremation, custom and the family fish in Oklahoma
Cremation accounts for about 58.6%[1] of deaths in Oklahoma, so it's familiar but not the only tradition. That mix shows up in how local families say goodbye to fish. Some cremate a koi and keep the ashes by the pond; others bury a goldfish under a new plant and never think of cremation at all. Neither is more proper. Choose the goodbye that you'll feel good about in a year's time.
We take the Oklahoma rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Bixby, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Heat, ice and your pond in Bixby
In Bixby, the pond you might lose a fish from in July is the same one that ices over in January, February and December, and the right aftercare shifts with the season. A summer loss calls for speed: out of the water and into the freezer before the heat does its work. A winter loss calls for patience, because the fish can stay frozen until the ground opens up. Plan the goodbye around the season you're in, not around a deadline.
Pond keepers in Bixby tend to lose fish at the turn of the seasons: in the first hot spell, when warm water can't hold enough oxygen, and in early spring, as fish wake up under melting ice into water full of winter waste. If you lose fish at either time, test the water the same day and do a partial water change if ammonia or nitrite is up.

What fish cremation costs in Bixby
Many Bixby families arrange a fish's cremation through their vet, which is convenient but not always the cheapest route. In a US survey, 48.8%[5] of pet owners named their veterinary team as their main source of advice on pet death. You can also call a crematory directly and compare. For a fish, the difference between two quotes is often a collection fee you don't need.

Burial, scattering and release rules in Oklahoma
Pet crematories are lightly regulated in many places. Often there's no licence written for them at all, and any inspection covers the equipment rather than how pets are handled. That puts the questions in your hands: ask in writing how a small body is labeled from drop-off to return and whether the cremation is truly individual. Rules on burial and scattering in Oklahoma follow.
The official Oklahoma local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Bixby.
The rules that apply across Oklahoma (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Oklahoma page. Bixby may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A checklist for Bixby fish keepers
- Net your fish out gently and lay it on a soft cloth, giving yourself a moment.
- Freeze it the same day, sealed and wrapped. A frozen fish keeps for weeks, so the clock stops here.
- Work out its size: measure from nose to the fork of the tail and note the rough weight. Providers will ask.
- Tell the family, including children, in simple honest words. Avoid a quiet swap for a lookalike.
- Compare two options, such as private cremation with the ashes in a small urn against burying your fish beneath something newly planted.
- Book your choice and ask how your fish will be identified from drop-off to return.
Small memorials for a small life in Bixby
Many Bixby households are young families with several animals, and those left behind may pace or look for their companion. Letting them investigate the body before collection sometimes helps. When you call providers, ask if your pet will be cremated by itself, what's included in the quoted price and whether there's an extra charge for evenings or weekends. Ask about paw prints too.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Bixby?
January, February and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 94°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Will I have to travel to Tulsa to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Tulsa (roughly 16 miles from Bixby) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Bixby page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 58.6%[1] of Oklahoma residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bixby?
Usually yes. Jenks is about 6 miles away, Broken Arrow is about 9 miles away and Sapulpa is about 14 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I bury a fish on a relative's land near Bixby?
Usually yes, with the owner's permission. Stay clear of wells, streams, field drains and ponds that livestock drink from, above all if an infection killed the fish. A cotton cloth or newspaper makes a better wrapping than plastic. A marker or a plant makes the spot easy to find again, which matters if the land might one day be sold.
What should I do with the other fish after one dies?
Remove the dead fish quickly, then test the water for ammonia, nitrite, pH and temperature. Check the filter, pump and heater. If readings are off, do a partial water change and hold off feeding for a day. Watch the others closely for a week. If more fish look unwell, a vet who sees fish can examine a freshly chilled body.
